This looks like it could be fun. Michelle Trachtenberge will be in a remake of Black Christmas.

In case you hadn't heard about this horror remake, amongst all of the other ones, the guys behind the FINAL DESTINATION franchise, Glen Morgan and James Wong (also of the underrated WILLARD fame), have already shot their own take on the 1976 BLACK CHRISTMAS, starring a bunch of hotties including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Michelle Trachtenberg, Katie Cassidy and Lacie Chabert. For anyone who doesn't know what the film is about: In BLACK CHRISTMAS, a sorority house is terrorized by a killer who makes frightening telephone calls before murdering the sorority sisters during the Christmas break. Sounds like a blast.

There's pics here.

Holiday slasher flick puts Christian groups in ‘Black’ mood

“Black Christmas” is making some religious groups scream.

The slasher flick is set to open on Christmas, much to the horror of some Christians, who are calling for a boycott of the movie.

“It’s a disgrace,” said Michele Combs, director of communications for the Christian Coalition, based in Washington, D.C. “The movie industry has really gone too far, and we are sending out an e-mail asking people to discourage others, especially young people, from seeing it.”

A remake of the 1974 horror classic, “Black Christmas” features the slicing and dicing of sorority sisters on Christmas break and stars Michelle Trachtenberg (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), Katie Cassidy (David’s daughter) and Oliver Hudson (brother of Kate). The movie, whose trailer plays the hymn “Silent Night” while blood flies, features the tagline: “the ultimate slay ride.”

“It’s another strike against Christmas,” said Robert Marley, co-founder of the Coalition to Save Christmas in Massachusetts (www.savingchristmasinmass.homestead.com). “It’s in bad taste. Not only dooes it send a bad message, it’s the further degradation of our holiday.”

Marley won’t make an issue of the movie on his Web site, however.
“Who is going to see it? It’s full of B-list actors,” he said. “It’s a joke.”

“Black Christmas” isn’t the first holiday-themed horror flick, but most Santa-centric slasher films steer clear of a Christmas Day release. The original “Black Christmas” hit the big screen Dec. 20, in deference to the holiday. Both “You Better Watch Out” (1980) and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” (1984) were released in November of their respective years, and “Silent Night, Bloody Night” hit theaters in April 1974. But Dimension Films, the distributor for “Black Christmas,” stands by its decision, saying in a statement, “There is a long tradition of releasing horror movies during the holiday season as counter-programming to the more regular yuletide fare.”

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights scored a victory last year when it forced the the retail behemoth Wal-Mart to return to saying “Merry Christmas” to customers but doesn’t want to get involved with the “Black Christmas” controversy.

“There’s not going to be a protest,” said Kiera McCaffrey, director of communications, who told the New York Daily News last week the film was “out of line.”“We’re not outraged. It’s a slasher flick. There’s no reason to get involved.”

Nonsense, said Combs.
“Christmas is one of our holiest of days,” she said. “It is galling that the movie industry would try to destroy the true meaning of Christmas by (releasing) a horror film on that day.”

Even though I like Michelle Trachtenberg and try to see the things she's in, I don't think I'll see this one. Geez, it's not like the basic idea of this movie hasn't been done before!

I wish MT well in her career and I'll be interested to see her move beyond those teen-student roles.

So whattaya think of these Christian fundamentalists who want to strike and boycott the movie, because it's coming out on Christmas day?

It makes me scratch my head a little. Even if you get past the point where the whole idea of it is silly, it's also just bad history. As I heard it the evidence seems to suggest it's unlikely Christ was actually born on December 25.

Well yeah, a lot of what the religious reactionaries in this country do gets my hackles up. Let's stay away from "intelligent design" and teaching "creation science" in public schools! I don't need to blow a fuse. Incidentally, it has always amused me when those people get upset over Harry Potter or shows like Buffy.

And yes, I seem to recall it was most likely that Christ was born sometime in the summer (but I'm not expert on this matter). Also trying to recollect from fuzzy memory, I think I once heard that the 25th of December is most likely associated with an ancient pagan festival celebrating the winter solstice.

But as for this movie, just the fact that those people are getting upset about it in and of itself doesn't bother me that much, not enough to go see it, even if it will help to ruin their boycott. I like to see their plans fail, yet I also think that releasing a movie like this on Christmas Day to try and make more money is in somewhat poor taste. I'm not getting emotional about it either way.

So to complete my wasted day (although this was actually the first of the three awful movies I watched) I saw this today. I cant decide which was worse. This, The Grudge 2 or the Return.

It was awful. Michelle wasnt in it enough. Shame since was the only good character. Even Lacey Chabert disappointed me. It was just horrible. And not even entertaining horrible. Ive never seen the original but it has to have been better than this.

Plus, the twist was so obvious.

This is just the kind of movie that was satirized in one of those old Ernest movies, Ernest Saves Christmas. Some Hollywood company--within that movie's fictional universe, I mean--is filming a slasher movie called "Christmas Slay." This Black Christmas movie is yet another instance of reality catching up with satire.

Except Ernst Saves Christmas came out in 1988. Black Christmas is a remake of a movie made in 1974.
