I know, I always wondered how she could have forgotten her NAME. Or maybe it was that, when she was turned, she embraced her new life and didn't want to think about the old one, so she just forgot everything associated with it?
Otoh, Angel didn't really change that much from when he was human....he was still hedonistic, and proud of it. He was only remorseful after he got his soul back. So, anyway, he remembers Liam fondly. Darla didn't remember her former life with fondness.

Latin for Dear One, apparently.
Well, I suppose it's hard to forget things when you've not thought about them for over 400 years.

What actually happened is that someone was doing a little historical fact-checking and realized that the name Darla is first recorded less than four hundred years ago. In other words, the character Darla is too old to have been given the name Darla when she was human or even when she was sired.
So they put in this line to correct this historical error. It seems like the kind of thing that you can just ignore, but instead they did it this way.

So maybe her real name was Darla. Her trying to remember her real name, not being Darla. Would have meant she couldn't remember what it was !
And just because the name Darla wasn't recorded as a name doesn't mean it wasn't used as a name; for arguments sake, by a street prostitute.

She remembers being given the name Darla by the Master, so it wasn't her real name. That's why when she sired Angel he changed his name, and the tradition was passed on to Spike. I don't think Dru did, but then she barely responds to her real name, so why confuse her!
Oh, and I believe it was Old English, not Latin.

Yep, she was given the name Darla by the master, but that could have been her name anyway. If the master chose a name for 'Darla', then she should have given a name to Liam.
Imagine if Dru had chosen a name for 'Spike' his name could have been wrigglin' Worm. When Dru bit Darla she didn't give her a new name either.
That's a thought, I wonder if Buffy would have bedded, sorry carpeted a vampire named Wrigglin Worm?
