They're seems to be people on this board from all over the world...so there's bound to be some Irish people here....right?!?
Well if they are come in and show of your native language...then again you might not even be from Ireland but you've got a few words...anything will do! :bounce:

Ok, the following will sound pretty sophomoric but:

I honestly didn't think there was an Irish language. I always suspected they just spoke English, due their neighbors. Wow, I'm a fricken' idiot!

Jill_Valentine

:D

It's a fair assumption. Irish died out as the popular language under British rule, as families adopted the language of government, English. So, English is our first language. However, the modern government puts quite a bit of effort into sustaining the language. We learn Irish from primary school, and all official documents and road signs etc. have Irish translations, and you have to be able to speak Irish for most government jobs (Police force, etc) There's also some areas of the countries reserved for Irish speaking communities, and an Irish language TV station. But my Irish is terrible. I mainly use it to insult tourists without their knowledge. :D

I might be wrong, but I think David Boreanaz speaks Irish at some stage in Angel...

*Other nerdy fact: The name "Pocahontas" comes from Irish. Puca + Iontas = Wonderful Spirit. The word Smithereens is ours too.

I believe Angel does speak Irish as well and he is of Irish decent, but as a true Irish woman, you must hate his accent.

Jill_Valentine
09-08-2004, 09:01 PM
:D His accent is awful, no doubt about it. But, he's trying his best, bless his little cotton socks, and at least it's not as bad as the Charlies Angels' 2 guys.

"Buffí, an Marfóir de Súmaire" or translated literally, "Buffy, the killer of leeches".... :D

Dia Duit. That's about all I can remember now and I took Irish for 2 years, I need to dig out my dictionary.. lol.

I can pronounce the words, but I don't remember what they mean.

"Slainte" - does that mean "cheers"?

I remember being very confused by the Gaelic toilet signs in Irish pubs - the word for women looked a bit like men as I recall (something like "mna"?). It didn't do to be desperate to go when you had to wait to see which toilet the locals went into :)

I loved Ireland - a great craic was had on my visits there (there you go, that looks like another one - "craic":))

Jill_Valentine
09-09-2004, 09:34 AM
Hang on, Beer Nut, did you learn Irish outside of Ireland? Crikey!

Slainte does mean cheers. Technically, it means "Health" or "Safety", two things I know I don't associate with drinking... :D

And just to demonstrate how insanely confusing the language is - The plural is Mna. The singular is Bean. Bean. Mna. Argh!

I think there's a campaign to get Irish recognised as an official European language... dunno how well that's going to go...

Hang on, Beer Nut, did you learn Irish outside of Ireland? Crikey!

I took it in university for a couple of years while I was deciding whether to do a masters in Celtic archaeology. My Welsh is actually better than my Irish though.

And to Beer Nut! Well Irish is very hard to learn (it has so many bloody rules). But i enjoy speaking it. I like languages.
I notice that 'Buffy Summers' has Slainte just below her Username. Although i'm guessing that's all she knows! (Don't take that the wrong way)

OK I'm Mr. ChosenOne and 2day's lesson is;
Hello = Dia Duit (Pronounced Gee-a-Ditch)
Slán = Bye (Prounced Sl-an)
Is mise... = I am... (Prounced Is-miss-ha...)
Tá Chonaí orm í... =I live in... (Prounced= Taa-Ho-nee-or-um-uch)

that concludes the lesson for today...

There's also the dialects, which are great fun, nice and confusing. ChosenOne is from Donegal, so quite a few of his pronunciations would be different to mine... Are you from a Gaeltacht area?

No just outside it. Although when i listen to people from the south i sorta drives me up the walls. As i hate things like Bhíos and seeing as our Irish is different all our texts books are in the southern irish so we have to know them both. PS I'm from Letterkenny. Ms. Southside :)

BrimstoneGurl
09-12-2004, 01:34 PM
Yes....everyone is Irish. Every actor,politician......drunk is appraently irish!I mean why do they do it?? And as for the tourist...yeah brings the money in....which goes to the immigrants&goverment. The only thing the people get is litter and confusement! Anyway I'm not going to rant about the awful state of our goverment! :)
I have yet to meet a foreign actor(well I wish I could meet :hihi: ) that can do the accent right.I know they're some that can,but 98% are terrible!

I don't know.....I doubt it.All I know is the name JamesbOnd came from an author of a bird book, that fleming was reading.I can't picture Fleming making a secret agent that worked for the Birtish goverment being irish.....but then again..you never know! :)

it's like the irish football team need english players to survive... the english government need the irsih to survive. (I scratch your back you scratch mine...)

BrimstoneGurl
09-17-2004, 02:31 PM
I'm not sure about them needing the irish to survived, they seem to have done wel enough by themselves. They provide their own needs,so no they don't need the irish.
But back on topic......who do you guys think actually nailed the accent, got it right! :)

Cate Blanchet&Eric Homes(some actor that acts once every-full moon) :hihi:
And as for Fleming&if the original character was to be irish.....it was going to be an American that transfered over to the British secret service, but that was Flemings rough plot!Thank god he re-wrote it and had it as an enlish(irish, welsh, austriallan :) )
or else we wouldn't have the lovely Pierce Brosnan!

Okay everyone back to business :)

It was actually my Irish friend (who sadly left to go home to Ireland last night) who I think said the original character was Irish so Pierce Brosnan is the closest to the original intent and that Sean Connery has no business playing Bond lol.

Oona's Grace
09-22-2004, 01:31 PM
Sean Connery's accent is so strong,he can't do any other one.He won an oscar for playing an Irish cop in the Untoucables, even though he still had the same Connery scott accent.
Tehn again Pierce isn't the most 'irish' of actors......he doesn't even know how to say 'hello,my name is Ppierce Brosnan' ion irish! :)

Nope. It's about an hour away from me, since as of friday, I'm no longer a resident of Dublin, and I'm back to the midlands. And in fairness, my grip on outside geography is shaky at best. I'm still getting to grips with the whole Washington/ Washington thing...

I'm sorry but they are not the same. Each country has its own level of independence through the education system, parliament, courts and laws. I don't mean to sound harsh, especially since my mothers side of the family is Irish, but its a pet peeve of mine. I don't even consider myself to be British, when asked and even on forms I put down Scottish.

They filmed part of Bravehart in Ireland because some of the scenery is similar that is it, and even then they are still different, but the general look is the same. The reason they filmed part in Ireland part Scotland was because the Scottish tourist industry was asking for too much money, which personally I think is insane and I don't agree with the fees that they asked for but thats another matter.

I'm sorry i didn't mean to cause offence. But i just ment that Ireland and Scotland are both (visually and scenicly) almost the same. Even the most die hard patriotic Irish or Scottish person would find it hard to prove othewise (Apart from the Higland Cattle...lol)
But I also hate when someone calls me British or English. I'm from Ireland and over 80 years ago we fought a war and won it because we didnt want to be ruled by England and today I stand by that. I think that a country's independance is good. And even though i'm not from Scotland (yet my family is orginally...going back 3 generations) I would like Scotland to have independance from England...
