Not my most favorite regular cover so far, but it's different. The variant is better than usual; cool seeing Buffy dressed that way.

Regular cover is done by Jon Foster again, variant is Jeanty's work as always. Here's the blurb that goes with this issue:
Acclaimed television series writer, Drew Goddard (Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Alias; Lost), takes the reins on Season Eight with his four-issue arc titled "Wolves at the Gate." The gang (yep, Dawn too) travels to Tokyo where they duel vampires with unusual, yet strangely familiar, powers.
I'm not a big fan of the regular cover either, but the variant however... is amazing! I got to have it!
I wonder if this arc is gonna bring us Oz?
PS: Those belts on the wolf (on the regular cover) got me scared for a second. He has fours of them. I had to check... but phew... twilight only has three. How lame would it be if he turned out to be a werewolf.
i actually perfer the regular cover. there's something about a Japanese'd Xander that's giving me a major wiggins. lol. but i love the colours of the regular, so glad it's my only option to buy! lmao.
i'm glad to see Drew in charge of this arc, can't remember if i knew this or not, but i can't wait to see what he has in store for these issues.
and i agree with Allycat, maybe Oz's is gonna pop up? you know, when Willow turns a corner...;)

Buffy looks more like Elliot in Scrubs in the regular cover than like SMG.

Wow.
To be honest I nearly puked when I saw John Foster's cover...I appreciate art in all it's forms but not when it makes Buffy looks like a deformed Dakota Fanning. :X
I'm really starting to love George's art, though...especially after looking at the regular cover! Why Jo, why'd you have to leave us?!!

im not sure, but i see what your saying. if you look at the woman, she has two paws in front of her. one paw may be from the werewolf in the middle, but what about the other one? could it be that there is one behind her that wraped its paws around her and is trying to pull her back?
as for buffy, i have 2 things to say:
1. she looks sad. she looks like she just got done crying cause her eyes are bloodshot, the expression on her face is glum and she is holding the stake with both hands like a scared cheerleader girl in a horror flick who is about to die. im just not seeing the confidence of a slayer with almost a decade of experience under her belt. (this has intrigued me as to the plot of this arc)
2. the artists representation of her is not too bad. my reasoning is that the artist isnt showing what buffy/sarah physically looked like at the end of season 7, he is showing what buffy/sarah would look like if they were filming season 8 for television; and, if you have seen any pics of sarah lately, she looks different (thinner, more mature face) than she did at the end of season 7.
i do miss jo though.

There is another paw between the male vamp and the wolf though, look closely. All 3 paws can't belong to the wolf....can they? o_O

Like the Oz idea. Although I'm confused as to which comic he's turning up in.. some say BtVS, and others Angel.
Anyway I love both these covers, they're awesome. Chen's first cover doesn't look like Buffy at all to me, and I love Fosters individuality more. I'll want both of these. Other peeps are also suggesting we might see Dracula because of the wolf thing (cause he appeared as one in BvD). Also going to be interesting to see if some info about Xander's days with Dracula in Goodard's Tales of the Vampires.

I think they are both beautiful! really looking forward to Drew Goddard coming on board too, werewolves/vampires should be exciting.

yeah, i know. i didnt mention that paw because i assumed it was the wolfs right paw. my question pertains to his left side.......there are two paws there. whats up with that?
i am intrigued.

MAybe they are wolf-like vamps........he other rwo paws have to belong to the woman unless there is some type of deformed werewolf. And besides...Buffys holding a stake so idk...................

Love that variant. I wanna frame it, and hang it on my wall.

Here's why I like guys like Goddard, and Vaughan, but I'm not so much the fan of Lynch over on Angel.
With Goddard and Vaughan one gets the feeling they know verse canon inside out, and they love it. They're going to expand, clarify, and keep it fresh at the same time. Vaughan does it with the characters. Goddard finds all these little story details from times past, and makes them matter. With Lynch I get the feeling he knows the material, but he thinks he has a better idea. The problem is, he doesn't.

The only Lynch thing I've read is Angel: After the Fall #1, so I'm not sure about him yet. The only thing I don't like so far is the big telepathic fish.
Yeah, looking forward to Goddard's run on Buffy starting March. Two Joss issues before that.
Anyone else find it kind of ironic that a series based around a Vampire Slayer takes until issue 12 to finally get around to the Vampire storyline haha.
Anyway both of those covers look great, Buffy doesn't look quite right on the first one and right enough it looks as though she is frightened, so far from home fighting a different kind of Vampire after the events of whatever happens in #10 and #11. The Asian Vampire/Therian creatures look particularly cool.
The second one I think is meant to be more of a parody, I love the Geisha Willow heh, Xanders eye patch looks odd of sorts, in a Kill-Bill-ish sort of way (you know who I mean).

The last few seasons didn't have a whole lotta slaying either.
