I guess I kind of agree. Doyle is my favorite character pretty much, and I remember when I first started watching Angel, he had already died so I didn't know who he was, I just knew that Wesley was there and the first time I got the first season and saw him in the first episode I was like, "Oh, who is this guy? Oh he better not die." And then when he did die, I was just like, "Ah come on, seriously?" and then I cried. I still cry at that scene too. I'm glad that since he had to go, he got a hero's death at least, unlike Glenn Quinn in real life. =(

I wasn't a huge fan of Doyle the first time around because I started watching it but was aware Wesley would join, so I was excited as I liked Wesley.
However after I bought season 1 on DVD and rewatched it, I began to appreciate him more.
I never got distressed by his death though because I knew it was a good death (heroic)

My friend says the first time she saw Hero, she got so mad that she just threw the remote on the floor. =O But now, every year on Glenn's real death day, we get together and watch Hero.

I am sad for Glenn in real life tho. Very sad.

This was one of Doyle's best episodes. Not surprising since it focused around him ^_^ Plus learning more about Doyle is always great.
A third grade teacher, not knowing he was a demon til it actually happened. Very informative episode. It delivered it greatly.
Plus it had an AMAZING story behind everything we learned. The whole "eating of the first husbands brains"
And the family acting as if it was okay.. yet they weren't comfortable with charades :lmao:
lol and the demon apologizing for saying he didn't want to eat Doyle's brains was hilarious.
Demon Doyle looks great, and Cordy going all bashing over his head and still not realizing Doyle is a demon is again funny as hell!
haha I loved this episode. But It can't compare to Hero, Doyle's greatest episode!
Hero
This was by far the saddest episode of Angel, It was by far sadder then the previous episode "I will Remember you" I know you all probably disagree but for me it was.
Watching this episode was so fun, I knew what was going to happen and tried not to think about but, every line about sacrifices, and doing the right thing, foreshadowing everything.
It was so sad, I couldn't even help myself from tearing up. Seeing Doyle sacrifice himself to save so many others. This line did it for me I couldn't hold back after he said it
Doyle: The good fight, yeah? You never know until you've been tested. I get that now.
[Doyle punches Angel off of the balcony and turns to kiss Cordelia]
Doyle: Too bad we'll never know
[changes to his demon face]
Doyle: if this is a face you could learn to love.
Angel: Doyle. Doyle. Doyle! Doyle! No!
[Doyle jumps onto machine]
Angel: [shouting] Doyle! No!
It was horrifically sad I couldn't contain myself ::crying2:::crying2: lol idk what that says about me lol!
Then you here the commercial Cordelia was shooting of Doyle, and then it gets even sadder
Doyle: When the chips are down, and you're at the end of your rope you need someone that you can count on.
And that's what you'll find here - someone who'll go all the way, who'll protect you no matter what.
So don't lose hope. Come on over to our offices and you'll see that there's still heroes in this world.

heh, my loss, but it'll probably be another year before I see it again, the longer in between the so much more beautiful this episode is.

I think watching Hero now, it hold so much more emotion for the viewer, so much more poignant. It's just too sad.
Doyle as a character, I loved him. He was cute and kind but strong, stronger than he even knew and I love what he brought out of Angel and Cordy. I could have done without him being played up as a bum drunk, that Irish stereotype got old about 150 years ago.

I loooooved Doyle! He was just plain cool.
I am torn between these two episodes. I think I like Bachelor Party best because we get to see so much of his really interesting backstory. Plus, you know, those demons are just too funny.
But you have a point about Hero, too. It's hard to top self-sacrifice as a character's shiniest moment.

It's never a lot of fun to watch a character you've gotten to know and like on a show die, and I can understand that, though I wasn't a fan of Angel and never saw the earlier seasons until the DVD's came out, but just think how different the show would have been if Wesley had never been there. I think he was one of the strongest supporting characters on either series, especially in the later season when he was no longer so prim and proper. Some folks just look better a little bit grubby (at least, that's what I keep telling Lady Avenger)

I personally found Hero much, much sadder than You're Welcome. Not that I wasn't upset by Cordy's death, because I really thought she was great, and brought so much to the show.
Maybe being Doyle had been one of only 3 main characters, and then he died, whereas Cordy hadn't been in the whole season before You're Welcome.
Anyway, I have ambivalent feelings towards watching Hero, because it makes me so happy that he dies a heroic death, but also so sad because Doyle was such an amazing guy, and my favourite character at the time :(

I might be the only person who wasn't saddened by You're Welcome. I was sad to see Cordy go, but over all? She lived a happy life.
I never felt that close to Doyle, either, so I was just "meh." towards his death the first couple of times I watched it. The third time, though, I cried. It was so beautiful that someone in this world still has honour (yes, I know he's fictional and that I'm a loser :P).
< off topic >
< off topic >
The saddest moment in the series for me was when Wesley died. I felt that Wesley, out of all of them, got the shortest end of the stick (haven't seen S3 & S4, so couldn't say one way or another on Connor). I just bawled over Wesley. He grew up being abused by his dad, trying to make his dad proud. Became a member of the Watcher's Council, only to be fired (and felt like he failed for being fired). He joined up with Angel, and he finally had friends. But he was manipulated into betraying Angel, and I don't think Angel ever completely forgave Wes for that. And I'm pretty sure Wes knew that Angel didn't forgive him. And Wes never even had Friend. Well, he had her for all of what? 5 hours? Yeah, that's real great.
So yeah, that's why I felt that Wes' death was the saddest
< /off topic >
Back on topic, I remember when Cordelia mentioned that Doyle was like a brother to Angel. I was all "...Huh? :s" Because I honestly can't remember Angel saying more than 5 words to Doyle throughout Doyle's involvement in the series. I will remember you! I remember that. Doyle was the one Angel confided in, then. But other than that, I just don't see Angel thinking of Doyle as a brother. I can see Angel thinking of Doyle as a friend, someone to go to a sports bar with (if Angel still did that sort of thing), but I can't see Angel thinking of Doyle as a brother.
Maybe Angel saw Doyle as a younger version of himself, though? I dunno. I just keep thinking of when Doyle's all 'Blah blah Cordy blah blah." and Angel's all "You think she's a hottie." And Doyle's all "Well, she's a stiffiner, all right. You can't deny that."
I just...I never felt close to Doyle. I think his death was too soon into the series for me to become emotionally invested in him.

I think Joss had planned it that way from the beginning. But if he didn't then I am pissed! But I think he always had it planned.
Yeah, he had planned to do it with Eric on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (well, he did, theoretically. He had just wanted to have Eric in the main credits though, to catch people out), but he couldn't afford it. This was his second chance to pull a big plot twist.

Doyle was great! He always seemed to be the optimist, which pissed Angel off so much, but if he wasn't there Angel probably wouldn't have even tried to fight the good fight. I was extremely pissed when he died, but he did go out in style. Wesley and Doyle would've been great for the rest of the season, I think he should have hung around a little while longer. Here's a stumper for ya, If Doyle didn't die in "Hero" how much longer do you think he would be around?

As much as I loved Doyle in season 1 (and was somewhat annoyed they killed off a character that made me laugh so much... there wasn't much else that made me laugh in season 1), I don't think he'd have stayed much longer if they hadn't have killed him off. Forgetting the fact that Quinn died in real life, I don't think he'd have lasted more than maybe end of season 1. The character was funny and sweet and stuff, but I didnt get the feeling of longevity in the character that you get with Wesley for example... and I think the two of them in Angel together wouldn't have meshed so well.
[P.S. The best Doyle moment has to be 'our rats are low,' in the ad for AI.]

I've only watched the first season of Angel, but Doyle was my favourite character in it. He was so funny and an optimist. A brilliant character, I think. I was very upset when he died. Hero and Bachelor Party were both great episodes, but I think Hero was best. It was so sad, but I'm pleased that he at least died a hero.

He did it again later with Tara on Buffy, too. Put her in the opening credits the same episode he killed her off.

I think Doyle was a fun character. He made Angel a little more light hearted, like the Spike of Angel. I don't think that Joss ever equally replaced Doyle during the series, it seemed that after him, no one had that lighthearted happy go lucky personality that Doyle had. Lorne was close to it, but even he didn't replace Doyle.

Well, I know on one of the commentary tracks Josh was saying how they had to rewrite his lines and bring him back in to overdub because his accent was so thick it was hard to understand him.
Not that that was the reason he was written off the show but I am sure that it could have become problematic throughout the years.

Well put. I LOVE Wesley but I don't see why his character couldn't have been on the show at the same time as Doyle's because they're pretty different. (I want to have my cake and eat it too).
As much as I love Wesley as a character and although I think he had excellant chemistry with the many other characters I don't think Angel/Cordelia/Wesley had as much chemistry as Angel/Cordelia/Doyle. It would almost be like if you took Willow or Xander out of the original mix of Buffy. It's just not the same, and Wesley grew so far removed from the other members of the group that they had even less chemistry towards the last two seasons. I think Doyle had a lot of unused potential and I don't think any character ever played off of Cordelia (sorry Cangels) as well as Doyle.
Doyle is definitely what got me hooked on the show, and one of the best (if most shortlived) characters in the Buffyverse. R.I.P. Glenn Quinn.

Boy, it looks like I'm the only freako who didn't adore Doyle. Oh well.
Partly because he wasn't around that long, but partly because he always feels like (keep in mind, I watched Angel first so I didn't think this exact thing the first time around) he was a weird, S1 Xander mixed with an early S4 Xander, with weird visions thrown in that made him somewhat crucial and not able to actually BE a bumbling idiot all the time.
It always seems rather strained in my mind.
I'm sure I would have liked him more had he been around longer, but he just wasn't.
I did LIKE him, but I see where they really needed Wesley and all his "watcher knowledge" more than vision guy with a gambling problem and in the midst of an identity crisis.
What I know I would have liked a LOT better is Wes and Doyle having some screen time together. Maybe if they had kept them around and he died in Pylea or in "That Old Gang Of Mine". Ah, wishes!

No you're not. I never got into Doyle very much either. After watching the series for the 3rd time, I grew to appreciate him more. He gave the series a real freshness when it needed it, and I liked his constant attempts to win Cordelia. However, his gambling problems and self-esteem about being part demon never resonated with me.
I like the way he went out though (not the episode in particular... one of my least favorites actually). Making him a hero that died fighting the good fight gave Angel's quest for redemption a little more heart and soul... and that was played on beautifully in season 5 during "Your Welcome" when they replayed the commercial Cordy and he did.

Hey all.
I'm currently re-watching Angel and yesterday I got to watch Hero, and was, like a few others saddened by the demise of Doyle.
It's quite sad to find out by reading this thread that Glenn had actually died too - more than a year after being written out.
I can't really say I liked or disliked the character as Doyle wasn't in the show long enough for me to really make my mind up about him. Sure he had his good points, but he had bad points too - who doesn't? But normally on a show like Buffy or Angel I tend to make my mind up about the characters at the end of the each season - and sometimes my point of view changes about those that survive the season - Dawn and Anya for example, I went from 'severe dislike' of both to 'can't see the show without them' during s6 -- yeah I know, before you start... s6...
Anyway - the point of this post - Doyle ...
Here's a link to some interesting facts that people might not have known about Glenn Quinn.

Just finished "Hero" for the first time. Wow, I've cried two epis in a row. I don't think that ever happened with BtvS.
I absolutely loved Glenn Quinn as Mark Healy, but wow, I had no idea he was Irish in real life.
Doyle is a huge part of why I've enjoyed AtS so far, and am surprised Joss took him out so early.
Please don't shoot me, but I didn't particularly adore Wesley on Buffy. I'm hoping it's a different case in AtS.
side note: Can someone PLEASE konk me? I ruined most of BtvS for myself with spoilers and am quickly going down the same road with AtS. I don't mean to--it just happens. Also, it seems like EVERYONE dies on this series (I think I know of at least 5)--wait, don't answer that! :Þ

Just bought season one a few days ago and that was the first time I've cried watching a show in a long time. And it wasn't so much the character, but what it did to Angel and Cordy. That broke my heart, however, it did warm my heart the way he went out and I like to think about it like this: if it wasn't for him making that huge sacrifice, then Angel and Cordy would've died and the series would be over.
Yeah, I know there's ways around that, but that my cup half full approach. :)

I'm rewatching Season 1 of Angel, and it still kind if suprises me how much Doyle's death gets to me. :( I LOVED the character, and thought Glenn Quinn was a great addition to the cast. And especially now, knowing what happened to him in real life, it makes me very sad because I thought he was so talented.
I was so sad when Doyle died, and couldn't believe Joss would kill off one of the principals of the show, but I was very happy and excited that they brought Alexis in to fill the void. I still miss Doyle though, and wish he could have come back some way other than flashbacks or tricks of a demon, you know?

I liked Doyle, but in a way I find it fits the story, where Joss Wheedon broke all the rules of film and theatre and it's a very brave move for a new show to kill off one of its main characters after only half of the first season. In a way I like it, and it gives the story interesting opportunities, which Buffy could never have I think. Eventhough I thought it sad at the time, when I watched it. He was a great character and long live the Irish. Jippie.

I don't think it's alright to kill a character just to make a "brave" move. I understand that characters need to die sometimes to advance the story or simply because they've served their purpose and are now disposable. I always just felt he had so much more potential, and you should at least use a good character up before you spit them out, if you ask me.

I feel cheated in someway that He was stolen from me, almost like I never knew him well enough but enough to miss him. He was funny , good looking and going to get the girl.
A true hero story when you thinking your winning then you must sacrafice your live for others. Becoming a true Hero remembered for one special act of selflessness . Always good to see the underdog become a Hero x

First of all, I absolutely adore Wesley (well, more than adore), Rogue Demon Hunter that he is. ;)
However, I did very much love Doyle. Doyle was so wonderful, and sweet, and poignant... and then he died. I have this thing against Joss and killing off characters that I liked. (You should have seen me sobbing after Becoming II... no, wait, you shouldn't have) I have this love/hate relationship with the man, and I think that I most definitely agree with Alan Tudyk's description of him. ;)
Doyle did, though, get a good, heroic death. Much better than Angel's... his wasn't heroic at all (just heart-breaking). But what did satisfy me about the whole his dying, was that we got to see a kiss between Doyle and Cordy before they went. (Even if it is for her to get the visions, but still... I love Nine and Rose's kiss in Dr. Who, so...)
It was a good, heroic death, as I said. But it was also horrid... killing off a character before a full season was even over. So I hate Joss, love Doyle, but I love Wesley as his replacement. :)

Oh yes, I certainly agree he got a death that was moving and well-fitted for the character...I woulda been very angry if they'd killed a core character that early in the show the way they killed Tara, for instance...the fact it was a noble, heroic death certainly makes it an easier pill to swallow.
