Did anyone ever think of where the Mayor got his name? Well, I have a theory. In Charles Dickens' novel A Christmas Carol Scrooge's childhood friend was Dick Wilkins. Sound familiar? Also, Joss has admitted numerous time that he in a HUGE Dickens fan. Thats just my theory.

Aw man, I thought this was a thread about the idea of The Mayor being like Scrooge where ghosts would come and convince him he didn't really want to ruin graduation. XD

I thought you were going to say that Harry Groener was going to be in a play or musical.

Anyhoo, thats an interesting tidbit of info.

Yuppers, if you read Joss Whedon: The Geuinious Behind Buffy he mentions that his favorite writer was Dickens because of the eposodic nature of his works and thats why he plans things out on his shows so much. So, maybe thats a little bit of proof.

This thread is so totally yester but just read it and the semi-theory intrigued me. It's a really interesting look at how Mayor Wilkins came to have his name.
Plus in Graduation Buffy calls him Dick. This was most likely for a much cruder reason but still no such as a coincidence right? (Or leprechauns)

Look at Amends. See any resembalences to A Christmas Carol there? Joss has admitted to that episode being a hybrid of that and the movie It's A Wonderful Life. Makes me wonder if he was reading any Dickens at the time of writing...
