Buffy first died in season 1 where she drowned. Then in season six when she jumped from the tower to the portal.
But did she die when she got shot. We see that in the hospital the heart moniter goes flat write before willow. Does that count as the third time she has dies or is it only two?

i don't really count the heart monitor one when willow saved her.. cause xander was saying "she's gonna die" and willow says "no she isn't".. so i saw it as willow preventing her death. and yeah you still have brain activity for what like 4 minutes from the time your heart stops?

I guess most people count the flatline as Buffy dying a third time. Basically it's up to you I guess?
(Then again, if you are one of those who believe that the slayer line went through Buffy again – after she was brought back in the beginning of season 6 – this can in theory mean a new slayer should have be called when she flatlined...)

I personally don't count the flatline as her dieing. Willow couldn't revive the dead as we saw with Tara. It was a simple as removing the bullet and stopping the bleeding which brought Buffy back to conciousness. But even so, I'm one that believes the Slayer line was running through Faith and not Buffy so I guess we can't be 100% positive.
Also if we're counting alternate-universes..she also died in The Wish.

Buffy only died twice. When the heart monitor alarm sounded, all the machines in the room were going crazy due to Willow's energy messing with them.

It's only twice as Xander states in season 7, that time in the hospital isn't counted. Her heart stopped but they could've revived her, you know.

yea i see what ur saying, but if thats why that time doesnt count then wouldnt the first one not count either, she was revived too.

What was it Xander said in the hospital in reference to Buffy dying?.
He didn't know about her dying in the Wish, does that mean it isn't included ?.
eponinethen put it that a new slayer should have been called when Buffy flatlined. WHY? Buffy was a vampire slayer but she wasn't the chosen one.
When she is said to have died in Prophecy, Kendra was called to be the chosen one. When Kendra died Faith became the chosen one. So if Buffy did flatline another wouldn't have been called.

What Illyrian said. Buffy's death no longer called another Slayer after her temporary death in Prophecy Girl because then lived on in Kendra and then Faith. It's why none was called after the events of The Gift.
As for the flatline in season 6 I do personally count that as another death even if the show later on doesn't. I mean after Willow saves her, Xander says something like 'You've got to stop this dying thing. It's funny once, maybe twice...'
Oh, I had never thought of that before, but I don't think so. I mean, someone does not die the minute the heart stops. Willow couldn't revive the dead. Buffy was really about to die but Willow removed the bullet -a.k.a. the "so tiny piece of metal"- and used her healing powers to sutture back the tissues, stop the bleeding and voilą! Buffy's back to consciousness again. "That amazing Rosenberg"...
Anyway, thanks for the explanation of why noone was called after Buffy's death in "The Gift", I always wondered.
