Another week, another attempt at writing fan fic. This was inspired by the Apocalypse thread, this is a version of how I think the last battle of the Buffyverse will go down. This first chapter I'm posting now is a long 'putting the pieces together part, but after that, it will be all mayhem.. Hope you guyys enjoy it:
PART 1: The Last Goodbye
1. The Scooby core
She is the first one to walk up the on ramp to the freeway leading right into L.A, only about ten miles until they are officially in the city and fighting the battle that their lives having been leading up to. A path that Buffy Summers has been on several times, but this time it really does feel like the end of it all, and she wishes for it to finally be over with. If there wasn’t one factor involved here, she would’ve sat this one out like she has been for the last couple of years. But her ex lover has her sister, her only real true love and she protected her from death once, she will do it again. And also, she has this gut feeling that although there are now hundreds of active slayers, that she needs to be the one to lead this, that her whole life has been leading up to this battle. She holds her scythe tightly as the two figures who have been following her thoughout her journey catch up to her. She speaks to them without looking behind her. “They’ll be waiting for us, you know that right? The minute we step foot into the city, they will be all over us.”
“Yes, yes,” Rupert Giles begins to say as he finally catches up to Buffy and stands to her right. “You have to figure that The First and Angelus has been expecting us for a couple of days now. But I have Faith that a good lot of us will at least make it to The Wolfram and Hart offices.”
“So the odds are against us?” Xander Harris says walking up to stand right next to Buffy on the left, swinging his battle axe around like it was just a toy. “That’s always a case with Armageddon and we always stop them. Sure we are facing a city full of demons led by two of our greatest enemies, but once we finish up drinks are on me.”
Buffy looks at Xander remorsefully. “I’m going to be honest, I don’t think that all of us will be around after this one.”
“Buffy don’t think like....” Giles tries to stop his charge from thinking negative.
“It’s okay Giles, I know both of you feel it too.”
“What?” Xander asks. “That bad feeling in my gut that’s telling us this is the end of it ALL. I mean the real end.”
Buffy looks up at the glowing white light in the sky. “Yeah, that feeling.”
Giles gives Buffy a very sad look. “Should we do it now?”
“Yeah,” Buffy says. “Let’s get it over with. This is going to be the hardest part of the battle.”
Giles turns behind him to see an army of about three hundred slayers, with an almost matched number of watchers, five hundred intiative soldiers and several hundred civillians and demons. Rupert Giles yells at the top of his lungs. “WE STOP HERE FOR AN HOUR TO SAY OUR GOODBYES.” Everyone falls out of the battle line they have formed and begin to chat it up with the people closest to them. Giles looks back at Buffy then up at the white light that descending down to them. Giles looks back at his two students as they look back at him with saddened but happy faces. “Buffy....”
“Let me say this part, you two need to here this.” She says looking at Giles and Xander.
“Shouldn’t we wait for Willow to descend from her godly plain?” Xander asks.
“No, this speech is intended for you two, although Willow is part of the core, she doesn’t need to here this.”
“Buffy, what is it?” Giles asks.
She gives both of her men very loving eyes, then almost goes into tears. “I’ve had many men in my lives, well, not that many, but you know what I mean. Riley, Angel, Spike, they have all been known as my champions before, but that’s I lie. None of them were my champions, at least not as much as you two have been. They all had power that made them able to be my champions, but none of them had the heart and soul that you two have given over the years. Although, you were just mortal men, the two of you have been there for me during every armageddon, every break up, for most of my life as a slayer. That makes you my true champions. Angel and Spike can’t hold a candle to you guys.”
She looks Giles straight in the eyes and he is taken by what she is saying and what she is about to say, she puts her hand on his shoulder. “ When things started out, you were hired to be my watcher, to watch me through my slayer training. You have become so much more, Rupert, my dad pretty much abandoned me once he and my dad divorced, but you were always there when he wasn’t, you are my real father. If I have learned anything over my life that is that family isn’t blood, it’s that person who is always there looking out for you best interests and taking you under his wing. And when you were fired by the Watcher’s council, you could’ve just left for England, but you stayed. That’s what made you a great example of a parent to me, you have always gone where you heart and loyalties would lead you. And that loyalty was always for the good, it was always to watch over me as a father. You have gone above and beyond the call of your original duty.” She gives the englishman a hug as he says nothing. As she pulls away, he takes his glasses off and instead uses his hankerchiff to wipe his eyes.
She then makes her way to Xander who reaches out to her imediately. They hold their hands up to eachother both with tears in their this time around, both knowing what is to come. “What do I have to say to you? What can I say Xander? You were never a witch, never a watcher, nor a demon or vampire, but you have done more for me than anyone combined. You brought me back to life, your love stopped Willow from destroying the world, you have gone into losing battle after losing battle with me and have proved my most valueable warrior. When most humans would hesistate going into this mission, you have shown a lifetimes worth of courage. And when there were times when I was dark and alone and I thought I couldn’t go on, I would think ‘What would Xander do’? Xander your my hero, I look up to you.” She goes to hug him, but pulls back and then gives him a huge kiss on the lips. She pulls away as he smiles, this has been what he always wanted, it was a nice kiss, full of love.
She looks at both of them as the white light gets closer towards them so Buffy makes the rest of the speech quick. “I don’t know what’s going to happen, I don’t know who’s going to die. But I want you both to know that you really are the only men in my life, you were my only constant in an ever changing life. And I know that you will fight as hard in this battle as you had before and I hope to god that you two get out of this with your lives, because the world would lose the two greatest heros. I really do love you guys.” She looks at them as they give her two amazing smiles.
“Well, we know this is the end now, don’t we?” Xander says. “That speech was last episode of MASH worthy. I love you Buffster.”
“Buffy, I am so moved.” Giles says.
“Well, no time for that, here comes our ace.” Buffy says as the white light turns into a figure. The three stare in awe as a white haired woman finally touches the ground of the freeway after her descension from the heavens above. Buffy smiles at her old friend, she remembers this goddess when she was a nerdy red headed geek in high school. Willow smiles back at her friends as she stops glowing, but the white hair remains intact. Buffy walks up to give Willow a gentle hug. “Glad you came to join in on the fight, we are really going to need you.”
Willow pulls back and now looks at all three of her old friends. “You think I would actually miss this one last battle. Although I’m getting hell from the other God’s in the heavens for ‘meddling’ with the mortal coil. But the way I see it, you guys are family, their just my co-workers.”
“Willow,” Xander says opening his arms for a big hug as she lunges to him. “Long time, no see, you don’t call or write to your old child hood friend. I know your busy, but you should put some time in for the Xand man.”
Xander and Willow embrace for a good minute, then look at each other lovingly. “Xander, I missed you so much. There’s not much humor up in the heaven dimension, they defintely need a Xander god of the funny. But I’ve heard you’ve been making a name for yourself here.”
“Yeah,” Xander looks at his sister like friend. “I’ve become a full fledged watcher, actually. Got seven years under my belt now, trained two of the councils best.”
Giles rubs his glasses as he adds onto Xander’s statement. “Quite extrodinary really, he’s one of our two highest ranked watcher’s nowadays.”
Willow lights up as Giles speaks, she runs up to the groups proverbial father figure and embraces him as well. “ And Giles, your head of the Watcher’s council now.”
“Assuming there will be a watcher’s council in a few hours, yes.” Giles explains.
“Don’t be so negative Giles, we are going to win this one, like we have won several times before.”
Xander interuppts the conversaton. “Coming from someone who can’t die.” He says this with a smile.
“Oh, Gods can die, all I did was ascend to a higher plain of existance, there is still alot of mortality left in me. I’m just incredibly hard to kill.” Willow smiles beneath her white locks. “One thing I have learned is that no being is beyond death.”
“Except for the immortal comedy of Don Knotts.” Xander adds.
“Willow,” Buffy begins looking at her old friend. “I hate to ask this, but having you been paying any attention to the happenings in L.A?”
“You want to know about Dawn don’t you?” The now all knowing Willow looks at Buffy as she knods. “She’s alright, so is Faith and that other boy who needs to be sacrificed. In fact, they can’t do the ritual until they have the blood of a ensouled slayer.”
“Yeah,” Buffy begins. “which is what we are going to be bringing him once we get there. We are probably playing right into his trap.”
“Buffy,” Willow begins. “They left us with no other choice, Angelus has Dawn.”
“So I have to kill Angel once more. This time, I know he won’t be coming back.”
“Buffy, I know what Angel means to you.” Giles says.
“But he’s not as important to me as Dawn. It’s either Angel or Dawn, and I’m not going to lose my sister. I stopped her from dieing once, I will do it again.”
“So, why aren’t we moving out? You know rush in and save, why did you guys all the sudden stop.” Willow asks.
“Because we need this moment.” Giles answers.
“Why? R&R?” The ever eager Willow insists.
“We need to say goodbye to everyone.” Buffy answers.
“Goodbye, why goodbye? I know I’ve been up in the mystical plain for a while, but we’ve faced apocalypses before.” Willow who has gone past the mortal feelings, has lost the bad feeling in her gut long ago.
“Willow, this is it. This is our final stand, don’t you feel it?” A very stressed Buffy asks the Goddess.
“I’m sorry Buffy, but I believe that you can do this. There will be no need for goodbyes, we can win this.”
“Yeah,” Buffy looks over at her army and begins to walk over to her army. “But at what price?” Giles and Xander give Willow the same look that Buffy has been giving her, Willow still doesn’t get what the big deal is about. The two men follow Buffy onto the rest of the comrades to talk stragedy and say goodbye to others.
2. Sunnydale High Reunion
Oz squeezes his way past the intiative troops and slayers, moving towards the white light that he just saw, amazed at it. He knows exactly what the spectactle in the sky was, it’s was his girl. He hasn’t seen her since he left Sunnydale and is excited but not shocked at what she has become. He remembers the first spell she ever cast, he was right there holding her hand, even then he could feel the power flowing through her, it scared him. Everyday since he left he has been thinking about her, couldn’t meet any thing better and more powerful than her. At one point, when he realized that he had full control of his inner wolf, he wanted to go back and see her, but he knew that she had found the love of another. When Buffy called him asking him to help in probably the last battle ever, he was hoping he would get to see his girlfriend one last time. And there she is, descending from the heavens like the angel he always knew she was. He tries to make his way past all the bigger armed troops, so he could see her this one last time, but is stopped by another familliar face.
“Oz, is that you?” The smiling face of Cordelia Chase asks stopping him from move closer to his ex. But Oz, likes Cordy, there has always been this bond between the two of them when they were High School. He is actually just as shocked to see her as she is to see him, he actually thought she was one of the people that Angel turned. But he admits that she looks much more mature than the last time the two ran into each other. He gives her a half smile as they embrace, something the two of them weren’t used to doing in the old days, but there was always this unspoken bond between the two of them. “ It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Yeah, ten years in my count. Never thought I would be back on the demon battle field.”
“Yeah, I here you. I retired from the game the minute I turned evil then put into a coma.” He gives her an unsure look. “That’s a long story, let’s just say that I went through alot of changes over the years. Some for the good, some for the bad. What about you? Still a were wolf?”
“In a way.” Oz answers.
“So, what are you doing here if you retired from battling vamps and you seem to have control over your wolfism due to the fact that tonight is a full moon and look at you.”
“To be honest, I don’t know, maybe to find something that I lost years ago.” He’s been pondering that question since he told Buffy that he would join her army.
“Wait,” Cordelia sparks, Oz realizes that she is a whole lot smarter than she used to be. “ I know why you came here, I have a sense for these things.”
“Then you’d be right.”
“After all these years, your still in love with Willow? That is very romantic and kind of sad, you know she’s gay and from the looks of things, a goddess.”
“Yeah, I noticed that.” Oz likes to keep his words short and doesn’t really want to go into the whole ‘lesbian’ issue with Cordy. He realizes something as he looks at her, that she is scared to death, that she has in fact changed, she is putting on that old High School act to cover up the fact that she knows what he knows. He knows now that she has the same gut feeling, that by daylight, that one or both of them will probbly be dead. He figures that there is more to her now, that she is an entirely different person. The fact that she is here is testament to that. “So, Cordy, what exactly are you doing here?”
“Seems a little weird for me to be involved in such a grand battle when I’m not getting paid doesn’t it?” She finally shows her true self now, in that change of face, he sees the strong confident woman she has become. “ I’m here for several reasons Oz, like I said, I’ve been through changes over the years, major changes. The one reason I’m here is because wether I like or not, deep down inside, I’m a champion. A few months after the last time we saw each other, I was given visions, I have never been the same since. My true calling isn’t acting or money or cars, it’s to help protect this stupid stupid earth.” Oz is taken aback by this speech, but realizes something else as she says this little speech.
“Your doing this for love too aren’t you?”
“Yeah, a love of sorts, yes.” She is almost ashamed to admit this. “ Two men that I love are in that city, one of them is Angel.”
“Angel???” He is actually shocked to hear that.
“Yes, Angel and his son.” He gives her a reaction that she has never seen from him before. “ Not as weird as you think. Alright, yeah it is, if I told you that I actually had sex with Angel’s son, but I was evil.”
“Angel has a son?” It takes him a while to proccess all of this.
“Yeah, but only me and Angel remember him. It’s a very long story, but yes, I love both of them, not to mention Wesley and Gunn and Fred who are now vampified. I sort of feel like all of this is my fault. I feel that if the last battle is against Angelus in L.A with Wolfram and Hart, that I need to be there, wether I want to or not.”
Oz can’t believe the compassionate person she has become, he is truly touched by her now. But his thoughts are interrupted when the several soldiers and slayers fall back as four faces he hasn’t seen in a long time show up. The four faces light up when they see the two former Sunnydale highers, Oz and Cordy run up to embrace the Scooby core. Cordy and Willow give each other a big hug, then Cordy moves on to shake hands with Buffy. Oz and Xander give each other five like old frat buddies, then Oz goes over to shake hands with Giles.
Buffy looks at the two of them, almost surprised. “Wow, you two actually showed up, I’m sorry, but High School was so long ago. I’d think you guys forgot all about us.”
“We did until you called.” Cordy answers.
“Good old Cordelia, always the enthusiastic one.” Xander adds.
Cordy walks up to him and gives him a huge hug, he is sort of surprised by this she in turn looks surprised by his eyepatch. “I missed you Xander. I really did, forget who I used to be and what we did to each other in the past. It’s just good to see you again.”
“Who are you and what did you do to Cordelia?” Xander is also amazed by her transformation.
“People do change Xander, even cold hearted bitches.” The two spark up a conversation and walk off for a few minutes. Oz makes his way to Willow, both are amazed to see each other again, but neither really know what to say.
“Hey.” Oz says lifting his head up to her.
“Hey,” She also has no clue what to say to her ex boyfriend. For the first time in a very long time, she can’t think of anything to say. They have no clue what will make things better between the two of them, he’s just happy to see her at least once more.
He looks her over for a few seconds and can only think of one thing to say. “You have the sweetest smile.” She giggles a little bit at this, unsure what her orientation is anymore. He then looks at her hair and thinks of another funny. “Not exactly blue hair but it will do.”
“Yeah, things have changed alot since the last time we saw each other. I’m sort of a higher being now, kinda cool, ain’t it?” She pauses for a couple of minutes she can feel that he still loves and has no clue if she should bring this up.
“This is kind of awkward isn’t it?” He asks as they begin to walk off having their own conversation, trying to get know each other before they lose each other once more, for good.
