View Full Version : Buffy's dress.
Everytime I watch the last episode of Season One I always think that the dress isn't really that great. I mean, it's pretty simple and pretty boring and sounds overpriced from the way Buffy reacts when she sees that her mum has bought it.
Did anyone else think it was kinda... crap?
i actually kinda liked it...but maybe that was just me.
it was simple and beautiful at the same time, and totally something i would have worn, if we had something like Prom or whatever it was.

I'm with Lyri. I actually liked it. It was simple but beautiful at same time. I'm really not much for dresses that are real fancy or frilly.
It could've at least been red or something. It was so... bland.

I liked it, it seemed appropriate for the occasion. :)

Simple was the point. I hate dresses that are too "involved". Simple is good. It wasnt bland and I assume it was expensive because of the material. Thats always what makes things expensive.
And red could have made it too sexy. She was a 16 year old girl. They werent going for sexy.

A 16 year old girl would definitely go for sexy. They're at the age. I think, I'm not sure, I've never been a 16 year old girl.
i think it's a good thing it wasn't red or slinky and black...'cause that was the point!
the dress was suppsed to show that Buffy was a pure, innocent girl, who was suppsed to sacrifice herself to save the world. Sacrifices always wore white!
if this had taken place in any season other than the first, then there would have been no way Buffy could have worn a pure whilte dress and pulled it off...no pun intended, for all you dirty minds out there! Buffy in S2 onwards wasn't the same girl she was in S1. yes, she was the Slayer and was forced to grow up before her time, but the thing with The Master really made her grow up a lot more, especially during the break between S1 and S2.

All dresses look the same to me :p... But I think that was okay. Red would have been out of place and black... well, black would have been sexy, but Buffy was still sweet and innocent back then.

The dress seemed fine to me. I totally agree with how the white symbolized her innocence.
Would've been better if it was a black PVC minidress with lots of leather buckles and stuff on and she had fishnet tights and suspenders.

huh? what the hell? i really hope this was some kinda joke.
how the hell could a 16 year old girl get away with wearing something like that?

LOL 16 year old girls get away with that all the time... Heck even in school they get away with it(alright some schools the skirt has to touch the tip of your middle finger but that can sometimes mean really short skirts)... and god knows the skirts in Buffy were tiny... so she could have gotten away with it...
But that would make her trashy and thats just not what they were going for.

Yes, that would be a joke. Breathe.

I'm really into the old fashioned/classy look, so I actually really like the dress. I, personally, would have gone for something a little more edgy, but I thought it was pretty. Especially since Buffy thought she was going to die and all. It seemed somewhat appropriate for her to face her fate in that dress. It was almost wedding/funeral like or something. Strange how those two meet in the middle, sometimes...

When I first saw the dress, I was like "WOW! That is.... an amazing dress!!" And now I am like, "MAN! That dress.... is.... kind of ugly!'
I loved it at first but now I hate it! It is too plain! It needs more on it.

Perhaps they could have kept the white theme but gone with a different style...who knows?

it was virginal.
the dress emphisised her innocence and purity as the virgin sacrifice. thats why it was white and floaty...

It wasn't a brilliant chalk white, I think that might have looked loud. It was more of a pearly colour. A quiet and understated symbol in its colour and its simplicity.
Yes, the sacrifice, innocence, or perhaps just the high school girl Buffy always wished she could be. More than one theme here, I think.

I thought the dress was classy and pretty on Buffy, besides, pieced with a leather jacket, amazing. Oh, and i a may be a heterosexual female, but her cleavage looked great too. The pearly white/cream mix matched nicely with her complexion, and I definitly like it better than Buffy's homecoming dress in season 3.

White is pure. That's why it was white. It shows her innocence & youth.
I liked the dress. It was plain but it still looked beautiful on her.

I agree with all those who say all the positive on the dress, but yeah the way buffy reacts doesnt match, unless it was the material then maybe
Haha! I was just thinking this same question when I watched a "Buffy" music video and it showed her in this dress!
I think the dress is okay but not, "OMG that's a beautiful dress!!" worthy because it was pretty simple. However, I liked how everyone loved it on the show and kept telling Buffy "nice dress." I thought that was funny.

does anyone else here remembers it was 1997???
the dress was good for the ocasion and also it was pretty nice being 1997 and all...
=)
^^ i was just reading and thinking the same thing
i remember wathcing it the first time and thinking "i'm so jealous, i want that dress so badly" but now i look and think oh dear, fashion faus pas
but it suited the time, it suited the themes of virginity/pure/sacrifice etc as has been mentioned
plus, anyone remember the tinyness of the s1 budget? it sure wasn't going to be the poofy vera wang gown of the 's3 fake out B/A wedding' style :)
but i still love it for it's prettiness and the bustline and the way it falls around her when she's floating face down - plus it was totally fight-friendly, no ripping necessary to allow for kicking etc

I liked the dress, she looked cute and white always reflects innocence.
The top part looked a carrier bag that was pearl coloured.

I think the dress was perfect for the situation and the episode. Just perfect. The allusions to innocence and funeral attire were definitely there and it was simple and awesome.
I thought it looked bad ass with the leather jacket and the crossbow, like some sort of modern fairy tale thingy.
It also may have been a slight throwback to the original Buffy movie, when Buffy wears the white dress to her prom, with Pike's leather jacket eventually. Not sure about it though.
^^ i don't know if it was
but i agree, i always thought it was a nod to the original
a nice little tie in with the whole theme of doesn't matter where you are or how you try to cahnge - she's still the slayer
and prom night is still about kicking and fighting and saving the world in a cute dress

funnily enough i just went to a dress up party on saturday night as prophecy girl buffy with the white dress and all... really good night. i agree with all the people on the 'white represents innocence and sacrifices'... i cant imagine that episode with buffy wearing anything except white.

But the skirt on the dress is kind of different, it makes it swirl like Buffy's a princess. And it makes the whole episode special, just like an old movie. I think the episode wouldn't have been the same without it, love the dress :P

Couldn't have said it better. Buffy's innocence is the focus of season one and two and the plain white dress, although certainly not glamorous was beautiful because it was such a visual representation of the situational changes and turmoil at hand.

I agree with Lyri, Phrophecy girl signalled the end of Buffy's innoncence. Although she had already had a very hard time and had to grow up it was only in this ep that she realised that being the Slayer wasn't just her job it was who she was and I think it was the start of her grieving for a life lost. Not just her physical death in the ep but the life she had hoped to have, one she would never have. The dress was the very last shred of that dream she had, I think it was absolutely perfect.Anything else would seem wrong now.

I didn't like the dress.
But I think it said everything it needed to say. The whole sacrifice thing.
Also, I noticed that Buffy wears a lot of white over the years, usually before she goes into a big battle or a big fight of some kind. They kept that theme up, man.

I loved the dress, and like you guys said it was perfect for the occasion but I don't get how some of you can say it wasn't a pretty dress. I mean it's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but I thought it was stunning.
I've always been a less is more girl when it comes to dresses so I love simple designs in simple colors that just look well....simply pretty.
With Buffy's dress, with a first look it seems nothing special but then when you look at the design- it's just fabulous. It has multi chiffon layers and the front parts rise ever slightly allowing it to move with her and behind her and showing off her cute shoes just enough. The material is fantastic and looks marvelously delicate and the neckline is so flattering, simple and gorgeous. I just adored it.
Perhaps the only slight- yet purposeful- problem is the whole 'virgin sacrifice' look it's got going on. Haha.
Plus, it was really in then, haha. I had a similarly designed dress (Though obviously not as expensive and one-of-a-kindy) in powder blue for well, I guess it would have been the same dance Buffy was going to. Except it was called a Summer Formal so I'm not sure if it was the same....::shrugs:: either way my point is, that dress style was very in just as some of you guys have already said.

I think it was a pretty dress. I would love to see it modernized for today's fashion. To me it kinda looked to symbolize her baptism into being the slayer she was to become from the girl that ran away from her destiny. It was beautiful. Personally, I think it would be better as a strapless or something a little more elegant. But then again, it was probably high digs in 97.

It was a pretty dress, fit for her age. Different shoes, though.
Hello Cutie
03-20-2008, 08:32 AM
Agreeing Monty.. different shoes please!
But the dress was very simple and elegant, and I liked the whole white 'virginal' effect. I mean, she was a virgin anyway, so that all good... but it just made the good and evil contrast between her and the Master so much stronger by having her in white in the middle of all that darkness... in hindsight though, it probably made her much easier to find when she was playing her game of 'hide and seek' with the Master before he killed her.
i think the symbolism of the white dress was far more important than the style/cut of the dress itself, but the dress worked for me as well, i thought it was pretty and youthful without being too obviously 'virginal/sacrifice dress'
...but the shoes were so in at the time, I can actually remembering coveting those shoes! (am I showing my age now?)

I liked the dress. I personally would have picked a different colour but like most people have mentioned, the white was significant, it represented her innocence. I wouldn't have worn the jaket though. It just didn't go :)

It fit the season and the time period. Late 90s was not the best time in the fashion world. (Part of the reason I love season 1, their big hair and short short skirts make me giggle.) But, I still find it to be a gorgeous dress. I wish I had enough talent as a seamstress to recreate it because I totally would~
And I think Buffy looked very good in it. It's hard to work the empress seam style dress (where the seam is just under the bust) because it can make girls look pregnant or overweight, but I thought it fit very nicely, so kudos to whoever fit it for her.
And as everyone has said, white fit the occasion. Innocence, purity, virgin sacrifice, etc etc.

The dress was okay... It was too simple for me, but made a point. "I am inocent" But could be a inocent with a little more glow lol
And it did the overweight pregnant effect :(
I wouldn't say that it was all that simple, it was chiffon-y and layered and had all the under bust detailing etc, plus i liked that there was no pattern or anything, it kept it classy :)

I changed my mind. I loved the dress.
I just saw it in better resolution and in context again instead of last time I looked at it, which was in a YouTube clip. The delicate beading, the smooth, shimmery silk or whatever that was... it was pretty gorgeous. Maybe it wasn't the best for her body type at the time (and it definitely didn't go with the jacket), but when Joyce opened the closet and showed Buffy the dress, I thought it was incredibly beautiful.

I love the dress.
I certainly would have been THRILLED to wear it at 16. It's pretty, shows enough, but not too much. I think it's great.
Plus, especially with the black coat, it looks not unlike what Buffy wears in the movie. Joss has a vision here, I think.
White dress, black coat...kind of the odd mix of sweet little girl meets tough biker chick that Buffy's supposed to be.
I don't think it's an accident that she also wears white in The Gift and Chosen. (Well, and when she takes on Adam, but that's not really a finale.)
Those three are the finales where Buffy really has to overcome and understand a lot to win. They're all the ones that are really about HER winning.
