[This thread is aimed at French speaking Buffy viewers, but since the post isn't actually in French I figured I should probably post it here]

Hi! I'm Canadian, and in Canada many of our products come with both English and French labels (what with the whole bilingual thing).

Anyway, I bought the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer video game for the Xbox game a while back and was flipping through the French version of the instruction manual (I can read and speak some French, but being the nice guy I am, I decided not type this message in French because I know I'd butcher the language) and I noticed something odd. 'Xander' was listed as 'Alex'. Now, Xander is indeed short for Alexander, but I don't think he's ever been called Alex in the show... at least not in the English speaking version.

Okay, so here's the question... has anyone here watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer dubbed into French, and if so, do they call Xander, 'Alex'? Just curious as to whether they've changed his name in French version of BtVS or whether the instruction manual made a mistake.

Yep Happy, in the french version of BtVS, they indeed say Alex instead of Xander. I don't think it was a good idea to do that but they did it anyway. That's it. Lol, if you got other questions, I'll be plzed to answer !!! :D

Thanks.

I've seen so many film titles translated into stuff that isn't even close, that when I see little things like that it makes me wonder. Any ideas why they didn't use Xander? I mean, Alex is okay but it's just kind of common and 'blah'. Xander just sounds so much more interesting.

No idea why. Actually I think it might be a mistake. They might have think that in USA they said Xander instead of Alex & since here we say Alex they wanted to translate it so that everyone would understand. Or maybe because it doesn't sound very great in french, Xander, sounds not like in english.

& yep, there are a lot of mistranslation, willingly or not they did mistakes. Like look the the caritas part in the thread about languages, i wrote sommink about a mistranslation with french/italian.
