Begin discussing season one's finale episode Prophecy Girl.

We could probably not only discuss it, but also compare it to what we talked about in Welcome to the Hellmouth. How had the characters changed? How had the season developed. Any common threads still going strong in the finale from the premiere?

_______

All I have to say, first off...is that the part that really gets me about this episode...the thing that brings me back to it each time is when Buffy is walking down the street in her dress after being drowned and the theme song is playing. I just LOVE that part!

Get discussing everyone! :)

i am so totally with you on that SB!! i love that scene, with Xander and Angel walking behind her like her backups! everyone i talk to hates that scene, they think it's cheesy and corny. but love it!

i'm not really fussed on this ep. i guess it was good as a first season finale, but i thought, knowing what happens in later seasons, the writers could have gone a little further with it...don't know how, but they could have done something. i know they left it without a cliff hanger becasue they didn't know if the show would be renewed, and i get that. it was a nice little happy ending. but getting used to all those other cliff hangers, it makes me feel weird knowing that there isn't one for this ep.

i think the characters did change, even in those first 12 eps. Willow grew a little stronger by forcing herself to walk into the room and see the full carnage of what the vamps did to Cordy's date and his friends. Willow from WTTH would have run screaming in the other direction. Willow's speech to Buffy in her bedroom, about how the vamps came into their world and had fun, is one of my fave speeches from the show. i just love how strong Willow sounds in it.

Xander running to get Angel to help him would never have happened earlier in the season. Xander hates Angel, but he knows he can't help Buffy alone, so he recruits the only person he knows will come with him. Xander admission of loving Buffy was very subtle but very powerful, and i thought it worked perfectly for all three of the characters.
Angel: You're in love with her.
Xander: Aren't you?

i thought Cordelia's riding to the rescue was very fitting, very in character for her, but it was still a good way to get her involved with the Scoobies. i don't think the Cordy before 'Out of Mind, Out of Sight' would have been so willing to help Willow. but going through that maybe helped her accept that there are different people, and she can associate with anyone.
i also think that Cordelia biting the vampire and asking him how he likes it was pure class! so Cordelia, and so very something she would do in a crisis like that!

im not in the mood to write a lot now, which probably brings you all joy, but im just gonna say since no one pointed it out, that i liked that xander finally asked buffy out, and felt bad for him when he was rejected. i never really liked bander (or xuffy?) but i adore xander, and as with all the other characters i love, i feel so bad along with them when they're in pain. just like i felt with willow, when xander asked her to go, BUT ONLY CAUSE BUFFY SAID NO! that must've been a hard blow for her to be a second choice, and she makes that clear:

Willow: "You think I wanna go to the dance with you and watch you wish you were at the dance with her? You think that's my idea of hijinks? You should know better".

but still, she really does want to go with him, just as a first choice, and i feel so bad for her! its very sad when she calls and he hangs up on her. and its also so telling for him (about how sad he's feeling) when he's just lying there on the bed, listening to country music, and then he hangs up the phone and takes it off the hook without even listening to who it is. im feeling very pathetic saying all this right now, and very much like a big btvs dork, so i must not be saying it right, but i hope its at least clear how bad i felt for the both of them! and thats part of what made me like this episode and part of the genius of joss.

I did feel sorry for Xander too. He's so dejected, lying on his bed listening to the 'music of pain'

:)

I just think about how this episode would've been so much better with a clearer picture. If we'd had the quality that the later seasons had technically.

But SMG during her crying scene...that woman always makes me cry. She is so good!
