View Full Version : Slightly strange question...

Okay, this may or may not stir up a hornet's nest and if it does, let me apologise in advance.
I was watching the first few epsiodes again and something occurred to me that I didn't really worry about too much the first time around coz everything was so new: is Kaylee bisexual?
The obvious stuff is Kaylee and Inara's interactions and Jayne's comments surrounding Kaylee's admiration of Simon being a doctor. The implication is pretty clear.
And yet all of the intimate moments shown on screen are between her and men. Is Joss trying to make a subtle characterisation point without involving the censors (as a lesbian encounter onscreen no doubt would), or am I reading too much into some early comments at the beginning of the series.
It worth noting that later in the series, is doesn't really come up.
Ideas, comments, random insults?
What happened to good TV?

I thought this when I first saw it. It was the hairbrushing scene I think that did it for me. Inara and Kaylee seemed close. Although on a second viewing I think it just showed the closeness of their 'sister' like relationship.
Also I think it was to show that Inara was a sexual person with everyone. Just in an intmate atmosphere that she creates in her room(or should I say shuttle) in particular.
Thats my interpretation anyway.
i always took it for a sisterly relationship, as WHTGTV posted above. i think it's Inara's sexuality that makes it seem like there is something else going on, so i can understand how someone else might think this

Yeah, well it kinda goes that way later in the series. Jayne's talk of Kaylee "wanting to be a gynecologist" made me think otherwise on top of the reactions of Inara.
I had also thought that Jayne made reference to Kaylee getting "lubed up over some big-city *dame*" (the subtitles are no help), but I had another listen (or three :) and I think he actually says "big-city dandy", a reference to Simon (who she is obviously taken with even at this early stage).
So now I'm pretty much settled on close female friends. And to be honest, without the sub-text, nothing in their relationship is really sexual in nature.
And given Jayne's lurking near the window when Kaylee is shot, maybe its just Jayne being jealous.
Wow, talk about your overanalysing.
Cheers,
Dusty

See that's entirely possible, maybe he said "Kaylee just wishes *he* was a gynacologist". Which is my second misheard line from Jayne in that scene, so I'm going to call Jayne 'Mumbles' and put it all down to wishful thinking on my part :)

Fat head!! :) lol, I just wanted to throw a random insult ;)
But I think it's an intresting idea, Kaylee is a very sexual person It's wouldnt suprise me that if she turned around and said she was attracted to women!

I also wouldnt be suprised if Kaylee was bi-sexual. I get the impression that she is 'imaginative' (for lack of a better word) when it comes to sex.
Hopefully she doesnt get bored with simon LOL :)

I never got the feeling that Kaylee was bi-sexual.

In the scene where Inara is brushing Kaylee's hair, I didn't get a sexual overtone. If anyone (especially any girl) has ever had someone else brush their hair, it's a lot like being a pampered cat--it feels really nice and it's relaxing, but it's not necessarily a sexual thing. I saw Inara and Kaylee's relationship as a very close friendship.

Pampered cat- that is EXACTLY the feeling! Haha. But I totally agree; hair brushing tends to be a close friendship/sisterly bonding thing and shows a close, yet platonic relationship. I don't think that scene shows sexual tone at all, but perhaps it's Kaylee's attitude in general that maybe could give off that vibe? I mean she's not exactly Miss Restriction and Reserved.....

True, but I've never seen her act that way toward women. Even in the brothel, she was more interested in the "boy whores" than anything else.

Kaylee bi? And Jayne's conversation with the shepherd about masterbation makes them lovers, then there's Mal's interaction with Wash..................

I would say no to Kaylee being bi. And her and Inara together is a sister thing, not a romantic thing in my opinion. Inara calls Kaylee Mei-Mei at one point but I think it was just a friendly thing. If Kaylee was bi, ok, so what, but I don't think she is.

I AM NOT BI! Sorry but this conversation is making me think your talking about me cause my name's Kaylee too. I am really confused now. I have watched some episodes of Firefly and when I'm not paying attention or I get sidetracked I hear one of the characters call out "Kaylee" and I think they're calling me! My mum thinks it's hilarious though.

There was definately something about her for sure! Maybe just strong platonic chemisty, that came across that way? We'll never know ;)

i kinda think everyone is so yeah, but kaylee seemed to really like inra with all her pretty stuff and she was always so oily and in the typical male role of mechanic, so it was a great friendship i thought

I got the impression what she was open-minded and liked to flirt. And to like to flirt isnīt the same thing as to want to sleep with people if anyone thought what. In my mind she definitely prefered men but if the right girl came along she wouldnīt turn her down.
And being a guy I never really got the whole brushing each others hair. Sure, it can sometimes be nice to be pampered. But by my male friends? *shivers*
