I saw that there's no thread about that episode and I decided do make one... You know - Tara episode and stuff.. :D
Tell me what do you think about the episode? Do you like it? Just anything that's on your mind about this episode. Hope that this topic's not getting deleted :D :)

Aww, I really like this episode. It was definetly the best (and one of the only? Wait, maybe the only?) Tara-centered episode. It's really sweet, especially at the end, when Willow is the first to stick up for her then everyone jumps in.

i liked this episode. tara's awesome so anything tara-centric is good with me, and as ladybug said, this is pretty much the only one. i love the last scene where they're dancing. its very sweet! and its cool how they float. i also love that first scene with tara's kitty story and miss kitty fantastico! i love miss kitty fantastico; she was adorable :: red ::!

ok im not a huge willow/tara fan but i kinda like their relationship. at least tara is way batter than kennedy ( she really sucks). i liked this ep because it was dif from the otheres. in season5 everything is based on dawn and that key thing and on buffy. so i think it was cool to change a little...

There was also a recent discussion of the episode "Family" in the Tara subsection of Cast and Characters, in the "Never Liked Tara" thread:

Seasons 3 & 4 Comments:
I've always assumed that Tara's recognition of her own possible demon-ness was the reason she sabotaged the spell to summon Thespia to find demonic energy that Willow tried to do with her in S4 "Goodbye Iowa". That was left totally unexplained at the time.
I'm not someone who thinks the continuity of the show was perfect, that the whole story of the series was laid out consistently in the creators' minds from beginning to end. Nor do I think it has to be. Maybe it wasn't this exact story, but in this case it seems they had at least something like this in mind for Tara back then.
Maybe the fact that Riley went off by himself to Willie's bar and wasn't present for the showdown at the Magic Box presaged the fact that he wouldn't be part of the Scooby Gang much longer. This episode had the return of Sandy, who Riley meets at the bar. She was the woman who was bitten by Vampire Willow at the Bronze in S3 "Doppelgangland". It took me a while to figure that one out.

Not a huge Tara fan either, although I did like her. This episode was unimpressive for me and seemed to drag on a bit, but I did like Buffy's speech at the end.
However, the gang NEVER truly treated Tara as a real friend, and I don't think we ever saw Buffy talk to her like a friend except for like two scenes in season six.

True. That's really sad though, that they never really made friends. Same goes for Anya and Buffy imo though. Then again, they all drift apart during these seasons... and Buffy didn't even have close friend talks with Willow or Xander too often in the last seasons...

As you may see, Family is my joint favourite episode (hard to pick) but yeh Amber/Tara is amazing and it was just a fantastic episode. The ending when W & T are dancing in the air is just so beautiful, and 'I can't take my eyes off you' suits it to a tee.
Really wish Amber had been given her name in the main credits after this episode.

i'm not going to lie. when amber was first introduced she kind of annoyed me. she was just way too....wierd. plus she stuttered alot and it might be insensitive but i just find that really annoying. it prolly didn't help either that i was a huge oz and willow fan and was annoyed that willow chose tara over oz, oz was just so cool. but i guess after this episode i really started to like tara, i came around hardcore. and i'll tell you the gods honest truth, no death in BtVS or Angel got to me as hard as her death (with the possible exception of joyce). i was angry and very sad after she died. so i guess you could say tara kind of grew on me.

Not sure how I'm supposed to take that as a non-offensive thing, but okay, that's your opinion and I guess we all have the right to be narrow-minded if/when we want to, ashame you have to feel that it's "gross" though..

Hmm saying its "gross" might offend people. Why do you think its "gross"?

I really love this episode, it's one of my favourite Season five episodes, it's the first episode where Tara seems to be more than just Willow's girlfriend, she seems more like...her own person.
I love the scene in which Mr Maclay intends to take Tara home and then Buffy says the "Family" speech.
Most of my friends who watch Buffy think it's a "stupid" episode but I think it rocks.

I adored this episode and i really loved the moral of the story, which to me seemed to be something along the lines of even if your family sucks ya can always create a newone, afterall like they say "friendsare the family your heart picks." One ofmy favourite quotes of all time.

I love Tara/Willow. I love Tara and nothing killed me more than when she died. So sad. :( I am a gay man, so I am not really big on girl on girl action, however, Willow and Tara, their love story was beautiful. I cried my eyes out in THE GIFT when Willow said "I always find you" or something to that affect. I also loved FAMILY. Great ep! :) I thought Amber was very good in it!! :)

I LOVED this episode. When Buffy called Tara her family...I balled. It was so sweet. And then the dance scene at the end. It was good enough to get on my iPod so...yeah. I love it so much. Great episode.

I loved "Family" obviously, look at my name; I like Buffy apart from tara, but tara's character, on her own, did a lot, she was the one who recognized Faith was impersonating Buffy, she helped raise Dawn and became a surrogate mom, she always had clues and knowledge to share, she saved Anya and Willow from death, and became Buffy's sole confidante in season six

This is the episode that made me love Tara, previous to this, I found her kind of annoying. But, yeah, the speech at the end always gets me.

Maybe it's not much to many people, but Tara's lopsided grin at the end was , to me, the high point of the episode. No dialog could have made the point any better.

Just a question- Was cousin Beth in on the secret during the episode or did she find out the same time as Tara?
Joyce Summers
11-15-2007, 02:17 PM
I personally think Beth was way too opressed by the male members of the family to care. In a way it was kind of like brainwashing I think, and Tara only escaped ending up like Tara coz she went away to college. What are the odds of her heading to a Hellmouth though?
I love this episode so much. I just think the final scene is just brilliant. When Buffy says 'you can go ahead and take her...you just gotta go through me' and then when Mr MaClay says who the hell are you she replies 'We're family'
And thanks to Spike we also get comedy in this scene which is nice. You know when Xander is all 'you're dealing with all of us' and Spike says 'except me. I dont care what happens'
And like White Avenger said that lopsided grin of Tara's is just perfect

I loved how Tara got her first real episode all about her.....
But it's very sad to think her kind of oppression goes on in the real world all the time, and can be so damaging to children

This is my favourite episode!
and my skin haha
I loved thet whole acceptance and family theme and I loved That it was about my favourite tara!
I loved the metaphor that magic meant gay ... "the lifestyle you chose" such a cliche parent to outing gay child phrase
What i didn't like though was that during thet whole buffy speech bit willow never said anything...I think that would of been a good time to show willows passion and love for tara and I think she should have made the speech.

Intresting you bring that up. Personally I thought it was perfect for Buffy to make that speech, because the audience already knew that Willow accepted Tara. What this was saying was that even if they didn't always get Tara, she was still a part of the "family". I thought it was great :D

I did like the whole "she is part of our family" thing. but i meant so her family knew that even though they dont agree with tara's lifestyle "choices" you cannot break them apart because of how strong there love is...I just wish she had said something because it would of been a fabulous message hehe

I didn't look at it that way lol. I didn't really think much about being a lesbian as her "choices". Although maybe that's what they had a problem with *shrugs* Seemed more like they were against her being a witch then being gay. Though I'm probably wrong about that lol

I like this episode. The scene in the Magic Shop always brings a lump to my throat, especially when Buffy says 'You'll have to go through me' and Tara looks so shocked. It's so sweet!

*scratches head* I could have sworn I posted here.
Anyway, this episode was just gorgeous. I think it also brought a complete full-circle of Buffy accepting Willow & Tara because I always got the impression that Buffy, although she loved Willow as her best friend, never really got the 'gay thing' and was somewhat heldback. Then, although it wasn't really portrayed a great deal, I think Buffy was jealous of Tara because suddenly Tara was around and Willow's focus was on Tara. But this episode, it was just like Buffy totally 100% accepted Tara, Tara & Willow and that she has to share Willow.
That's just my take!

I thought of it as a metaphor lol...by the way when i say "choices" im not saying its a choice, im gay and i believe it is a way of life something you are not something you choose...like its a part of you...i was saying it like thats what they think lol just saying hehe
