"With Buffy incapacitated, Amy the witch has taken the opportunity to - get this - lay siege with an army of the undead. Willow takes her on in a witches' battle royal as hundreds of Slayers defend their Scottish citadel, but without the kiss of true love, Buffy will be out of commission indefinitely-with an unwelcome familiar face, and an image you won't soon forget."

Now this one you've gotta see. Tons of ideas to be discussed, and as usual nobody here yet to discuss it with. Am I the only one that goes to the comic store for a reserved issue on release day?
This one's easily the best so far . It demands an immediate reread. So much stuff in such a small space. So many wild ideas. I will say we guessed right on the 2 main questions, and when I say "we", I mean at least one of us here at B-boards on both questions.
Oh wait there was one mystery I don't think we guessed right. Two words - cinnamon buns.
There is something for Bangel's, Spuffy's, and Spangels.
And the last image - yuck.

Yeah, there's something for them in issue # 3 too, isn't there?
Oh and we have to invent a new one. Rexander, or Xanderenee.

Spuffiness I'll tell you at the bottom of this post. Major spoiler if you haven't read issue 3 yet. These will start to appear now that a few have read the story.
Did anyone see that one of the slayers was reading Fray?
No I missed that, and I went back to reread the story earlier specifically looking for that kind of stuff. Good find.
Here's some of the stuff I did notice though.
* Joss Whedon is in Buffy's dream. He's in one of the cubes.
* If it isn't Xander, Willow, or Dawn who kisses Buffy, the only other two we know by name who are in the room are Leah, and Rowena.
* Xander calls Willow Elphaba. Elphaba is a name given to the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of Oz.
* New Buffyism - Barflex - the reflex to barf.
* The sound effect when Dawn steps on Amy is SMLOOOSH. No significance here I just get a kick out of those things.
Spuffiness the last image is of Warren, and he looks pretty much the way Willow left him at the end of Season 6.

Here ya go...from Wikipedia.
The figure in the duster and red shirt is revealed to be Ethan Rayne, a former friend of Giles and chaos-worshipping sorceror. He reveals that they are trapped within Buffy's dreamspace, the conglomeration of all of a person's possible dreams. (To prove this, he reveals a scene showing Buffy in a nurse's uniform flanked by a naked Angel and Spike.) Ethan urges Buffy to escape so she can help the battle raging outside. Willow and Amy are locked in a magical duel, with Willow absorbing Amy's magics to "decode them". Willow then casts a spell that makes the undead army behave as if they were at a ball.
Amy retaliates with another magic spell, which Willow counters--her eyes and hair turning black in the process. While Amy taunts her, the gigantic-sized Dawn crushes Amy beneath her foot. Meanwhile, Ethan has led Buffy through her dreamspace to Amy's cage from her time as a rat. Buffy then sees triple x's (which she associates with either Vin Diesel or pornography), and Ethan begins speaking in riddles.
With Amy out of the way, Willow addresses Buffy's condition. She reveals that someone in the room is in love with her, even though that person may not have realized it. Willow then commands all the people in the room to close their eyes and asks the person in love with Buffy to come forward and kiss her. Buffy awakens, but the source of the kiss is not revealed.
Giles contacts a demon of the same breed as those killed in Part 1, asking for information about the symbol found on the bodies. The demon insists that the symbol is meaningless to his kind. Xander contacts Andrew in Italy to see if their station was attacked, and cautions him to be on alert. Xander then visits a wounded but recuperating Renee, reassuring her that she did her best in the battle.
Buffy and Willow examine Amy, now held in a binding spell. Buffy and Willow attempt to catch up -- Willow asks about Dawn's giant condition (asking Buffy if the cause was having sex with a Thricewise) and Buffy asks about Kennedy. Willow reveals that Kennedy died, but only a short-lived mystical death. Willow traces the source of Amy's power, finding that it came from something besides Amy herself. The tracing spell opens a portal which transports Willow to what appears to be the army base. Amy mentions that they had agreed to capture Buffy, but figures that Willow will serve as bait. A voice claims to be looking forward to killing Buffy, but that he is most excited about revenging himself on Willow. The figure emerges from the shadows and is revealed to be a skinless man: Warren Mears.

Everyone seems to have a theory on the triple X symbol, which appears to be important, and Ethan Rayne's cryptic comment about "being more antique Roman than Dane". Apparently it's a quote from Hamlet and has to do with wanting to commit suicide, or some such thing. That sounds better thought out than my theory. I saw the Xes, and thought X men, which is of course, silly, but there was an X Man character named Lorna Dane (Polaris) who was all the time finding herself a victim of one form or another of mind control.

Well one I would like to say wow, there was a lot of stuff going on in this one...and I don't get it lol. Maybe I'll have to see it more in order to get it lol. But the whole dreamscape thing...and I wonder who it was that kissed Buffy? Also Kennedy died? Did she stay dead or did Willow bring her back. I was a little lost on the mystical thing. Kennedy should stay dead and then they could bring back Tara, like how Joss was originally planning to do but scheduling conflicts and such happened. Also I would like to know how the hell is Warren alive? I mean first and foremost I doubt anybody could survive their skin being ripped off, I mean the shock alone would kill you. Also she burned his body up and second if he was never dead then how did the First appear as Warren? I'm confused...and I hate having a wait an entire month just for the next issue.

I was wondering about why Ethan has a 'connection' to Amy, allowing him access to Buffy's dreamscape. At the moment i'm leaning towards not trusting Ethan and that he and Amy are in cahoots or something....
I haven't read #3 yet but damn! I was so hoping the man with the red shirt and leahter jacket to be Spike! Don't give a crap about Ethan Rayne, bring back Angel & Spike!!!

Personally I think, reading spoilers on this one is really cheating yourself. Ethan is a great surprise, and there's 2, or 3 of those, maybe more. But...different strokes, and all that.
How could Amy bring Warren back? Did she? Or did she whisk Warren off at the moment of skinning?
How does Ethan get connected to all this? Only Joss knows of course, but the last time we saw him he was taken into custody, by a military body that looked a lot like the one responsible for what's happening in Season 8. Is he unhappy with them?
What about the Xander and Renee thing? Everybody was thinking Bander, now it looks like that's not the direction they're going. I like that myself. I like Renee. I like that feather earring, and those big brown eyes, and she seems really nice. Xander deserves a nice girl.
And who kissed Buffy? And what's that triple X symbol all about?

Darn, I read the Wiki posting. I guess no more sprouting "Cheese Man" theories being Amy's boyfriend. How do Amy and Warren know each other? Warren went to school with them only for a bit. And didn't Joss say he had to go back to season 4 to check on the 'boyfriend' story. I thought Warren turned up in season 5, and then a major role in Season 6?
Maybe Im just confused.
did he actually say it was the boyfriend story line that needed checking? i thought it was just a character that appeared in S4...we just all made the connection that the boyfriend was gonna be Adam.
Riley appeared in S4, so maybe he's gonna make an appearance. Anya became a regular in S4, so there's another possibilty (i really hope it's Anya!) also, Ethan disappeared in S4, there was Stinky Parker Man, Tara was introduced...just a few ideas.

05-03-2007, 01:47 PM
Mmm, maybe it's Kathy? She really hated Buffy. But she liked Willow (I guess...) And she has a short hair, so maybe she's actually a boy (for the boyfriend). I know, I'm being ridiculous.
By the way, Anya became a regular in season 5, it's the first time Emma's name was in the opening credits. She came back in season 4 though.

On that going back story. As I recall it was Joss telling Georges Jeanty to go back to a previous season to check out a character who would be making a reappearance. I got the impression it was more to see what the character looked like. At the time Georges didn't know his Buffy. He does now. As I recall it was Season 5, but I could be wrong about that. A previous suggestion, rumor, whatever had suggested a big bad would be reappearing, and people connected the 2 stories. That's why a lot of people were thinking it might be Adam. That and Amy's boyfriend was supposed to have high tech knowledge. That's where the Season 4 thing comes from.
Finally read it. As people before me have commented #3 was even better than the last two. The artwork is awesome (I don't read a lot of comics but I think the art really is beautiful. Characters need little bit improvement but otherwise the atmosephere is just right and colours are very vivid) and we got lots of acton out of this one. I'm still sad that the man in the coat wasn't Spike, but I knew there'd be little chance they introduced him so early on in the comics (although that dream sequence with Angel, Buffy & Spike, nice LOL). I won't say I understood all the dream stuff and also, isn't it possible that Warren is Amy's boyfriend??? Like, where did Amy transport Willow? To the army base? It would also explain the general's disgusted reaction? Or is Amy's boyfriend someone else and Amy has brought back Warren "just for the fun of it"?
I dont know if it was me, but Willow's dialogue was a bit off.
Willow: "Yeah, what'd she do? Bone a thricewise?"
Somehow Willow using the word 'bone' feels weird. The word doesn't offend me or anything, it just doesn't fit. Also, why did Willow call Xander by his last name? I know she was joking, but still, why not just 'Xander'?
Also, the true kiss thing wasn't as interesting as I thought it'd be. I mean, Willow didn't kiss Buffy (I think, she said that somone in the room was in love with her, did that include Willow?). So that means it was either Xander or one of the slayers. I can understand Xander but don't really care if ti was some anonymous slayer or sth. Where can they go with this story?

I'm extremely afraid to ask, but what do you mean by Spangel?
Ick. (If it's what I think it is.)
i think it'd be interesting if it was Willow. ok, so i haven't read this yet, it's on the way, but she said 'Someone in this room is in love with Buffy' why can't it be her? it would make sense. she got everyone to close their eyes, so no one's gonna know. it's be weird and unusual...and exactly something Joss would do.
i'm a little bummed that it wasn't Spike. i would even take Buffy's dream world version of Spike...hell, i would even take Angel over Ethan Rayne! lol, that i was NOT expecting.
and as the for Spangel thing...that'd be interesting to, but in a COMPLETELY different way!!

Great post. So Willow & Buffy, I don't know how to name the relationship, Wuffy or Billow? LOL Quite honestly, I'd like to see that happen but I'm pretty sure Buffy doesn't go for girls.
Edit:

It's (the dream sequence) basically Bangel, Spuffy & Spangel at the same time. Or were you asking what Spangel meant? (Spike & Angel together oviously)

Joss is boss, after all. ;)

Never said he wasn't.:) Willow has become too big of a badass, but I think that's okay too. Also, I thought that Willow wouldn't revert back to Dark Willow. I was hoping maybe she'd turn white like in 'Chosen'.

* If it isn't Xander, Willow, or Dawn who kisses Buffy, the only other two we know by name who are in the room are Leigh, and Rowena.
Amy might still have been in the room too, not that she's a likely suspect. The comic makes it seem like Xander is the probable kisser because his eye is open when people not in love with Buf were supposed to keep them (or it in his case) shut, and there's an "OKAY?" thought or speech bubble right there in front of his head right before Buf wakes up, and he's right there next to her when she does... The other way I could read it is that he was spying and the "OKAY?" was an expression of surprise or shock at who the kisser really was... Anyway, I counted 8 women (slayers?) in the room in addition to Buffy, Amy (if still there), Willow and Dawn.

I loved this little segment:
Xander: "Say it with me now: Fe Fi Fo...
Dawn: "...F%$#ING FUM.
that was just awesome
edit: also in the dream sequence when they're all flashing by, anyone else notice the one with Joyce sprawled on the couch dead. that was kinda sad to see. :(

I keep thinking back to Amy's intentions: Why cast a love spell, of all the possible spells, on Buffy? Why egg Xander on to try and break it by kissing Buffy?
It almost seems like she wanted to screw with their heads more than to kill Buffy (though she did seemingly try the latter with her dagger). Maybe she thought no one present loved Buffy and wanted to prove that to her, or maybe she knew that someone did (Xander?) and wanted to expose it, or maybe she wanted them to fetch Angel or Spike for some reason, or maybe she just wanted to make out with Buffy herself (obviously she's a little obsessed with Buffy)... Or maybe there was no deeper point to the choice of spell on her part and it was just something to move the plot forward while adding some romantic intrigue...
Thoughts?

I'm wondering how his body kept from decaying after all that time. Amy would have had to have found Warren right after Willow was done with him to keep him in that kind of shape for that amount of time. I mean if she has that kinda power, she could have at least given him some skin or something. *bleck*

YES there are Spoolers in this!
I think book 3 was my favorite cover so far.
I loved the little twist at the end, when Amy sucked Will into the portal & then we saw Warren. You would of thought Amy could of put his skin back on but yuck he did look freaky!! His line was a TOTAL classic Buff line, "You really got under my skin"!! When he didn't have any. I LOVED IT!! Totally Josh kind of hummer.
Did u guys see the Slayer in the background reading Fray????? It was when they were talking to Andrew. That was funny, leave it to Josh to throw something like that in it. LOL!!!! I almost missed it.
How about Andrew plying strip Poker with the Slayers!?!?!? I was like :cheering: I couldn't believe it. Maybe he won't die a virgin after all LOL!!!
gotta say, loved this issue. Warren's intro was good, even though i was a bit disappointed it was him. he looked gross, and i really wanna know how Amy managed to keep him alive for all that time. makes sense now though, why shw turned Willow into Warren in S7! lol
Ethan Rayne...hmm...am i the only one not totally convinced it's him? Buffy wonders how he can be part of her subconscious, as she spends zero time thinking about him, and he fobs her off with some excuse about being in her dream space, not her dream. the way he's dressed, not something we would normally see Ethan wearing. and the way he was speaking...he called her my love, pet, lamb, not something we ever heard him using.
ok, long story short, i think he's Spike, in some sorta disguise. but that's just me...hopeless Spuffy. BUT, it would explain why Spike's not in any of the little memory cube thingies, 'cause some part of her knows he's there. ok, i'm reaching, let's move on.
Hey, is that Cordelia in one of the little boxes? the one above Faith?
the Triple X thing has got me really confused. i have no idea what that's about.
LOVED that Dawn line...F%$#ing Fum, lmao!
THAT picture...hilarious!! still don't know what it means, other than Buffy's inability to make up her mind.
The person that loves Buffy...Xander and Willow were the closet ones to her when she woke up. When she asks later on who kissed her, Willow has a strange look on her face and chances the subject...Xander's looking at the floor. plus, he seems to be loved up with Renee...or getting there, anyway. i think it was Willow, but i'm probably alone on that.
i wish the Kennedy died thing wasn't just for a month. she'll probably pop up eventually.
the girl reading Fray was funny...wonder if she's looking for advice? or answers? lol
EDIT
one more thing...in the image with Buffy, Spike and Angel, did anyone else notice the two trains? one leading from Angel's side, the other from Spike's. they looked as if they were about to collide. wonder if that means anything...or if it's just dream stuff like the cherubs...

I dont know if it was me, but Willow's dialogue was a bit off.
Willow: "Yeah, what'd she do? Bone a thricewise?"
I'm with ya. All these lines are very Jossy, but some of them sound more like Xander lines than the actual utterers. I guess Willow was kind of in ironic/cool mode. I wanna hear some of that trademark halting Willow-speak. But it's all good.
The artwork seemed a little more ragged and rushed to me in this one, I dunno. Still really like Georges' stuff in general.
I love how dense this book is, in terms of the plotting, pacing. So much stuff happening so fast.
Wow. I missed a lot of things that you guys are bringin to my attention. Like the trains in the spike/angel/buffy picture and that one of the Slayers was reading Fray.
I'm trying to figure out what all the pictures are. when Buffy is having her "high school flash back." So far I know there's: The Master, Joyce dead on the couch, buffy xander and willow graduating, i think another of joyce, one that's either angel or jonathin (imo), giles readin the book with buffy, faith, joss, and two of dawn.
i think the kiss from true love came from the one slayer that always has the blue cap on, rowena? in the picture where willow says, "Buffy needs to be kissed by someone who's in love with her," Rowena (?) seems to look a lot more distressed than everyone else.

I think it was just basically symbolism for sex. Trains going into tunnels, volcano erupting, the stakes about to stake the "female" looking flowers. So, just dream stuff, maybe.

I just think it's a really dirty image, not that I think it's dirty but that the symbolism is meant to be, like the trains are going in both entrances at the same time the back and the front...
Loved no 3, A little dissapointed that Warren was the boyfriend. Also loved the Fe fi fo line, brillient!

Yeah but Andrew was playing Strip Poker but you could tell by the look on his face that he wasn't enjoying himself, which more then likely means he really is gay and since they're seemingly making the comic a lot more adult then the TV with Dawn using profanity, even if it is **** out and a lot of sex references and it being a "slow year" and Buffy being in a threesome with Spike and Angel. I'm also still wondering how Amy got to be so powerful now it appears she seems to be on Willow's level however she keeps mentioning how Willow is so powerful, but is Amy really such a light weight compared to Willow? Even when Willow temporarily went all black haired, which seems to be her strongest state Amy didn't seem to get affected, she was smiling and saying "Now you're starting to make this interesting. What else you got?"

In Waiting in the Wings (Angel season 3):
LORNE: Can't fight Kyrumption, cinnamon buns. It's fate. It's the stars. Kyrumption is..
ANGEL: Stop saying that. And stop calling me pastries.
mmmm, interesting....
(or, maybe Joss whedon who wrote that episode of angel just has a thing for cinnamon buns)

Hi guys :wave2:
Ok, just got my comic finally! And ok, is anyone else a little cranky that we don't know who kissed Buffy. I've been waiting for months to find out, and then no wait we're still not going to tell you. Grrr.
My original thoughts were Willow.. not sure why. I would prefer Xander, but I think he's into Renee... but I guess you can like/love more then one person. I'm not really warming to Renee as a love interest.. find it hard to relate to a character drawing I've seen very little of.
The Angel/Buffy/Spike image made me laugh! But owh! I want the actual boys to be in the comic... with like words.

Was that a Gamorrean Guard that was dead in that one scene before Buffy came to? It was either that or one of the demons marching towards Angel and the others in 'Not Fade Away'. Also, the dragon, in #2 she says she knows it and then #3 she says she misses her dragon. I don't have my book here with me to reference it, but I think it's in the same panel as the Gammorean Guard looking thingy. I'm curious as to what the signifigance is there.

But even before the Triple X, there was the weird place that looked like the insides of someone or something... and there was that dead pig demon thing? Wtf. :p
What happened to good TV?

hmm....pigs.....mr gordo.....and the mascot for sunnydale high when flutie was principal......i figure most've the stuff we see will have some relevance (many like 20 comics in, but you know joss) although there could be some cheese man esque things that dont actually have any relevance.
i've been thinking about the three X's...what if they're not X's? what if they're Roman numerials?
although, i have nio idea what the number 30 could mean, but i just thought i'd mention it.

Oh wouldn't that have been cool if the cheeseman was in Buffy's dream? lol.
I think some people are still confused about the dragon, but the dragon in Buffy's dream was Amy.. because the dialogue carries on to her with the knife. Plus Buffy says 'I know you'. At least that was my assumption.
The pig and the X's I'm still clueless about.. aren't the X's and the pig something to do with Amy? Because that's what Buffy and Ethan were looking for. And by the way what the heck was Ethan doing helping Buffy? Why does he care? Maybe he felt the magicks... Have we seen a pig demon on Buffy before? It does look kind of familiar.. but I think that's from me watching the Labyrinth.
Sorry I'm jumping all over the place.
Still wondering about who kissed Buffy.. if it was another slayer I'm not really interested because I don't know them. So that leaves Willow and Xander.. unless someone else was there we don't see. But ok, if Willow isn't in love with Buffy how does she know someone else in the room is? Is she reading their minds? Did Xander confide in her that he is? But if he is he says 'ok?' like he's not sure who's in love with her.. unless this is a mislead. Urgh ok, I guess we're not meant to know, I can't analyze this anymore :p

The demon pig is what I referred to as the Gamorrean Guard earlier. I don't know if there are any other Star Wars geeks that got that. The Gamorrean Guards were at the entrance to Jabba's palace. Andrew would have gotten it, darn it!
Anywho, I wondered if maybe it was just a coinkidink that it was in there or if was just a bit of foreshadowing for Warren. I don't have Angel S5 on dvd, but I think at the end of 'Not Fade Away' one of the demons in the alley resembled that guy. It also could have just been a bit of Dark Horse humor since they do the Star Wars comics also. I'm probably reading into it too much. I dunno.

I thought it was awesome, although I did get a little bit confused with the dream sequence, so much going on there. It was exciting to see Willow in action again! and Im liking the whole Xander/Renne thing she seems cool.
About the ending, I'm not sure Im happy about it, Joss is definetely gonna hve to clear things up in the next issue which is meant to close the arc (BTW its out tomorrow!! call your comic shops now and reserve a copy!) Oh yeah my fav bit was the 'memories' panel during the dream sequence (High school, Faith, Joyce, Angel, the last scene from Chosen, the vampyr book, and Glory was that Glory holding the mirror?? so cool) anyways can't wait for tomorrow, will be discussing the next issue as soon as I get my hands on it!

haha. This one was by far better then the 1st and second!!
Ethan Rane being the one calling her love and then her saying she was goin to barf :lmao:
The scene where spike/Angel/Buffy are in a three way lol is weird, sick, hilarious, and awesome!
I loved the 2 page Willow/Amy art alot. Very good art in this one. I
loved in the dreamspace that we see Faith and ... JOSS WHEDON on one of the little frames. Very very cool.
Hahahahaha Fe Fi Fo and then Dawn goes Fu#$ing Fum and steps on Amy :lmao:
:lmao: Andrew playing strip poker with the other girls hahahaha!!! only thing I didn't like was the ending ^_^
Only thing funnier than him being in a room full of fit, stripping Slayers is that hes completely bored and uninterested, and people still think hes straight haha
I think even Mal from Firefly is visible in the Dreamspace cubes.

I finally got the comics!
I am as stumped as you guys are on the who kissed Buffy thing. I really wanna know, darn it!
I'm with either Xander or Willow. Xander makes more sense, especially given Buffy's dream and his history of crushing on her (plus their chemistry in season 7), but... Willow was the one who suggested the close-your-eyes thing. The thing is, Willow in love with Buffy? I don't know... that seems sort of like "where did that come from?" I mean, they've been friends for ages, and there was nary a whisper of even a crush or physical attraction. Willow's shown more sexual interest in Dawn than in Buffy!

But I don't think Xander would have been shy about it - he never was before. It's got to be one of the girls.

Could the XXX thing mean the 30th line of Hamlet?

I have no idea about the x's. I tried to think back in the show and see if it was connected or brought up but I went blank.
But could you post the line please?? :) I'd like to read it.

Well, it's Claudius, and the line is "That he, as ’twere by accident, may here" but the whole speech is:
For we have closely sent for Hamlet hither,
That he, as ’twere by accident, may here
Affront Ophelia.
Her father and myself, lawful espials,
Will so bestow ourselves that, seeing, unseen,
We may of their encounter frankly judge
And gather by him, as he is behaved,
If ’t be th’ affliction of his
