I didn't used to pay much attention to these OMWF singalongs, but you just keep hearing about them. They won't go away. Everytime you turn around there's another one in another city. I think some places have recurring events.

Here's a little blurb on one of them.

In the same vein as "Rocky Horror Picture Show," audience participation is a must. The lyrics will appear as captions on the screen, the waving of cellphones during mellower songs is encouraged, and goodie bags complete with finger puppets and bubbles will be distributed to enhance the viewing and warbling experience.

"It should be fun for the 'Buffy' fans and entertaining for everyone else," Thornton said with a laugh

Has anyone ever, actually been to one of these things?

Wow, they've got a blog for everything these days, don't they.

I heard about the touring one in my town, after the fact.

yup. i've been to about... umm... ::counts fingers:: i think about 6 or 7 Buffy Singalongs. maybe 8... i can't keep track anymore. if anyone ever has the opportunity to go to one of these, it's one of the greatest experiences you will ever have! i'm from austin TX, so they're always having a buffy singalong at the drafthouse every other month or every couple months or so. these singalong are really hitting a stride-- they just keep expanding into more and more cities.

what they do (i'll talk about what happens from my own experience) is it's set in this theatre room like for movie screenings, so it's on a huge ass screen. you get all sorts of props (fake vampy teeth, bubbles, lighters, poppers, sometimes underwear, etc.) that are used for specific songs in OMWF. they do a warm-up episode of buffy (that is either pre-picked, or the audience can write in which episode they want to see and the MC draws out of a hat). after that OMWF comes on, the lyrics are on the screen for those who don't know all of them, and you SING! during anya & xander's duet everybody gets up and dances in the aisles, it's so much fun. bubbles are blown during tara's song; lighters are held up at the end of 'walk through the fire' when the fire truck goes by. it's just an awesome time all around!!

i actually went to the 10yr buffy anniversary special event this past march, and it was an entire night of buffy, where an episode was shown from every season (if anybody wants to know the line-up that was shown that i saw, just ask. i wrote 'em down to remember), plus OMWF. basically, everybody was watching buffy for like 10 hours. it was so much fun!

but yeah, these singalongs are just an amazing time!! and they're for all ages, and all sorts of people show up. oh, and i almost forgot... people are always dressing up in buffy costumes for these things, so theres always a costume contest for the best one (i did it once, hehe. i dressed up as willow from some season 6 episode, don't remember which one...)

Edit:

OH! how could i forget!?! one of the funnest things people can do during the singalongs... dawn bashing!! whenever dawn comes on screen or starts singing or does her dance at the bronze, people scream out at her (most yell obscenities, which is kinda frowned upon, but people still do it). it's really alot of fun! i think people enjoy that most about the singalongs... (i wonder why? hehe)

That does sound like fun. How are the crowds? Are they fading off from when you first started going?

Edit

I got curious if anybody films these things so I did a YouTube search. HERE's (http://youtube.com/results?search_query=buffy+singalong&search=Search) the page. I'm checking them out right now.

actually no. the crowds just keep growing. alot of the time the singalongs sell out of tickets for the shows. it almost happened to me once, but some openings occurred and i got tickets (i was so relieved)

I've been to one of these and they are one of the best Buffy experiences you can have with a group of people that love the show almost as much as you! I also liked the audience participation. We did everything we were supposed to do! (I especially loved blowing the bubbles! They were everywhere! And the cell phone part was hilarious.) I hope they come back to Chicago, I would love to go again! :)

There's one tonight (Friday, Aug. 3) in Roanoke, VA. Apparently I haven't been around long enough to post the link to the official site, but it's "Buffy Sings Roanoke" dot com if anyone is interested. I'm there! :cheering:

That sounds SO awesome. The only Buffy singalong Ive been to is when I met up with Epo and Joamna in Sweden and we watched OMWF and they sang lol! I wonder if they'd have these things in Sydney. I'd go just to watch Buffy on a huge ass screen!

Blondie Bear

Well, the singalong was a lot of fun, but I think the crowd was (somehow) just all wrong for it. The whole thing is covered in my blog, if anyone's really that interested (link in my signature).

The "Minions" kept trying to get people to get up and "dance crazy" or headbang, but it was very dark in the theater and hard to see their cues. Except the "Shut UP, Dawn!" sign, because the person holding that was tall enough to get it into the light from the projector. I hope the Minions don't decide never to do it around here again due to the lack of enthusiasm; I think people just hadn't shaken off their inhibitions. I personally would love to do it again with a group of people who are extreme Buffy nerds and don't care who knows it.

nerd4hire
08-04-2007, 12:27 PM
That makes sense what you say. A lot would depend on the audience you saw it with, and how well the minions did their job. At YouTube I was impressed at how the New York guys seemed to be getting everyone into it, and the Israel minions were fun to watch.

And * ha * the lady next to you coveted the Angel action figure you won. I've got stories like that. I know it happens.

And it wasn't a healthy, Anya-with-Buffy's-dress "I wish it were mine!" kind of coveting. It was a hardcore "I deserve this more than you" kind of coveting. Really annoying. :mad39:

I would go, of course, but I don't know if they even come this way..TN or anywhere around. I def do not mind driving. I am going to have to look into it further. Oh and how much does it cost per ticket? I am just curious.

TeenageFBI

Tickets in my town were $12 each. I don't know if this varies depending on theater or not but I would imagine they generally fall around this price.

BuffBuff
08-06-2007, 01:15 AM
yeah, the tickets typically fall into that price range. i think the price for the shows where i am is about $10 or so. (sometimes $8, but i could be making that up. i dont remember) so it's actually a good price for an awesome show! totally worth it!

Blondie Bear

Ours here in VA were $10.

AHHHHHHHHHHHH! That's me screaming with excitment. I get to go Sept 8 in Georgia. It's only a few hours away and for Buffy I would do anything. So that's nothing. Tickets aren't on sale yet so I will check back every day. I am going to do a happy dance in a minute. Lol.

I feel bad for you, Blondie Bear, because I've been in that situation where people are angry for some reason and then it ruins your day. I liked your review, though! And it really does matter who you see it with and how the crowd reacts to all the things they do. (I'm glad she didn't steal your action figure, which is actually one of the only ones I don't have...so...if you could just hand it over... :) )

I loved the audience I was with because they all seemed pumped and ready to party! (It might have been the alcohol before the sing-a-long, though...I'm totally kidding!) And we didn't watch any other episodes besides OMWF. However, we did do this one thing where the guy who was in control of the event would play Buffy clips and then have people act them out as if they were on the show. It was hilarious! :lmao: But some people complained that it was a joke on Joss's work. (I thought it was funny...)

We also watched some Buffy music videos. One of them was pretty funny, too. It was called "Coin Operated Boy" by the Dredson Dolls(?) and it was about how Riley was like a coin operated boy to Buffy. (I liked the song and kept singing it where ever I went...although, when I heard what the song meant...I had to stop singing it...)

They also had trivia questions. We didn't get action figures like Blondie Bear did, though. I think they gave us candy instead...*shrugs shoulders*...And I got a kazoo (is that how you spell it?), bubbles, a party popper, fangs, a little finger monster and we too had to yell "Shut up Dawn!" at the appropiate times.

Anyways, that's what we all had to do in Chicago. (And I think the tickets were $8-$10.)

TabulaRasa
08-08-2007, 01:29 PM
Would you all mind sharing what kind of trivia questions they asked?

Blondie Bear
08-08-2007, 08:33 PM
That's what I get for being in a small city. The crowd wasn't very big or pumped. I hope next time only real Buffy-philes will be there. If there is a next time.

Trivia questions I remember:
What were Mayor Wilkins' last words before the library blew up?
What is Giles' nickname?
Put these people in the order they died: Buffy, Buffy, Joyce, Jenny, Kendra
Put these villians in order: the Master, Glory, Adam, the First
What is Umad?

There were quite a few more, but I'm blanking out right now.

I attended a singalong last night and it was a lot of fun. My experience sounds pretty similar to Jone's. The only full episode we watched was OMWF. The pre-show included a MTV news feature on the Buffy Singalongs, the Buffy-oke, a video tribute to Joyce and the trivia.

Some of the trivia questions at our event were:
What was Xander's middle name?
What was Allyson Hannigan's first on screen role?
What was Anthony Stewart Head famous for before Buffy?
How many times was Giles knocked out in the series?

And I forget the rest. There were no prizes but it was a lot of fun. There was a very cute girl dressed up as little red riding hood Buffy which was a nice treat. I thought the shouting at Dawn got a old pretty quickly. Any time she opened her mouth she was greeted with a barrage of shouts from the audience.

Overall it was a really fun night. It was nice to be in the same room with so many people who share the same passion for the series.

Put these villians in order: the Master, Glory, Adam, the First

What was the answer to this one?
Master, Adam, Glory and the First
or
Master, First, Adam and Glory?

Since the first was in season 3?

nerd4hire
08-11-2007, 12:17 PM
Yeah, and on how many times has Giles been knocked out, would the mass blackout in Tabula Rasa count? In fact that's a tough one. Who'd know that off the top of their head? I'd guess 6. What's the answer?

They wanted the First last--they meant as the Big Bad of the season.

dawn-bashing IS fun, but after a while when people just keep yelling out the same things at her, like 'shut-up dawn!' or 'you suck!'... it does get pretty old. im like, geez, get some new material would ya...

I don't remember the exact answer but I think it was around 13 or 15. They did count the blackout from Tabula Rasa but it didn't seem like a real scientific study of how many times he'd been knocked out by any means.

Yeah I think that was probably my problem with it. It's not that I minded people yelling at Dawn, it was just hearing the same line over and over again wasn't particularly original. It was more obnoxious that anything.

I cannot wait for the sing a-long in Nashville in November. Tickets have not gone on sale just yet but I am sure they will soon. If you could see me, well I am sitting down so never mind. I was going to lie to you and tell you I was jumping up and down, but I truly am in my mind.

WEll i was surprised here, my friend and i showed up at 11 and the line was a quarter of the way down the block. By the time we were being let in, we took up half (maybe more) of a manhattan block. and that is LONG let me tell you.

Yes the Uncoolkids rock, i had some pictures but its on a camera that has been left as my brother's friend's house so, no pics to show you guys right now. :(

This month they are having a special halloween one here in NYC and if you come dressed up (i dont know if you have to be a character of if you can be dressed, period) you can go to a pre-party with the uncoolkids and everything (apparently they will even be painting evil insignias on the floor to set the mood lol). i wanna go! I'm gonna see if i can bring another fellow fan friend of mine.

Thanks LittleMiss, I wasn't sure what time to head out. Nashville is about an hour away from me and I have pets to consider. My cat can take care of himself but my two dogs...Anya being one of them, I didn't want to leave them for too long. But then again it's at night so they should be fine. They will prob just sleep. I think I will get there around 9ish. Hopefully that's not too late.

well i guess they killed my other thread, but they were just stopped by Fox who doesn't want buffy or any of it's other properties shown in theaters. but they are trying to bring it back. they have cancelled and are refunding any upcoming shows.

I am so angry it got cancelled! I got to go to the Dallas show before they stopped them, and it was sooo much fun! We left here about 8:00, got there at about 11:15 and the line was already so long. I didn't even get home till 5:30 the next morning. When they start the shows up again (and they have to or I shall throw my shoe at a fox exec for being stupid) my sister and I are going to try to get them to come here...Anyone who has the chance to go to one after they start up again should, it is SO much fun!

By the way, if anyone was there and heard the girls yelling 'we drove from Oklahoma!' in an attempt to get picked to go up on stage...that was us!

Here's what I don't understand about all this. Fox says they canceled the singalongs, because the SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) wanted to get pieced off. Why can't they just charge an extra 2 bucks a ticket for SAG?

They do the Buffy sing-along at some cons - Penguicon being the one I've seen it at. As far as I know with Fox exercising their litegious muscle, Penguicon folks talked about canceling it, but then decided to continue. I am looking forward to seeing it again.
