View Full Version : Spike--A difficult character to comprehend

At first I did not like Spike.
Then after he didn't tell Glory about Dawn's identity, I started to like him.
Now in season VI...he acts like he's the greatest thing since sliced bread only because Buffster chooses to be with him after her death-back-to-life scenario.
I know there are a boat load of people that take Spike over Angel, but as for me--with only 30 episodes left until the series finale--Spike has yet to capture my heart or attention.
I guess I'm still an Angel/Angelus fan.

Me too, I personally don’t understand why people find Spike to be, like the most amazing character on Buffy, he was funny, yes but he really wasn't that great!

Your thread title is a bit misleading. I though we were going to delve deep into the psyche of Spike and analyze his character. That being said, [SPOILER] Spike didn't grow on me until Chosen, when he died.

I agree, the thread title doesn't really fit. This discussion would probably be better in some other already open thread. Moving on...I love Spike, in every season that he's in. But he does annoy me in seasons 5-7 of Buffy. But in seasons 2-4, and 5 of Angel, he's the best! :)

Hid the spoiler in NightHawk's post for you, the reason I deleted your last post was because you quoted the spoiler post and were just talking about the spoiler anyways ;)
Anyways:
Most people seem to like Spike in the beginning and then less and less. Personalyl I like him best in season 5 and 6. (And on AtS of course ;) )
I can definitely understand where you're coming from.
I used to really not like Spike at all but after watching it all a 2nd time he grew on me a bit and I think I understand his character a lot more.
That said, I still like Angel much better.

Ive loved Spike all the way through. Spike was a complex character and thats why I love him. That, and he's hot ;). Anyway I loved him in season 2...and i loved him even more in season 6. Then I totally loved him in Season 7!

I don't think that Spike is a difficult character to understand. I do agree thought that he not always easy to like. He had a strong character change that not a lot of people reacted positively to. His personality is hard for some people to like.
I really like him though! But, I respected and appreciated his character transformation. I understand that not everybody did.

I don't think Spike is a dificult character to comprehend. He went thru a very big transformation in the course of both shows. I never stopped liking Spike because he always had layers. First he was an evil vampire in love, then he was just an evil vampire, then he got the chip in his head and he was good but still bad, then he fell in love with his worst enemy, and then he just kept going thru changes from there. After Cordelia of course, Spike is my favorite character in the Buffyverse.

I think the only thing Spike has going for him is hit looks, his charm and his hypnotic voice and eyes...
Other than that, he's a plain old character. I personally liked him alot because he worked his looks, charm and hypnotic voice and eyes on me!
Lots of people don't like him though and that's alright.

Well..if you want to get technical about it..everyone on Angel..and BTVS has been hard to like/love at some points. But to say he was not an important character is just crazy.

Angel was great until s5..just everyone was completely bleh..until the last few episodes..I wouldn't say he was boring..but yeah I did miss the old Spike..but to me whether you hated or loved him..his character changed so much.. Also like Cordy..so many layers..I loved how they both grew.
