View Full Version : Working Buffyisms Into Daily Conversation

I'm sure all of us have used "Bored, now." or "Going, now." at some point in our regular lives, but how many of you use other Buffyisms or quotes from the show? I'm finding that since I started getting back into Buffy a few weeks ago I'm doing this almost every day. Here are some of the ones I use:

Easy one - "Bored, now." can also be "tired, now" or "hungry, now" basically whatever you want.

Another easy one is adding -age to the end of things. For example, I've been at work and fixed a sewing machine then tested it and shown the nice sewing to the operator and said, "That's some nice sew-age." (Just realised what this spells! But you get the idea). On the golf course "Great drive!" has become "Quality driveage!" and "Nice putt!" "Nice puttage!" Is that changing any verb to a noun by addition of -age?

One I've used after someone else had fixed a machine, and another guy and I didn't agree with the way he'd done it was, just as he was about to start it up, I said "Now let's watch the tears and recriminations."

If someone is saying they'll do something drastic in response to "negetive stimuli" I now say, mock enthusiastically, "Good luck with that. Hope it works out for you."

When someone has given me something to think about I use "Aw, now I'm gonna be stuck with serious thoughts all day."

Another nice one is when someone says they are xxxxx (an adjective for how they feel), you say, "I'll see your xxxxx and raise you a yyyyy." For example, someone at work says they're tired I'll say, "I'll see your tiredness and raise you a lower back pain." This is actually half the actual quote and works for me because I do often get a lower back pain at work. But you could use it for any number of situations.

We don't often see the cuter girls from marketing or admin down on the factory floor, but when we do I now say "Mattressable, n'est pas?" and have since gone on to add n'est pas? to all kind of questions I might ask.

A couple of weeks ago all us mechanics were in the workshop in fits of laughter as one guy was making fun of another's possible sexual proclivities and acting out a doctor giving this guy a prostate examination. The words "...I can't go any further, Mr Heffernan. My sholder's in the way." were also mentioned, you get the picture. Anyway we all had tears of laughter rolling down our faces at the show he'd put on, and after he'd finished and the laughter was subsiding I meshed to Xanderisms and said, "Ladies and Gentlemen, the comedic stylings of Mr Robin Cook. Thank you, thank you. He's here through Saturday, enjoy the veal." This got everybody else laughing their heads off again. Probably needs a really funny situation with a warmed up audience though 'cause I tried it once before that in a not-so-funny situation and everybody just looked at me as though I was weird. Fancy that.

And finally, the reason I started this thread was because today at work a big quilting machine was stopped so I ducked under to see what was going on and one of the operators was re-timing a thread hook. Now, it's really my job to fix such things, but I couldn't be bothered at the time and most of the operators know how to do it. So when he saw me sitting down to watch he and offered me the allen key and asked if I wanted to do it. I said, "Well, I saw myself in more of a patriarchal sort of role. You know, lots of pointing and scowling."

I know there's more I've used but this is all that's coming to me at the moment. I can sometimes make you seem far wittier than you actually are. Sometimes it just makes people look at you funny. So how about you guys? Does anybody else do this sort of thing on a regular basis?

I use them all the time!! usually a couple a day, the funny thing is I do it without thinking about it they just sort of come out, The only one I can remember using today was "I like you use of the English language, or lack there of!", I'm so glad I don’t hang around people who watch Buffy, I'd have nothing to say, lol!

A friend of mine says that if you can't work a Buffy quote in at least once during the day, the day has been wasted. I extend this to Angel and Firefly as well, to make it a little easier on myself! ;)

Let's see....I use "What's your damage?" pretty much daily. "Yeah, I never get tired of hearing that" (YAY GLORY!!). I've used "And on the day the words flimsy excuse were redefined, we all stood back and marveled". I called a movie "morbid and creepifying" just yesterday. I've used Oz's patented laconic "Gladness" over and over and over. I've suddenly started spontaneously speaking chinese...only the easy ones though. The short ones. Like go se (sp?). And ta ma de (sp?).

OH! At dinner last night, in my school's caf, there was meatloaf. I really love my caf's meatloaf, but whatever. Someone asked me how it was and I said, just as they were taking a bite "Great! I think they've really cut back on the cat!" as a Buffy fan herself my friend responded in a perfect Xander impression "CAT?"

When I finish doing something boring,I say,"That was the most fun you can have without having any fun." I also say,"Bored now."I think every Buffy fan says that lol.

I think we all find ourselves saying something from the show.

I know I've said many of them. My boyfriend and I constantly use quotes from "Beer Bad" We get stuck on 'foamy' alot!

Anchovy

FOAMY! That's our code word (shh, don't tell). Most of my friends are all underage, so when somebody finds some nice 21 year old to buy alchohol for them (I said shh don't tell!!) that person calls everybody else, says "Foamy!!" and hangs up. Dumb i guess but (HEY HEY HEY! I told you not to tell!) Young'uns please do NOT learn from my bad example.

The one I'm using all the time these days is just the single word, "nifty..."

Speaking of which, it's kind of uhh...nifty, how this is one of those topics that just keeps turning up throughout the years.

Here's a link to the most extensive one I've ever seen here.

Buffyisms (http://www.buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?t=4330)

Good for reference I think.

I use Buffyisms a lot. I especially tend to add -age on the ends of words. But if you want to hear someone use Buffyisms constantly, go talk to Freakydorky. No conversation over five minutes long passes without her saying something from Buffy or Angel. ;)

Xander

I tend to use Xanderisms mostly. Times at work when it was wicked crazy (Faithism) I turned to someone and said "Shoot me, stuff me, mount me cause it'll be hella more fun than this." And as you can tell I used "wicked" and "yo", ala Faith. I said to someone the other day "Its the money yo" and they just gave me the oddest luck. Ah the fun.

Will think of more Buffyisms and post them tomorrow, gotta dash off.

Oh one more, in English we did a mock exam and had to write a newspaper article on any english topic we wanted, so I chose the rise of American English in Britain. I titled the piece "And in some language that's English?"

Ohhh Nifty....love and use that lots...but i don't count it personally as a Buffyism for myself...as i've been saying it since i was like 5......

Geez, thanks N4H (sarcastic). Now I'll never have a normal conversation again!: confused
Seriously though, I'd thought I was the only FREAK who did this so didn't imagine there would be other threads about it...
Anchovy: I haven't been able to stop saying "Gladness" the last couple of days!

LOL, n4h! I'll have to print that out and keep it in my wallet now!

So far I've only used a couple of phrases from Buffy in normal conversation. And since none of my RL friends are Buffy-obsessed like me, it makes for funnies! I've used "5 x 5" and "Bored now!" a bunch. I have gotten a couple of weird looks, too.

I can say that I am horribly guilty of adding -age to the ends of words. I drew an odd look from my friend when we were watching The Lord of the Rings, and the section where Aragorn cuts Lurtz's head off, I said ''Wow, cleavage!''

Black Eye Guy

I herd a great one today from Whats my line, Buffy says 'Do I like shrubs' and Xander responds with 'Thats between you and your God', I so plan to use that.

I am really working on this, but since I mostly hang with international student, the language we use is pretty limited and they stare at me when I say funny sentences (not that that keeps me from doing it though ;) ). But yeah, lots of fun and now when I'm getting back to reading Slayer Slang I think I'll do that way more... mhm.

Xander

Actually, I've been thinking about it and I think I use more Faith-isms. I say five by five at times, but then have to elaborate. Also I say "Dude I've got mad skills", but often when im at my least skillful. And last night I replied to a text message about five hours after it was sent so when he questioned me I just said "Dude, I've been mad busy." Just that kinda thing seems Faithesq to me.

Me and my sister (who is also a Buffyverse fan) will just sit there and quote lines back to each other while we're in the middle of a conversation...like we'll be sitting there talking and all of a sudden I'll go "You named me Randy Giles?!?" and she'll reply with "why not just name me 'horny Giles' or 'desperate for a shag Giles'" and then we will both just crack up. We also do this for Heather, Fern Gully, and about a bazillion other shows/movies...

I'm always interjecting lines from Buffy into everyday convo though, I do it without realizing it...glad to know I'm not the only one though!

My two labradors regularly attack the kitchen bin when we go out - we have an elastic bungee tie around it now, but on days where we have forgotten, the whole house is a mess with rubbish and half chewed veg peelings everywhere. The last time this happened, I found myelf saying 'Uh-oh.... major trashage' so I am well aware of the 'age' isms!

I think of it as my duty to work at least one Buffy quote into daily conversation. And it makes for a far more interesting day! Yes, sometimes people just think you are plain weird, but that is compensated for by suddenly finding a fellow Buffy fan who recognises and responds accordingly. Then you are no longer the outsider freak, and belong in a little gang of your own - everyone else is the weirdo ;)

I used "I doodle. I do doodle. You too! You do doodle too!" the other day. And I tend to use "(word) much?" as in "morbid much?". And...in English, i explained "The hardest thing to do in this world...is to live in it" in my daily writing assignment. And I've DEFINATELY used "GOD! What's ur childhood trauma?!"

I was revelling in the prospect of the weekend only being a couple of hours away today, and as I walked past a packing line I started singing a song that went a little something like this:
Weekend's comin'
Weekend's comin'
For you *point at perplexed worker*
And you *point at amused worker*
And you *point at scowling supervisor*
So, the supervivor promptly enquired what drugs I'd been doing, to which I replied, "I have the proportionate excitability of a puppet my size! I'm a wee, little puppet man!" As the scowl turned to a worry frown I added, " I don't have cable, so I have to make my own fun."

Now I've got to look forward to a urine test, though...

the other night i used "could be exchanged for goods or services"

I'm a stickler for saying, "What is your childhood TRAUMA?!" My friends actually consider it something that defines me.

Also, when something cool or incredibly funny happens, I go, "We should video that and show it every Christmas."

When my friends are being weird I tell them, "Your Earth logic does not resemble our Earth logic."

Also, one of the nicknames I gave my kitten is Miss Kitty Fantastico. And it must be said like Miss Kitty FanTASTICO. Lots of exuberence, and pep.

I also tend to add -age or -y at the end of words. I do it a lot here. BuffySpeak has become a part of who I am now. What can I say?

Kali

I have some random hobbies (quilting being one of them) and a friend visited and looked shocked that I can do practical and creative things with my hands.

I just found myself saying 'What, I'm not allowed to have layers?'

To say they looked at me strangely is an understatement :)

I do the putting an -y in the end of things thing all the time, my friends think I'm strange (or maybe they just thing I'm really bad at English, I'm not sure)..
Usually when I say quotes they just don't get what I'm trying to say though, so I kind of stopped doing that, hm..

Here's all the ones I could come up with:

That was nifty

____-ness (lol I can't even tell you how many words I have for this one)

____-age

____-y

Hello to the imagery!

(word) much?

Smoochies

What's her/your/his deal?

This is the part that's less fun

It's funny how the Earth never opens up and swallows you when you want it to.

chocolatey goodness!

Note to self: (humorous comment)

You have a something face

SNOOPY DANCE! (not really a buffyism I know, but I use it a lot)

You're sweet, a TERRIBLE liar, but sweet

Like I said, I'm sure there's LOADS more, but that's what first came to mind. Buffy-lingo is like a part of my language now, I don't even notice when I use one of the phrases

Since I'm talking swedish almost all the time it's not very easy to work buffyisms in to the conversation, but I live with people from all over the world now and use english more frequently. And last week, I was going to the bathroom and someone told me to take it easy, and I replied: "I've got a system".

Lol..yeah it comes without thinking...and everyone is usually like whaaat?
usually when someone is getting on my nerves...or just being taking forever to explain something I'll say "In 5 words or less." from when Buffy said that to spike and in turn he said "out..for..a..walk..b--ch."
