I think this has been discussed before.. heh. Anyway, I could always unserstand Dawn. Yea sure I don't think I would be around when she was screaming and stuff, but I think it's unfair to just say she was annoying without trying to understand where it all came from. Being a teenager with all the hormons running in every direction is hard enough as it is, and she was exposed to a lot of stuff that regular teenagers doesn't have to cope with.

I totally agree with you she had every right to be annoyed, but that one just annoyed the crap out of me, I think it was more the way she said it actually :)

She's a kid. That's what kids do when they are upset or being snotty. It's definitely annoying, but you have to deal with it!

Yeah probably but I wouldn't have that annoying voice! I think that is what it is about Dawn. Her voice when she is having a tantrum gets so high pitched and whiny!
I really hate all the quotes mentioned below! The Get out, get out, get out bit makes me cringe everytime and her Be Glory speech. I just want to slap Dawn and shout 'Quit It'.

I think it's actually a credit to Michelle's acting how annoying Dawn is. She's supposed to be after all. I mean she can be hit and miss, but I think she did a great job with dawn.

Oh I totally agree, I'm not saying that Michelle is annoying I love Michelle but Dawnie! Come on you have to see the annoyingness!
I know she is supposed to be really annoying but come on, some of the things she does and says must rile you at times! I think if they don't then there must be something wrong with you! (not saying you as in you caritas, just people in general).

It's strange to see Michelle Trachtenberg as anyone but Dawn, as she is who I'm used to, but I remember her as Harriet the Spy, and she wasn't anything like as whiny! So we must give her credit for her good portrayal of an annoying adolescent.

Is "Get Out! Get Out! Get Out!" a Dawn's quote? And from which episode?
VisionGuy
12-26-2005, 11:41 AM
Yeah, you could say that Dawn has her VERY annoying moments but I really liked her character. When I first saw her in the ep of Buffy VS. Dracula I was like "WTF?! Buffy has a sister?!" She was a nice addition to the cast because by season 5 everyone had grown up and I feel that they needed someone a little younger in the mix also. They tried to do the same with Connor but him I started liking in season 5 of AtS.

Blood ties, in season 5. I think (like 99.9% sure :))
I think Michel really did an excellent job as a whiney person, she was probably told to be an annoying kid, giving justice to the amount of time Buffy complains about her, but she did not just annoy Buffy she annoyed the audience, I think that is really impressive its like your right there with the characters feeling what they are, I mean that just plain rocks! :)

I believe it's from "Blood ties", after she found out she was the key and Buffy and Joyce are trying to talk and comfort her.

I believe it's from "Blood ties", after she found out she was the key and Buffy and Joyce are trying to talk and comfort her.
I think "Get out." is quite a Dawn quote. She did it in Older and Far Away too, but quiter, and just once. Didn't she do it again in "Him"? During one of her "RJ is my soulmate" jags? I think so..anyway, everybody who's ever seen my art knows I adore Michelle, but Season 5 Dawn usually rubs me the wrong way. Love Season 6's Klepto!Dawn and Season 7's "So close to being empowered" Dawn, though!

Yes..I've been a teenager..I've known people like that..but her and her demonic yelling just really annoyed me at times..
Hey we've all been there....but if I had thrown temper tantrums like that I would have expected to get some sense smacked into me. It's one thing to be a teenager but it's another thing to act like a spoiled little brat.
I've noticed that throughout all of the seasons Dawn tends to turn everything into something about her. Something could happen to Buffy and Dawn will turn around and say, "How could you do this to me Buffy??" I mean...come on.
I've never liked Dawn though....

Being 14-15 doesn't give you an excuse to act like a spoiled brat. I realize that kids react differently and can't always be expected to deal with things in a mature way but being a kid is really no excuse for the extent of Dawn's behavior in my opinion.

Kimm I so agree with you here! We have all been 14 or 15 at some time but I know for a fact I never ever, acted like Dawn did. Now I know she had all the family crap, like mum dying and finding out she was the key etc but other teenagers have problems too and they don't react like Dawn did in fact they usually grow up faster because of it. Dawn just turned into whinger of the year and took it out on everyone around her! She seriously annoyed me.
I also have to agree that I hated the way she treated Buffy!

But hey, can you blame her? What would you do if you found out u were a key and been alive for a few months?
Summers Blood
01-07-2006, 02:38 PM
Yeah I can blame her! So what she found out she was the key, but everyday teenagers find out there parents are splitting up or they lose a parent, or they lose there personal belongings in the hurricanes and other natural disasters that plague this earth. Yes it must have been upsetting for her but other teenagers have to deal with problems in their lives, some find out that they are adopted when they didn't know, that is similar to Dawns experience, but they don't scream and act up all the time.
Some do but eventually they get over it. Dawn used it as something she had over her mum and sister. She used it as an excuse to be horrible to them and that is what annoyed me about her.
Cordelia Chase*
01-07-2006, 04:04 PM
Yes but u find out that you were just made and had fake memories inplanted in you........
She was still a spoiled brat before she found out she was the key....the only difference is that after she found that out she used it as an excuse to have temper tantrums. :cry2:
I may be coming across as harsh but I did honestly find myself hoping with all my might in every episode that she would somehow die.

People are always so hard on Dawn, geeze, she was a kid.. Sure she was annoying at time, but I'm sure she had her reasons to. Like Summers Blood said, things happen in our lives all the time.. I'm sure it did in Dawn's life too, even before she found out she was a key. But the thing is that we deal with it differently. Sure she dealt with it by yelling and being annoying, lol, not saying she's perfect in any way.. But annoying wasn't all she was, she's really sweet at times as well :)

I like Michelle Trachtenberg, I think she's a fine actress and she did a fine job on BtVS. But I've come to wonder if she was really the best choice for Season 5 Dawn. The adjective I see most often for Dawn is "annoying". I think somewhere on the S5 DVD special features there's a comment by one of the producers that they were originally looking for someone younger to play Buffy's sister. Maybe a 10 or 11 year old "Dawn" might have gone over better with the Buffy crowd, and might have fit in better as the Key. As a 14-15 year old she was loud and intrusive being thrust into the set of characters we had come to know for four seasons previously.
After Season 5, I think a 15 or so year old character was a better fit to the Buffy world, and people seem to complain less about Dawn towards the end of the series.
BTW I'm okay with Dawn as well and certainly with Michelle Trachtenberg. The series is what it is and I don't want to dwell on second-guessing.

Right on, watcher1006. I liked Michelle in the role, but I have to agree that it would've worked better with a younger Dawn. Think of a poor defenseless ten-year-old up on the platform at the end of season 5, slowly bleeding to death and crying and waiting to die.

Lol i actually used to scream that...... When my dad would follow me into my room, first it would be one get out then various others lol.
For a while i didn't like dawn now that the show is over, I really do... and i understand her, She's just a normal kid and growing up in a house where basically everyone seems all powerful has gotta be hard, She could be annoying at times but what kid isn't?

It is rather annoying actually, I really do have to agree with that.
I mean, it's okay to be upset and everything but myself and my friends think she has these little 'hissy fits' a little too often. It even continues into season 6...I remember it happened in the episode "Older and Far Away." It was quite weird and random actually. She wanted everyone to spend time with her so she made that wish, though she didn't know it was a vengeance demon. She finally has the time and then she yells at everyone to get out, it was pure wining and it was totally uncalled for.
Then in the episode 'Him' I think she did that too. I don't think she yelled it three times but she said it.
I think Dawn really needs to find her place, which I think she did when the series came to a close but my gosh, it took alot of time for someone who said she was 'all grown up' to find her place.

at first i thought Dawn was soo annoying and kind of a spoilt brat gettig her way all the time, plus always hanging around with Buffy if i was Buffy i'd get well annoyed.when she does that whole 'get out,get out,get out' thing i was just like please someone shut her up,but i guess i can understand why she was acting like that.when Glory started to hunt her down i started to like her more because she started to act more grown up and take responsibilty for things and she was willing to give up her life to save the world, which takes a lot of guts.
although in season 6 she did start to get a bit whiney again but i cant blame her because she could tell that Buffy wasnt herself and she wasnt getting to bond with her and do sister things,i mean Buffy wasnt the only one who experienced a death Dawn had to go through that herself, and Buffy just tried to deal with that herself and not include anyone in it.i liked Dawn the whole way through season 7 though.overall i dont think she was a bad person she could just be a little bit annoying at times, which is kind of like her sister, cos Buffy can be annoying at times as well lol

I would hate to see how annoying I was as a teenager. And I wasn't even a ball of energy transformed into a girl--I was just a geek with parents that I fought with all the time and two little brothers who got the attention:) Looking back on our teenage years, don't we all wish we could have done things differently? I say, if I knew then what I know now, I would have kicked so many people's asses for treating me poorly (schoolmates, that is......), not taken things so seriously...and probably more stuff. I don't blame dawn for the way she acts...in fact, i think its a pretty accurate portrayal of teen angst. (I personally put holes through most of the doors in my parents house by the time I was 18, so maybe 'get out get out get out' is preferable):)

Hahaha I always do that Get out! Get out! Get out! thing to my boyfriend because he thinks its SO annoying, but when I was a little kid I would SCREAM bloody murder if i didn't get my way, I still do every once in a very great while! lol Dawn is annoying, but she's suppose to be, she's a little sister and if anyone knows what its like being the youngest its ME. I have a brother 10 yrs older and a sister 7 yrs older than I. Does anyone have any idea what torment they put me through? being a little sister isn't all that it's cracked out to be. You gotta be easy on Dawn, She had a lot to deal with, and it's not like Buffy ever let her do things with her friends, she was always so scared something would happen so Dawn never really had any good friends of her own, only Buffys friends, who treated her like a 10 year old.

I never used to understand Dawn i always use to find her annoying and whiney.to me she seemed like a little brat teenager who moaned about everything and constantly annoyed her older sister.but ive actually grown to like Dawn a lot and i get where she was coming from and why she acted the way she did.i watched season 5 for a third time this week and she didnt bug me,i mean that scene where she screams 'get out,get out,get out' i still find a little too high pitched for my liking but i didnt find it as bad as i used to.
i guess i understand where shes coming from more than i did when i first watched this season because ive been through stuff over the years and have acted in the same sort of way so i get it more now.

I think that for many fans, seeing Dawn in Season 5 for the first time (assuming one sees the last three seasons in order) was difficult. After seeing three seasons of her and watching her Season 5 story in repeats, I suspect it's much easier for them to accept her and the way she behaves. That was certainly true for me.
For four seasons of the show the Summers home was Buffy and her mom. Then Dawn drops in out of nowhere. Acting bratty and whiney isn't out of the ordinary for someone in her position (not to mention the "extraordinary circumstances of her origin", in Giles' words) but it may not have felt right for this newcomer to act that way. I think it took time for Dawn to gain legitimacy.

How can you blame her for being jealous? Her sister is a superhero and she's a teenager, and it's natural for her to think Buffy gets more attention. Not only that, it was true.

I've tried to be understanding if Dawn but I just don't like her character that much. I did like her in Potential though, and her scene with Tara in Flooded:
DAWN: Right, fifteen. As in *teen*ager. You know, if you don't let me look at the pictures, I'm gonna learn everything I know about demons on the street.
Tara sighs, hands her a book.
TARA: Knock yourself out.
DAWN: Thank you. See? (sits) No biggie. I can totally handle it.
She opens the book and checks out the first page.
DAWN: That's a weird place for a horn.
She looks again, slowly closes the book.
DAWN: (quietly) That's not a horn.

i don't mind Dawn in season 5 - at least she had a point! being the key she was an important plot device and she provided the impetus for very important character growth of both buffy and spike - but this purpose is largely lost in the last two seasons so its seasons 6 and 7 where she is really annoying. i think she should have died in the Gift, with Buffy. then buffy could have been extra, extra dark in season 6.

I have mixed feelings when it comes to Dawn. On one hand she had a purpose/plot to the entire season. Yet, on the other hand she no character development what so ever. I think that was what made Dawn the most annoying thing about Season 5. The fact that she never developed as someone other than being the slayers sister. She didn't even really have her moments. It was always"my sisters the slayer, she'll kick your ass". Yada, yada. Even in the episodes leading up to the finale, Dawn never matured, at all.
You would think that with the episode "potential" Dawn would've gotten a little maturity.....but, no. never happend.
Hopefully Joss will her character something to do in the comics, other than just being "Buffy's sister" or "ex-ball of green energy"

i am probably the only person who is not bothered by dawn's screaming of this phrase. i think dawn is awesome (check the avatar :)), and the times when she's not are when she's not supposed to be, so that she comes off as an annoying little sister. i do agree, however, that she did not get enough things to do after 'the gift'. then again, by the time season 7 came around, a lot of other people got neglected too.

Well, I can see where she is coming from when she is screaming "get out get out get out.", lets put it this way if you were told that you weren't real and that all your memories were fake and you were a ball of energy i'm sure you wouldn't want to sit around and give everyone a hug and have a tea party.. that's just not how its going to go...
and normally when girls or most girls are crying/upset/angry their voices get really high and squeak it's just how it goes if you listen. You don't really have control of your vocal cords when you're that upset.

In a family like Xander's, this kind of impassioned quarrel would tend to seem more like a routine event than an incident that evokes any kind of shock And my family, growing up, was more like Xander's than like Buffy's in this respect. Surely the worst example is my brother who is ten years younger than me; he has tended to be a brat with an anger problem. There have been many times when he acted much worse, with far less of a provocation.
The typical fan reaction to Dawn's brattiness seems to consist of finding it surprising that she acts that bratty. But these kinds of impassioned quarrels were as typical an occurrence in my family growing up as they are in Xander's family, rather than some kind of rare event. Therefore, I tend to feel that Dawn would have been only average if she'd lived in my family growing up, and so I'm not bothered by things like that.

I think the sulking about not getting enough attention is the most annoying thing about Dawn because it was CONSTANT. She only threw 1 or 2 temper tantrums; she was ALWAYS grouchy about nobody paying attention to her or spending time with her.
Don't get me wrong, I think she had a genuine complaint, but for the love of God, girl, grow up!

Dawn's temper tantrums did always use to drive me insane and initially I took a disliking to the girl but I've grown to love her in a strange way.
And whenever I think along the same lines of what you guys were saying about how she should grow up,I kinda have to remind myself, yeah she looks teenagery but technically, in season 5 she was a newborn and so on and so forth. So she's got all the wonder and curiosity and childishness of a baby with all the hormones and moods of a teenager. It's a dangerous mix.
And I love any reference to Pre-Sunnydale Dawn (You know before Joyce and Buffy moved) because you get a glimpse of what Joyce and Buffy remember and well...little eight year old Dawn just seems so darn cute! That it's just hard not to love her just a little bit at least. I adore Little!Dawn, haha.
But yes, her tantrums were always a trial. And her whole 'no one pays attention to me' gig in later seasons did make me think 'okay, remember your sister and her friends are constantly fighting for their lives, not to mention Buffy just got sucked out of heaven. They haven't always got the freedom to ask how your day went'.
