Anyone seen Dexter yet? Apparently Julie Benz is in it, and Drew Z Greenberg has written some eps. It's received great reviews.

SHOWTIMES DEXTER TAKES A STAB AT SEASON TWO

Acclaimed One-Hour Drama Series Starring Michael C. Hall Sets Production for Spring; Fall Premiere

LOS ANGELES, CA (November 2, 2006) SHOWTIME has ordered a second season of its freshman drama DEXTER, starring Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actor Michael C. Hall (Six Feet Under), it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, Showtime President of Entertainment. DEXTER premiered last month to widespread critical acclaim and ranks as SHOWTIMES top-rated series. Production is set to begin on 12 new episodes next spring and will premiere on SHOWTIME later in 2007. The series follows Dexter Morgan (Hall), an incredibly likeable forensics expert for the Miami Police Department who moonlights as a serial killer.

DEXTER has been one of the most talked about and critically lauded new series of the year. Said New York Magazine in its review last month: horrifying, intoxicating, seductive and thrilling, all at the same time. The Boston Globes Matthew Gilbert proclaimed, This fiendishly excellent new Showtime series turns blood splatter into a pop art form, like Jackson Pollock meets Annie Leibovitz. Additionally, Time and People magazines both named DEXTER one of the best new series of the fall season.

Dexter is a home run for us, both critically and in popularity. The show was launched at the height of all the broadcast networks fall premieres yet instantly became our #1 rated show, Greenblatt said. People seem fascinated by the moral ambiguity of Dexter, as played by the gifted Michael C. Hall. This character and the world of this show are a welcome addition to our premium line-up. Along with Hall, the series stars Jennifer Carpenter (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), Lauren Velez (New York Undercover), Julie Benz (Jawbreaker), Erik King (National Treasure), David Zayas (The Interpreter) and James Remar (Sex and the City). The series premiered in October 2006 and will air its season finale on Sunday, December 17th. John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton (Live from Baghdad, The Painted Veil), and Clyde Phillips serve as executive producers for the series. James Manos, Jr. developed the series for television (Emmy Award for writing "The Sopranos").

DEXTER is based on the compelling novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, a South Florida native. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexters homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators who are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.

Well from our discussions over at AD you know i'm loving it.

I had not heard of it until I saw an ad on The Futon Critic and read up on it. Basically if there ever was a tv show out there made for me to watch its Dexter.

The fact that half of my book collection is made up of Forensics, True Crime and Criminology texts books speaks for itself.

Technically we are not meant to feel for Dex because he's a killer but the way its done with his father protecting him and showing him how to hide himself its superbly done.

I'm fascinated by the relationship he has with Julie's character, she does bring out a tiny part of his humanity side, I say tiny because he said himself he does not feel anything.

I really have to get the book!

I *love* Dexter. I've only seen the pilot so far, but it's very fascinating. Sick, but fascinating. Definitely worth someone's time, and I'm thrilled it's been picked up for a second season already.

I'm getting addicted to it after two eps. I take back every nasty thing I ever said about Drew Z Greenberg. Here's a short bit on Julie's participation.

Benz maintains her dark side with 'Dexter'

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" actress Julie Benz is furthering her connection to the dark side of entertainment with the new U.S. TV series, "Dexter."

The 34-year-old actress -- who played an evil vampire on both "Buffy" and its spin-off series "Angel" -- is taking on the role of the abused girlfriend of a serial killer in the new Showtime original series "Dexter," said Us Weekly magazine.

The new series, which premiered on the cable network Oct. 1, focuses on a forensics expert who spends his nights apart from his girlfriend, played by Benz, killing other serial killers.

"Rita is a victim of domestic violence," Benz said of her newest role. "Prior to dating Dexter, she was in a 10-year relationship with her very abusive, crack addict ex-husband, and they have two small children from that marriage."

Us Weekly said Benz confessed that while her TV career has followed a sinister theme, she never actively pursues such roles -- she just finds herself presented with them after her tenure with "Buffy" and "Angel."

Will they always be 12? I don't know. Sopranos is also put out by Showtime, and it's 13.
Then again Showtime's the L Word is 12. According to the site below next season's Dexter is 12.

Ya know...I did that, but when I typed in "Dexter 1X12" they gave me a no-results page. How'd you do that? What did you use for a search query? I'm trying to figure out the best way to search those things.

I link to TVLinks for other people, because the page is all organized.

Oh but btw, thanks.

You've got me completely baffled now CS. By reading this thread you'd know the complete Season 1 of Dexter has now aired in the US.

You've posted your interest in seeing the show on 2 boards. Both boards contain links to where you can see it online. Here it is again.

http://www.tv-links.co.uk/Dexter_links.html

That page contains an organized list of episodes. They are links to a site called DailyMotion.com. It is a YouTube styled site. The way the legality of these sites work is if the network doesn't like the fact they're being shown, they have the site take the videos down. Until they do there's no law against clicking a link.

Even if your problem is you have a slow connection, you can still do it this way -

http://www.zeropaid.com/news/7469/How+to+Download+Videos+From+YouTube+and+MySpace

Dexter is shown on a pay cable station only available in the US called Showtime. It sometimes takes years before such shows are syndicated to other countries. Even in Canada, it took over 2 years before the showtime series The Sopranos was syndicated to Canadian TV.

I just saw the first season in full today, yep took me a while! I had to borrow the DVDs off my mate and I loved it! Im definatly raiding his DVD collection again when he gets the second season! (is there another season??)
It was kinda creepy but addictive at the same time...... I pretty much watched the whole lot in one sitting, some stuff was a little predictable but I still really enjoyed it :)

Season three´s starting this fall.

The series are based on books but I have no idea how many books there are (and how much is filmed) and how true the series are to them.

First book (Darkly Dreaming Dexter) is pretty accuratly re-presented within the TV series, only changing a bit near the end.
Second book (Dearly Devoted Dexter) is nothing like the second season, other than a few coincidental events.
Third book (Dexted in the Dark) is presumably nothing like the third season as it takes a new 'route'.
Fourth book (Dexter by Design) is out this year.

Only read through the first two, both of which were fantastic. Started the third but have yet to get very far.

I love this show. Its quite original I think. I have to admit I only realised Darla was on it last night though. *shame on me* She looked familiar, but without the whole evil vampire thing I just didn't recognize her. Oh well, I still love the show. ;)

In response to your rep DarklyDreamingDrusilla: I watched the first season then read the book and was worried that I would have to chose between the second book or second series but then found it was different so I could enjoy both :D

But nah, they were different but I enjoyed them both. Nice to see different takes on the same characters and such.

How could you not notice Julie Benz?
Did you blink each of the 5 or 6 times she was on-screen?
Her in all her naked loveliness - how could you miss that?

Of course I get that you're being sarcastic hehe...
Dexter can only get better from here on in!

Hi, my name is Airam and I am addicted to Dexter

Yeah I love it, its for sure one of the top 5 shows currently on air. I got into it S1, a friend told me about it and I spent the next two days watching it onDemand...now I don't have Showtime anymore so i have to be a tad more resourceful ;) but I've never missed an episode. Sometimes while watching I'll catch myself thinking about how well Dexter and Darla would get on :p She'd turn him and they would be mates for life!

I am loving Dexter! I look forward to it every Sunday. We only just got it on free-to-air TV a few months ago here in Australia so we are horribly behind, but i haven't spoilt myself for what's going to happen even though it would be so easy to, but you know, I don't really want to with this one which is weird because generally speaking i do love a spoiler.

Dexter is shown on a pay cable station only available in the US called Showtime. It sometimes takes years before such shows are syndicated to other countries. Even in Canada, it took over 2 years before the showtime series The Sopranos was syndicated to Canadian TV.

If memory serves,Dexter WILL be premiering its new season the same day it does stateside. Usually,The Movie Network(think HBO or Showtime, but in Canada)gets first shot at any show that either HBO or Showtime airs. And it usually airs the same time that it does in the U.S. for new episodes.

About The Sopranos: Dude...that was an HBO show. However,I think you're right in it taking two years before it got to BROADCAST TV on CTV(which put up warnings leading out of commercial breaks;this was-if memory serves-they were running it unedited(or with minimal editing). This is not the case with A & E's rerun package of the show, which had to be edited down.

I like that thought quote from Dexter in the last ep, when he's strangling the child predator, "You don't hunt my cubs".

I question his strategy on marrying Rita though. Where will he keep his blood slides, and how will he explain his frequent evening prowls?

This season is starting to get interesting. Is he getting human, or still just trying to appear human? Either way, I don't think it'll work.

Airam
10-25-2008, 12:25 AM
I think one of the things that makes Dexter so damn interesting is that he actually isn't a sociopath at all, maybe borderline, but not a sociopath. He doesn't just pretend to care about Deb, Rita and the kids he does actually care about them. Its why he killed you know who to protect Deb in S1 and you know who in S2 because of all little miss "pardon my tits" put Rita and the kids through, not just because she eventually committed murder, eventhough thats how he tried to rationalize it to himself. He does CARE. There are so many layers to him. He desperately wants to be a good father to his unborn kid, maybe give him or her the shot he didn't himself have, the shot Harry never allowed him to have. He wants to be "normal" he just doesn't understand why he can't quite get it right. And i do think its Harry's fault. Dexter is the victim of very unsual and disturbing childhood circumstances, it was confusing to him and he wasn't able to deal or channel his emotions correctly and to add to all that he had this nuisance of a so-called father buzzing in his ear to kill, kill, kill... bit ONLY the "right" people. Harry had his own agenda and totally bombarded it all over poor confused Dexter. I'm very inclined to believe that had Harry gotten Dexter help early on rather than train him to master his "tendencies", Dexter might have turned out very differently and hell, maybe even all the normal he so envies in others and dreams of being himself. Just my two cents. Also, GOD, I freaking LOVE this show!

There was a Dexter styled (inspired?) killing in Canada (http://www.canada.com/topics/news/national/story.html?id=607a4595-b713-4cc8-be37-e4813e4286e7). This of course, creates controversy, and the old nature vs nurture argument begins.

scobro
11-10-2008, 01:51 PM
I dont see how they can say it was Dexter inspired! For centuries writers have been doing what they write about for more realism. I mean, it's not like the guy ran out and killed a 'bad guy' (i could see that as Dexter-inspired) but he was a writer wanting to add realism to his manuscript. For pete's sake!

SpoonsAreCool
