This may have simply been a rumor but was there a quote of some kind that stated that Gunn definetly died at the end of Not Fade Away?

Illyria told him he was fading and he wouldn't last more than ten minutes. It was all kind of vague, but who knows what would have happened had we seen more of the alleyway scene...

We'll find out in Angel:The Curse, out this June from IDW. Check your local comic store in June for it!

This is just heresay, because I don't want to dig for the links (although I can if you really want me to), but I believe I've heard Joss say on 2 separate occasions Gunn dies in the Alley. The second time though (I believe it was at John Kerry's fundraiser), he sounded like he might have been joking. Then again it was that kind of interview.
And Watcher Wes, Aha, you're the guy I've been wanting to talk to.
What exactly is the score on these IDW comics as canon thing? Jeff Mariotte came out talking like he had Joss's active participation, now it sounds like he's insinuating he just has to run story ideas through Fox. Do you have any kind of inside scoop?
Come to think of it, can you straighten me out on the Long Night's Journey thing too? Brett Matthews wrote it, right? But somehow he wangled a co-writing credit from Joss to put on the cover. What's the story there? I hear it sucks. Is that correct? This makes me suspicious. I have a hard time believing Joss could be actively involved with something that openly sucked.
Also...is there some part of Long Night's Journey that says the gypsy curse wasn't meant for Angel? I think I read that somewhere, but when I Google for it now, all links to such information seem to have disappeared.

Yes, Joss said for sure that Gunn died in the Alley. However the only thing that counts as canon is what happens on tv and since he was still alive in NFA I don't think people can say that he died. Like in an official handbook they wouldn't be allowed to say that.

I agree. Joss may have said Gunn dies, but you just never know what kind of curve ball he's going to throw you. Maybe he was joking, or for all we know maybe Gunn could come back as a vampire. Gunn was surrounded by vampires the last time we saw him in good shape. Or Joss being Joss, he probably has something completely unexpected in mind.
As far as the IDW comics go, I've made up my mind about them. I don't think they will be canon. I know others have differing opinions on that, but that's mine.

The way I see it, when we last saw him he was alive, so technically until we see it in one form or another then he still is.

There is a quote by Joss (in SFX I think) about Gunn. He said, about what happened after NFA:
Gunn dies, so does Illyria and Spike, Angel's arm is cut off and Xander loses another eye, which is funny because he wasn't even there.
I'd take that with a pinch of joking salt.

Reportedly Joss also said this at a convention in San Deigo -
"I don't consider the finale to be quite as open as some people have said," Joss confessed. "Let's see, Gunn definitely dies, and many things are possible. I don't intend to continue the series, I think that the series is over but like I said we're talking about TV movies, we're talking about different venues. I would like to see what happens to those characters in some format we just haven't had a go on what that happens to be yet. But trying to bring back the series I think that it's sort of beyond that now."

Later there was another reported remark from the Kerry fundraiser -
He was asked again about the Ats cliffhanger and he repeated that the message was that you have to keep fighting…
But he went ahead and said (I think he was being flippant):
Gunn dies (groans in the background…I think J August Richards was there)

Here we go, found the quote from SFX:
"Gunn is dead. Illyria keeps fighting. Angel loses an arm. Spike gets Shanshu. And Xander loses another eye, which is funny, because he isn’t even there".
It was a joke btw.

It's kind of interesting though. The first time Joss makes the comment he sounds serious. The next time he sounds possibly flippant. The third time he's obviously joking.
I wonder what would explain that progression. :confused1

I wish he would tell us what happens. He still has ideas and so do the other writers. They should write a novel. The show had 5 million viewers. Even if 1/5 bought it it would be a best seller.

All I remember was someone saying that if not for the show getting axed, Gunn would have died instead of Wesley but they changed it because Joss always wanted Wes to die in the finale.
As for whether or not Gunn survived, no clue. I prefer to think they all lived :) And that they brought back my Wesley....hehe.

I think that one of the great things about the ending is that you don't know quite what happens, and that allows us fans to have long discussions where no one can have the right answere.
But my guess on Gunn is that he died, he was so badly wounded, and I also think that the way the others talked to him in the last scene indicated that they also believed he was going to die soon. Spike says: "You're supposed to wear the red stuff on the inside, Charlie boy." and Illyria: "You're fading. You'll last 10 minutes at best."..

Of course he died. A fatal wound is a fatal wound. no changing that. but he would have died a hero. And, hey, this is Angel. noone stays dead forever!

I am still in denial. It has been like a year and my family continues to tell me that Angel, Spike, Gunn and Illyria all died. But I dont believe it this is a world that so many of us have had for many years. And I for one will not except that it is just gone like that! ::skull::

I think that if Joss wants any of the heroes to survive he's going to have to pull some kind of Deus Ex Machina anyway; while he's at it, he might as well save Gunn, cause it's not like it will matter too much anymore then.
