I feel the sudden and uncontrollable need to gush about Giles. Publicly, it would appear. Please join me in the swoonage.
Giles love: Top 10 Reasons Why Giles is the Best Guy in the Buffyverse
10. He's freakin' hot. Let's just get that one out of the way right now. My apologies to ASH, ASH's gf, and my husband for any discomfort that might cause.
9. Giles speaks his mind -- intelligently and in English. Don't get me wrong. I like Scooby speak. I even like Spike speak and Dru's crazy mutterings. But sometimes, I just need to hear some plain English. Giles tells it like it is. Whether you've made him proud or you've scared the pants off him by acting like a rank, arrogant amateur, he's not one to prevaricate.
8. He gets excited about books. How cool is that? He doesn't just like the way they look (although he does). He doesn't just like them for their educational or entertainment value (although he likes those, too). He liked the way they feel. He likes the way they smell. He likes everything about books. He is practically in love with books. You're probably wondering why I love that he loves books. Think about it: Giles is one of those rare, confident men who will look something up rather than bs the answer. I'll bet he uses maps, too. I'll bet he can quote Jane Austen to me. Giles loves books -- and I love Giles for his big, beautiful brain. If I had a Giles fantasy, it would involve Jane Austen quotage, singing, and the rare books collection of a world-renowned library. Maybe a Gutenberg Bible or a first edition Pamela.
7. He's a reformed bad boy. Most of us at least fantasize about the reformed bad boy who wears leather or a wife beater and leans just right. I'm sorry, guys. We just do.
6. Giles is tough. When it's necessary, he can swing an axe or a sword with the best of them. He can withstand torture. He's like a rock. Giles has got bravery oozing out of every pore.
5. He is a tough reformed bad boy, but he's also the sweet, sorta geeky nerdy guy with the books. Okay, before I start gushing about the books again, what I really mean to say here is that even though he can be tough, he's not macho. In his relationship with Jenny, he's sweet and vulnerable. He's even cute. It's rare and wonderful to get the cute, sensitive guy and the wife-beater leans right guy in one.
4. Giles sings like it's nobody's business, man. Plus, even Oz admits that he has good taste in music, too. So now we're at the hot singer/guitarist stereotype? It's like Joss packed every possible good guy stereotype into this one man. And I buy into it!
3. Giles is a great dad. He's no Mac Scorpio, but he's close. He isn't anybody's biological father, but he really sort of is like a dad to all of them. He loved Buffy. He gives her rules and stability when she needs it. He sacrifices his career and his happiness for her benefit. He even tries to back off and let her sink or swim on her own. Those are all things with which real fathers struggle. He makes mistakes along the way. And those mistakes break his heart. No matter what, though, his love for Buffy and for the rest of the kids is always written plainly on his face. It's just adorable.
2. He nailed Buffy's mom. On a police car. Twice. There were handcuffs involved. Catch me. I'm about to swoon. Poor Giles doesn't get much action during his time in Sunnydale, but I get the impression that it's because if we actually saw what was going on in his bedroom, (or on police cars) he'd put the vamps and demons of the Buffyverse to shame.
1. Giles makes the hard decisions. He's just a man, but it's easy to forget that and think he's one of the super-heroes. He directs the research. He killed Ben. He was willing to kill Dawn, if it came to that. All of this sounds bad, but it's really not. Giles is just a man, but he's willing to shoulder the burden for the world. That's amazing. I could write an essay on it, but I'll just stick with a paragraph. The point here is that when the going gets tough, Giles is always willing to step up to the plate. He's always willing to do what he feels is necessary, even when it's difficult or painful or pretty much impossible.
So, basically, I love Giles because he's like every single positive male stereotype all wrapped up into one wonderful pa... umm, some non-euphemistic-sounding container in which something can be wrapped. He can do it all: parent, sing, speak his mind, emote, think, fight, plan, have hot sex, save the world, etc. He can do it all and look darn good doing it.
Thank you for allowing me to gush. Please join me in listing your reasons for the Giles love. There are so many reasons! I'm sure I left plenty out.
