EXCLUSIVE: Preview BUFFY SEASON EIGHT 10 by JOSS WHEDON!
Category: Art and Photography

Almost one year ago, we launched MySpace Comic Books with a special contest -- a chance for a massive Buffy fan to be written into Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight. Ten months later, Buffy Season Eight is a sales juggernaut, Joss came back to MySpace to debut Sugarshock in MySpace Dark Horse Presents, and issue 10 is about to hit the stands -- starring Robin Balzer, the winner of the contest!

When we announced the winner, editor Scott Allie contributed a guest blog about how the contest became bigger than we ever anticipated, and how Robin's entry earned her a permanent place in Buffy's word. We've reprinted Scott's blog below, along with an exclusive five page preview of issue 10. Stay tuned for more news on this unique milestone in Buffy history. Thanks again to everyone at Dark Horse Comics for making it happen, and of course, to Joss for the fantastic opportunity. Take it away, Scott...

Dark Horse and Myspace.com partnered to present a contest calling for short essays about how Buffy the Vampire Slayer has affected fans' lives. Joss has picked the best of these essays, and the writer of the winning essay will be drawn into an upcoming issue of Joss's current relaunch of Buffy, in the Season Eight comic series. We assumed that this simply meant that someone's picture would be drawn in as an incidental character, but when over the last few days Joss picked the winning entry, he decided to make her more involved.

"I read a lot of moving entries," Joss writes, "but the enormity of Robin Balzer's struggle was overwhelming just to hear about. She deserves a place not just in the book but in the mythology of Buffy. I thought it would be hard to put someone in the book gracefully, but just thinking about Robin opened up not only a cameo character but another branch of the Buffy mythos. She'll appear in issue ten, and it feels as though she's been waiting there already. I'm grateful to her husband Jerrod for sharing their story with me, and for helping build ours."

As often happens, the winner was a little unconventional, an entry that stood out not just for the quality and the scope of what the writer had to say, but the fact that he was writing on behalf of someone else. Here's the winning essay, by Jerrod Balzer.

"I'm writing for my wife, Robin Balzer, for this essay, because she's disabled.

"Robin and I didn't have cable or satellite for years, so we had only seen the original movie of Buffy until the first season came to DVD. At that time, schizophrenia was gradually taking over my wife's mind. Our growing love for the show as each season came out gave something for my wife to focus on and look forward to during those first dark and confusing years. The character Drusilla gave her a fantasy icon to relate to, and kept her spirits up as though she were a part of the story, and of course Buffy's character gave her the strength to battle her 'demons.'

"Now, she's completely disabled from her illness, in and out of coherence, but I keep Buffy and Angel posters on the wall which give her focus even when we're not watching them. We've also become attached to Firefly. Again, she can relate to River in her own way. We really owe a lot to the imagination of Joss Whedon.

"For this reason, I know it would mean the world to my wife, Robin, if she could see herself with Buffy in a comic. For the struggle she consistently goes through, I feel she deserves to be with a character that's helped her so much over the years."

As Joss mentions, Robin will appear in issue ten, which is quite a bit further down the line than we originally planned to feature the winner. But when he told me how he wanted to involve her, it was clear that there could be no better prize.

We thank everyone who sent their moving and complex entries. We're glad that this character has had such a profound effect on so many people. I want to close with a list of the five runners up. In Buffy 10, we'll dedicate a letter column to the contest and to the runners up.

Best,
Scott Allie

Huh. Willow looks better now with green/hazel eyes. She looked so weird with blue eyes.

Georges Jeanty has a more unique style, but he's kind of all over the place. One panel will look fantastic, then you get something that looks atrocious.

This guy's a little more consistent, but more generic.

Saw a few preview pages on another site, can't wait to get this one.

"Come on Buffy, we're flying."
"You're flying, I'm dangling!"

I actually think Jeanty's Willow is better.

I can't believe that Buffy could actually fantasize over "Percy" Bond. (Did you know that he can't even drive the Aston Martin DB-5? He can't operate a stick shift.) About the only thing one could say to his advantage is that with him around, Roger Moore is only the second worst James Bond in the history of the franchise.

Buffy's anywhere but here is my anywhere but here.
I'm still waiting for #9 to arrive at my house, I hope by monday But took at a look at this preview anyway.

I like Jeanty a little more I think, but Richards is fine.
I wouldn't mind having a slice of Daniel Craig. He's a little over muscled there though, heh. Bikini doesn't offend me (like it does on some other sites), that's pretty much what you imagine looking like in your anywhere but here scenarios... plus she's at the beach.
Xander's line is cute.

Actually, Miss K, I'm an Ian Flemming man. He wrote James Bond as a very specific character, with certain specific qualities. For the record, yes, I do prefer Connery, but I freely admit that his Bond was almost as far off target as all of the others. It's just that Percy is so far off as to be a travesty (Imagine George Clooney as Batman, and you get the picture) and hopefully a short lived one.

I don't have to imagine, George Clooney was Batman! and it was very very bad. I'm not exactly into Bond but really when do the studios maintain the integrity of the books? In fact there is probably a lot of Bond fans out there who don't even know it started out as a book. Sad but true.

That art's almost as bad as After The Fall o_O;

One second Buffy's on a beach, the next a field of yellow grass? Since when did shadows become lines? Willow and Dawn never looked so bad(Hell, Dawn's never looked bad at all...). And wow Buffy got in shape, and i don't remember her having that much chest before O.O

Since it's Buffy's fantasy, she sure will make herself look good. :D

Nice change of pace. Time to daydream. The flying seems a bit 'because we can do it in a comic and it makes for a kick-ass cover.' Wish I could fly, teleport, etc. Willow has it good.

Did Xander say he doesn't LFF her anymore? LFF as in love? I hope he means in a fatherly/brotherly way. Lol!

I'm not groovin' on the art though. Dawn kinda looks like an overexcited chipmunk. :S

I think Xander meant it in a cute, brotherly way, "I don't love you anymore." It's not like you've gotta be in love with that person to say that ;)

Lol, he was just kidding, you know when a friend does something silly to you and you jokingly say something like "I don't like you anymore" without the actual malice, just kidding them to get a smile.

The art looks really good. I wonder if Daniel Craig (or his people) approved using his likeness? I still don't know what to expect of this issue.

I didn't 'full size' the pics because I want it to be a surprise but from what I could see I can't wait. Although mister muscle up there is not at all anything I am looking forward to. Eeeek.

OMG yes it was!
You're totally right, and Willow's was a bit more on the yellow side, that's strange because Darkhorse.com actually has the cover with Buffy and pink, so who knows where this one came from!
