Yesterday I had a discussion with a friend who stated that she didn't like Mal at all because he displays such an arrogant and self-confident behaviour to keep people in the distance. What do you think, did you like that char?

I really fell in love with Mal from the first minutes in Serenity. First of all I love his sense of humour. Dry, ironic and witty. Just like his somewhat macho attitude he displays from time to time, his witty comebacks are a way to keep people in their place and the advantage over them. He doesn't like to be in the defensive and humour and a self-confident appearance is the best way to keep people on a distance.

Mal is also old-fashioned. Values like honor and loyalty mean a great deal to him, even if he defines his own standard of these values. He respects people but not their role or social standing. Like he says to Inara: "I may not show respect to your job, but he doesn't show respect for YOU." That's why he gets along with so many different people. He may not always like them, but he respects them.

He is willing to go out of his way to protect the people around him, that he considers part of his family. That's why he keeps Simon and River aboard although they are a potential danger to him and the rest of the crew. I guess that's part of the good old *we never leave a man behind* soldier codex. I normally hate these cliches but Nathan portrays this part of his personality with a lot of sympathy.

His experiences in the war press down on Mal a great deal. I think he has troubles trusting people after he got left behind in that valley. He has problems talking about his feelings and sarcely opens up to someone or unless it is the right person. In short he is troubled and I have a soft spot for that kind of guys Add to that his mischievous smile and his overall attractiveness and you got me there drooling :)

I don't know the first time I saw Serenity(I hadn't seen Firefly) I didn't really give it a thought, but when I watched the series I really liked him for the same reason you have stated, But I just got serenity and I have been watching it and there are parts of it where he really was a total ass to the crew, Once to Simon and the other to at Books Mineing(sp?) camp!

Well, but that's just part of what he is .. a leader and when the crew was devasted after they found everybody dead they needed him to lead or they wouldn't have made another step out of this camp. He is hard upon them that's true, but that's just what he need to do to keep them going. After he ordered them to prepare Serenity you see how he nearly breaks down from the pressure upon him. It costs him just as much as the others but after all he is mililtary trained and supposed to keep his balance even under such circumstances.

When he lashes out to Simon he just shows how scared he is. Simon and River always were endangering him and his crew but the whole range of that danger just became clear. But the fact that he takes them instantly in again shows how deeply he cares about them anyway.

I really like Mal's character on Firefly/Serenity, however, I do prefer him in the series. He is much more relaxed and playful in the show than in the movie. (Actually, I think the series is more playful in general but I still like the movie.) Like most, I wish we had more time with him in the series. I think we all would of eventually seen his character fully devlop and I doubt there would be a single person not drawn to him in one way or another. He also has an irresitstable smile and they way he talks made me have a bit of a crush on the guy!

First of all, just because you like a character doesn't mean you'd like them as a person if you knew them in real life. All I mean is that they can be super interesting and stuff as a character, even if they're less than nice as a person. Personally I love Mal, mainly cause of his sense of humour, but I also love the the sides of him that I know would bug me like hell if I knew this person irl. Mal is just an awesome character in my opinion, and his not so friendly sides are a big part of that :)
