I was just watching the episode "The Freshmen" yesterday and was wondering something.
Why do you think Buffy and Willow just didn't room together right away? It would've worked out incredible well for both of them, and then Willow wouldn't have had to move in after the second episode.
What do you all think?

It's possible they weren't allowed to request specific roommates.

Because we wouldn't be able to have Kathie! "She irons her jeans....she's evil!" :p But, they probably couldn't request them....which I find kind of odd. Most colleges you can.

It's also about the disorientation of college that the writers were trying to nail down. Having Buffy and Willow in the same dorm room right off the bat would have been too comfy.

I agree but it's not very realistic. :)

Actually, it is. Lots of colleges don't guarantee that you'll get your choice of roommates, particularly freshmen. Some don't even give you a choice, going on the theory that part of the college experience is to meet new people.

Good point. Well-said.
What I wondered was why they lived on campus at all. They went to Sunnydale U., right? Why couldn't they just commute? Most colleges allow those with parents living within the city limits to commute from home rather than to live on campus.

yeah i commute and im in a different borough than my school! (i live in Queens, my college is in Manhattan but it only takes an hour, or possibly 45 min on a good day). mucho cheaper that way! But still, i guess they wanted the "full college experience" for these characters. But Buffy did go home quite a bit. I think they just wanted to show them all reaching a more independent lifestyle.

Some people don't commute even though they live in the same city. It's part of the college experience :)
didn't Buffy say that she hoped her mom would let her live on campus as it was too far to come home everynight?

Yeah she did make some comment in season three about it being too far to travel every day.
And everyone else's points about the full college experience and everything are good too.
Also, I think they didn't live in the same dorm at the start because it would've been too 'nice' as Blondie Bear said. I'm sure the writers would say there was a rule about it at UC Sunnydale, maybe they were alphabetized or something? But then when Kathy left, Buffy's dorm had a spot, so it was a perfect chance for Willow to say 'Oh! I'll go there!' lol.
I always found it funny how irritated Buffy got with Kathy doing stupid little things, and Willow's roommate was like this crazy party person and she just put up with it :P

But, then, that's Willow, isn't it? Repress until things go BOOM!

Haha good point. Although in the magic in season six way I think you're talking about, she was trying to do the right thing by not using magic for however long it was. That was pretty strong :)
Also, I think it was partly Buffy's hightened Slayer senses tingling about Kathy. XP

Actually, the repression thing has always been Willow's way of handling things until the pressure finally gets too much.

Im guessing cause Willow really didnt have her own voice then. She always put up with whatever was around her until she came to a boiling point. And i think the little things started to irritate Buffy after she suspected that KAthy was a demon yet she always seemed so good, nice and joly! Damn!I think i would be irritated too! LOL

Sunnydale isn't that big, the furthest I could imagine the school being from her house is 15-25 minutes, which is not that far at all! I drive almost thirty minutes to work every day.

True, but neither Buffy nor her friends owned vehicles, plus, even in a small town, the college campus needn't be right in town. Of course, Willow walked from Buffy's house to the college in "The Killer In Me", so it's likely they just wanted the opportunity to be away from home.

If this is a college that doesn't take requests for roommates, how do Willow and Buffy end up in the same dorm? Just luck? Did Willow request a room change?

It happens, especially if the college isn't too large. The first college I attended had four men's dorms at the time, and there were at least four guys from my high school in my dorm.
Did Willow request a room change?
Maybe. My school did accept requests for trades after school started, as some roommates just aren't compatible. Since Kathy had "withdrawn", that left Buffy without a roomie, so if both she and Willow requested the change, I'd expect there wouldn't have been a problem.
