4. Willow Rosenberg ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," 1995-2002)
Job Title: Best Friend, Computer Nerd, Super-Wiccan
Curriculum Vitae: Willow (Alyson Hannigan) always hinted at having more passion in her than most "Slayer" plotlines allowed for. For a few seasons she amiably pored through Giles' library -- or searched on her laptop -- for occult lore to aid the Scooby gang in nailing whatever horror threatened. Then the sweet geek fell for Oz (Seth Green), rocker and part-time werewolf, and began to tap into her darker self. That self strutted its bad big time as Vampire Willow (Season 3's "Doppelgangland"): the leathered-up redhead went all splatter-punk with a vengeance, "bored now" her catch-phrase for the bloody end of every atrocity. But it took the careless murder of Tara, the white witch who brought out Willow's Zena-love, to really loose the good girl's demons.
Severance: Just before Dark Willow sucks him dry, the warlock who once hooked the freshman witch on overdoses of magic whispers seductively, "When you first came to me, you were just a little slip of a girl. Look at you now -- so growed up. So full of dark juice. And you still taste like strawberries. Only now ... you're ripe." Ripe indeed: Her streaming hair gone sable, her eyes great black holes, Buffy's best friend is ambulatory apocalypse, skinning Tara's killer, surfacing years of sidekick resentment by challenging the Slayer to a death match, threatening to unmake a world of pain and despair. Finally, Xander, who loved Willow unrequited through many a "Slayer" skein, braves Dark Willow's metaphysical rage, resurrecting -- at the last second -- the emotions that made her human.
There's a nice pic of Dark Willow at the top. Btw, the got the date wrong. It's 1997-2002, not 1995-2002.
