some comments I had after re-watching WAR ZONE
I thought it was funny when Wesley and Cordelia asked Angel why he didn't use his cell phone to call for help when he was trapped in the old meat locker because my Mom would probably do something like that. :)
I liked the reference Cordelia made about how bad of a place Gunn and his friends were living in... something like "and I thought my first apartment was bad". It was a quick reminder to how much had changed since the beginning of the season.

I just posted that "In the Dark" was my least favorite episode. Scratch that, it's tied with this one. I hated season one Gunn, this episode is so dull for me to watch.
this is my second fave Gunn episode. (first place goes to 'Double or Nothing.)
i loved Gunn's introduction. how he acted like this cold, hard street thug, but inside, the most important thing to him as Allonah, his sister. he was destroyed when she was killed, but i thought it was very brave of him to stake her. not a lot of people would have done that.
i loved Gunn in the early seasons...actually, i love Gunn up until S5, when they tried to turn him into a while lawyer guy. it just didn't fit.

I really liked season 1 and season 2 Gunn. After that, he got corny for me. Season 3 Gunn was okay but season 4 and 5 Gunn was annoying. This episode is one of my favorites. I love the part where Angel says, "Can I just see the check again?" LOL That was so funny. Gunn's introduction was really cool too. When he asked, "You expecing somebody else?" I was like "Um.. yeah. I was expecting Angel."
Dammit VG!! i can never rep you when i want to! lol
yeah, that line 'You was expecting somebody else?' TOTALLY cool. the first time i saw it, i was like 'Whoa! Who the hell are you and where's Angel?' lol

Gunn rocks. He's a very underrated character, the only time I didn't love him was when he bumped heads with Wesley over Fred, then taking Connor. His relationship with Wesley was my favourite of his relationships :p Don't like watching this episode much though because of his sisters death.

I really loved this episode. I've never been a fan of Gunn but It had it's funny parts in it. Angels brilliant use of his cellphone ("I'm the boss and I say where and when we use the cellphones"), and Cordy's relationship with David nabbit was very funny(didn't you love that guy in office space).

War Zone was amazing, Gunn was absolutely perfect!! Had lots of funny moments and a good amount of dark/sad moments as well which always makes a great episode!!! ie: I loved it ^.^
Gunn is a great character but this is nowhere near his best ep. The intro was cool and the Gunn and Allonna storyline is great and it gets some wonderful reverberations into the second and third season.
I actually thought David Nabbit was quite funny but somewhat of a stock character. It's little wonder he's only used for another couple of episodes because he's really not needed.
Anyway gtg but an ok ep.

Loved Gunn in season 1.
They then turned him whiter then white by the time he finished in season 5.
I would have liked, maybe, Allona to have lived a bit longer and being a bit of a menace.
David was another character I liked.
He obviously wanted to be involved with the group so I don't get why he wasn't written in more, I mean if this was real, Cordelia would have pressed for him to help the gang financially alot more.
He could have been the rich benefactor that upped them to a new level.
It would have been great had he joined again in season 5 and been quite shocked that Angel was with W&H because he had used his time and money to become a demon fighter(or at least leader of a team) himself.
Ohhh how about this for a story.
David hires Kate Lockley during the events of season 5 to find out why Angel has sided with the Devil and she makes the Vamp with Soul really question what he has done/is doing?
I think that would have been grrreat.

I agree with both statements but do you think a lot of the dialogue given to Gunn in seasons 1 and 2 is clichéd? To me a lot of it sounded like white people really trying to be 'hip', sorta Vanilla Ice-ish. I duno maybe I was just looking too much for it, but at times it seemed they were really trying to hard.

Oh absolutely. When i learned they were making Gunn a real character and developing him more, I thought that they'd really delve into that.
Sadly on Buffy and Angel, the one area that the writers have fallen is their ability to write credible black characters.
It's sad really.

I think they tried really hard to say something about stereotypes, like's Buffy's comment about Wood growing up in the hood but it never seemed natural, almost like it was staged to reach a quota or something.

Exactly.
But wanna know something interesting too. All this PC rubbish that people go on about makes me laugh. Stereotypes are born from actual people. In fact, I think it would have been a greater statement to have Wood grown from 'Da Hood' and become a respected School teacher.
Its just a shame that rather than confront the stereotypes by taking them, playing with them and making them interesting they try to steer clear because the TV Networks are too uncomfortable with it.

I agree and disagree about the stereotype thing. I do believe stereotypes are born out of reality but the problem I have with them is that if you rely one like 'getting out of the hood and making something of myslef' people begin to think there is no other reality but that one.
Buffy came into being because Joss wanted to break a stereotype, that women can hold their own and that Blondes aren't always airheads, and he did that spectatcularly but he fell short alot. I mean all that 'thats very British of you' crap used to get on my nerves! They used the word British to mean English like they were the same thing and half the stuff they said was 'British' just wasn't!

I watched this episode again last night, it's great, one of the best of Season 1. I love the contrast between rich and poor, and it's a great story. BUT, there's one thing that ALWAYS makes me laugh at the episode, the bit when Gunn's sister gets taken away by the vampires in the van and Gunn jumps on the moving van, it's just SO OBVIOUS that it's not Gunn, it's the funniest stunt double scene ever, they've got a fake bald head. OH MAN, that scene makes me laugh SO MUCH. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

It had been a while since I had seen the episode, but I like the fact that his beginnings were humble and that he grew to be such an important character to this universe. Those are the kinds of things that I look for. The episode was good as it got me anticipating the arrival of Gunn, which I already knew would happen, but it doesn't actually stand out as one of the best for me. I'm just a sucker for origin stories.
