didn't see a thread about this, but if i've been stupid and missed it, please delete.

Sarah Michelle Gellar has offically changed her name to 'Prinze' as a fifth wedding anniversary gift to husband Freddie.

i think it's kinda sweet...

Aww, that's really sweet. Sounds strange to my ears, hehe, but it's sweet. I think them two are a great couple- cute together and they dont seem to have been effected relationship wise by the Hollywood scene which is always nice to see

Yeah, I don't really like the name-change either :/

I don't think I'll ever get used to it. I have a hard time dealing with celebrity name changes, I'm still calling Michelle DaRosa from Straylight Run "Michelle Nolan."
I think it's a sweet gesture, but you just know that her IMDB page is probably never going to change and "Sarah Michelle Prinze" is only going to be under "Also credited as:" for her.
But still, good for her!

Changing your name is a pain. I did it when I got married, and I kind of wish I didn't. I wish Sarah luck dealing with all the unexpected little things that pop up... like cashing savings bonds or traveling with a passport that's still under her maiden name.

That said, I do think it's a sweet gesture. I know it means a lot to my hubby. My parents are spending X-mas with us. They're shipping gifts ahead of time to me under my maiden name - hyphen - married name even though my name isn't hyphenated. My mom's like, "You're still a ___." Meanwhile, my husband receives the packages and grouses. He's like, "You're not a ____ anymore!" My MIL, too, thinks the name change thing is important. So, like I said, it's a sweet gesture. Maybe it's really important to her hubby, and that's why she did it.

I am not a mushy person, but that is sorta a nice anniversary gift. A nice way of showing your affection to your spouse.

And well like it's been said there are far worse names than Sarah Michelle Prince. It's just gonna be weird not being able to refer to her as SMG.

EDIT;

Yes. No SMP is not as nice, sounds frighteningly like an STD.

i dont think she should have done it. no offense to her, but hollywood marriages never last.

Some do! And i don't really think wither one of them is really an a-lister or a favorite among the papparazzi so I think they're able to avoid a lot of the pressure that happens when you're constantly under public scrutiny. If Sarah wants to change her name that's her choice. She was trying do something for her husband whom she loves and I think if there was a remote sign that they wouldn't last the difference she wouldn't have changed her name. Simple as that!

It sure does sound like a cheap way to get out of buying the guy an anniversary gift to me.

Seriously, established actors who change their stage names take the chance of losing fan recognition. Just imagine a movie starring "Jane Turner," and "Anjolina Pitt."

I know I think it's a genuine concern too. I mean she has three new films out in 2008, will she be billed as SMG or SMP? she signed the contrct as SMG, will she have to honour it?

I guess it's out of her hands now! I think though the company would probably honor her wishes and use whichever name she wants to be used.

Well I don't think you should change your name for your spouse, that's just me. Good for her if she wants to, but I don't think she should have.
And though she did, she should still be billed in public as SMG. I do not like Prinze...EEEK!

Lyri

if she wants to change her name, then i think it's up to her. i don't think she should have to bend to the wishes of the people in control of her movies, or her public apperances or whatever. i think it was a lovely gesture, to show how much she's commited to her husband, and i think we're being really negative by focusing on how some celebrity marriages don't last.

Like most people here I think it's a very sweet thing of her to do. And although it's probably gonna take a little time to get used to it, I'm gonna take a stand and say that out of respect for her as an actress (our actress), I'm gonna be calling her SMP.

I totally support this.I mean I'm not one of those people who believes once you get married you take your husband's name, but if it's done of your own choice I totally support it. Especially Sarah did it as a romantic gesture which is just so sweet. However, for the people who are saying she may lose recognition or that Sarah Michelle Prinze just doesn'r roll of the tongue I would presume that she would retain the stage name of Gellar which many actresses do. None of which I can actually bring to mind right now. Typical!

Ok this is a weak example of it working for many reasons but I'm using it anyway. Posh Spice used to go by Victoria Adams but then she got married and became Mrs. Beckham. At the time there was alot of talk of her not being as recognisable because of it but now if you said the name Victoria Adams the majority of people wouldn't know who your talking about. Now, I realise that the American contingent still might not know who I am talking about but on this side of the planet they are treated like royals, so it was major news.

Awww, that's sweet! I like it, I think it sounds nice because I was never that crazy about Gellar, anyway. It just didn't fit her, imo. I did the same thing on my third anniversary, and didn't tell the hubby till I'd gotten my new driver's license and social security card, which I enclosed in his anniversary card.

It sounds a bit bizzare.
I've always thought there was no much reason to NOT change your name unless your income is somehow linked to your name. In which case, there isn't much reason to change it.
I mean she COULD have changed her name when she got married and still worked under Gellar. People work in Hollywood all the time.

Besides, it has that "negative" under current where she didn't think it mattered that much before. Either they were going to not last or she just didn't care enough, but now she does. You gotta watch out for those slippery slopes in marriage. They can come back to bite you in the butt!

They end up going a little something like this:
Freddie: Why can't you just support me?
SM: But, I DO! I love you!
Freddie: But, you can't give up YOUR stuff to support me?
SM: But, I DO! I changed my name? Doesn't that say anything?
Freddie: Yeah, you changed your name...FIVE YEARS INTO THE MARRIAGE! What? Was I not that important before? The first 5 years of our marriage meant nothing? That was when you weren't supporting me?

And she's left with nothing to say. Poor girl.

I just saw this a couple weeks ago. I was reading a magazine and they were doing a listing on where celebs had been that week, and they named her as Sarah Michelle Prinze. I was like, hmmm....when did that happen?

And my two cents on the marriage thing and taking the husband's name..... I think it's just a representation of togetherness. It's not a domination of the male over the female (in my opinion). It's the beginning of a new family and a way of showing togetherness. There have been cases of males taking the female's last name, so it's not really a big deal. I had a great time taking on my husband's last name and letting our relationship turn into something different. We weren't seperate people anymore, we were two people embarking on the same journey together.

Perhaps that's why many celeb marriages fail, because they strive and struggle to keep their own identities, especially by keeping their last names and not wholly attaching themselves to their spouses/marriages.

To be realistic, the way her career has gone up to now, the only ones who'll notice the difference will be the people who remember her as Buffy, and since she's really trying to escape that image, changing her name just might be a good career move.

Of course, a relatively unknown actress who's 30 years old has a rough roe th hoe anyway. Hollywood seems to prefer their female actors to be 20 years old and willing to strip for the camera. Since she's neither...

I think being recognized is irrelevant as regards to her name change as in an article she stated she was keeping her stage name as Sarah Michelle Gellar. Sarah Michelle Prinze is for her private/personal life.

So the world will still know her as Sarah Michell Gellar, while Fred and maybe their little circle of friends will now know her as Sarah Michelle Prinz, if they ever think of her by her whole name.

I hope she at least got him a pair of socks or some new underwear to go with THAT anniversary present. Talk about Hollywood extravagance!

HOMER SIMPSON!!! Freddie's idol!! She must REALLY love the guy to go all out like that. This is one Hollywood marriage that's most definitely gonna last. (I read somewhere that he got her a director's cut set of Scooby Do 1&2 autographed by the cast for Christmas.) The love just radiates...

I don't think things are all that desperate for her. Also, I think it's best that she's keeping her stage name. I mean, she has soap fans, too. Soap fans, in general, tend to be every bit as rabid as Joss Whedon fans, but also used to having more control than fans of other genres.

If worse comes to worse, she could always go back to soaps. I'm sure she still has fans there. It's not primetime or movies, but it is decent-paying (Ingo Rademacher, for example, owns a beach house in Malibu), steady work and it does provide you with a nice fan base. Also, if you decide to have a family, it's really good about working that in. Between her Buffy fan base and her soap fan base, she would be able to command a lot of power (and moolah) in that industry. Of course, it's also a huge step down in terms of prestige and the hours are long and grueling, so I'd only want to to be a last resort.

We soap fans just love it when our favorites come back as a last resort, though. Sarah Brown just went back to soaps after leaving to do bit parts in horrible movies like Big Mama's House 2, and the fans (myself included) act like it's the second coming. We loved her acting so much the first time around that we're just thrilled to have her back. The same was true when Freddie's old squeeze, Kimberly McCallough, came back. The same would be true if Vanessa Marcil came back as Brenda, now that Las Vegas ended. Heck, if VM came back, we'd probably throw a parade. There are also a lot of actors whom are generally regarded by fans as too good for soaps, but we're glad they stay because we just love to watch them day in and day out (Rick Hearst comes to mind; he consistently spins craptastic lines into Emmy gold). Obviously, I'm biased toward GH, but the concept is the same throughout the industry.

So even if she is having problems because she's 30, I do, at least, think she has something to fall back on.

This is why i love and admire SMG so much. She is so normal & down to earth. Most famous celebs keep their names-- and end up divorcing. But Sarah and Freddie seem to have such a loving, normal relationship that has lasted.
