angel good or evil??????

well i'm new in the buffy world!... i stared to watching it, so please, bare with me!... anyway, i'm now watching syndicated episodes of buffy, and i'm watching almost the end of season 2 (i just watched the episode of that ugly guy that only kids could see, and when buffy got a fever coud see him too) , i know a little about angel and buffy love story, but now i see that angel is evil, and is here where i'm confused, i thought angel had a soul or something like that... can someone please explain that to me!!!!

Angel was cursed and given his sole back by jipsees(have no idea how to spell that) however the spell stated that if he had a moment of happiness his soul would be taken away and when he had sex with Buffy that made him happy and so he lost his soul.
