I'm watching this episode as I type this and I must say, it's pretty bad. This has to be the worst episode of the series in my opinion. There are a lot of things that just irk me about it.

1. How is it that the knife wielding man appears as if from nowhere without anybody noticing. He is a big guy. He'd at least make some noise as he's sneaking up on the people. First he sneakes up on the scoobies at the museum, then on Xander and Ampata at the bleachers. How did he manage to sneak up behind them from the top of the bleachers anyway??

2. Ampata has to be the corniest character ever. How is she upset about wanting a normal life? You can't have a normal life, you are a freaking life sucking mummy. The only reason there is a guy with a knife lurking around is because of your existance! And did she really fall in love with Xander in just a day? And how did she age ten years in one visit to the restroom? Did she accidently step into some restroom parrallel universe or something?

3. Xander annoyed me a lot too. He was about to spill the beans about everything to a girl he JUST met. I know he's smarter than that. Buffy should have smacked the crap out of him for that. And the way he was acting towards Willow....

4. What was up with the Cordelia storyline? I love her and everything but it was just filler. The only useful thing that came out of it was the introduction of Oz. They could have simply left that scene and used all the other Cordelia screen time they used to clean up some of the sloppyness of the storyline. Tell us where Angel is, develop the Xander/Ampata storyline more, or some more mummy explaining scenes.

5. The final fight wasn't much of a fight. She just decomposed. End of story. Kind of anticlimactic.

I'm sorry about being highly critical about this ep but it really bugged me.

I'm currently watching the show from start to finish. The only reason I watched this episode is because it's after School Hard. I should have skipped it. Not to say it was ALL bad. The introduction of Oz was excellent.

how is Oz introduced in this ep.? I've forgotten.

First, Cordelia walks up to him and talks about Devon. Thats the first time we see him. Then at the Bronze, he sees Willow in the eskimo outfit and asks Devon "who is that girl?" and Devon goes "a foreign exchange student" (thinking he meant the mummy girl) and he's like "no, the eskimo."

Then he goes up to talk to her just when Buffy pulls her away to go help Xander, and does that "who is that girl?" line which as we know, gets repeated again in Halloween.

Thus, Oz introduced.

Ampata aged when she came out of the bathroom because she sucked the life out of the body guard dude...give her, apparently, more youth and vitality. but i think it just made her look too old, lol.

and anyone else notice the makeup was completely ridiculous after she got out? i understand they blushed up her cheeks like she had more life, but she just looked funny.

BUT it's also the first time we meet Johnathon... isnt it?

What wondered me the most - that's how Ampata learned English from listening as she stated.
Maybe it has to do smth with her supernatural being - aka mummy-state - lipstick, buses, tv, -etc - for a 500-year old she seems to fit perfectly into modern society.
They do teach alot in museums, huh? ..Lol..

Just as Joyce said: Look at that. Two days in America, and Ampata already seems like she belongs here. She's really fitting in. Hmm!

Edit:

Like he did to Miss French before? ;)

Well, I can't say I hate this episode either.

Personally I think this is one of the shows worst eps if not the worst but, in saying that, I would still watch it again and enjoy it.

About Ampata having all her cultural cues, maybe when she sucks the life out of people she also taps into the brain and sucks out what they know?

But then again, remember she was still under the plate "spell" while travelling across States so she couldn't consume this information - though, she 's probably terrible liar when she said she learned by listening - and got her information upon sucking life dry of her first victim - Rodney.

I think she could listen to what people were saying even under the curse because that's how she found out about Ampata coming to stay with Buffy and Joyce.

Still she needed someone to explain things she hears to her.
Just recall how much they didn't have way back 500 years in inca's society.

Well, I'm just being all picky but this thing about episode simply amuses me the most. :)

I loved how cute Ampata and Xander were in their interactions, especially with the Twinkies. But, yeah, this wasn't the best episode ever.

As for the language thing, I learned in my Linguistics class last semester that it's nearly impossible to learn a new language just by listening (or "immersion") after the age of about 10. We just completely lose the ability to pick up languages easily. Kids under the age of 10 can learn any language they're exposed to. Ampata was 16 when she was killed, and had no chance to practice the language she was listening to, so there's very little chance that she would be able to speak English at all beyond maybe a few words here and there.

That's what I meant, despite being able to listen, in real world she'd be unable to implement things she heard into action, she had no dictionaries and no grammar books in reach.

Magic rules!

Definitely one of the worst, but not THE worst. "Beer Bad" is the worst. I can watch "Inca Mummy Girl" and get some enjoyment out of it, but I simply cannot sit through "Beer Bad".

I can sit through "Beer Bad." I can't sit through "Him."

I'm having deja vu. Have we said this before?

I can sit through any episode of Buffy, except that Robot one :p But I bet I could sit through it :D

Inca Mummy Girl didn't this introduce us to Johnathon, I can definitely watch that again!

Well, now that I've seen most of the series, I freely admit that IMG is nowhere near one of the best eps (or even in the top half of them ^^ ), I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for it. It was the first episode I watched when the show aired the first time here in Germany (and I rewatched it on my VCR like ten times before the next one aired), and - obviously - it made me come back for the rest of the series.

While it may surely have been Eskimo!Willow more than anything else (and boy did I get jealous at Oz even at his first appearance :lmao: ), but that's one episode you would never, ever in my life find me skipping. Gee, I guess I could still go along the whole show speaking just about the entire (German re-dub) dialogue... XD

Wow! A lot of Inca Mummy hate here!
I have loved this ep since I first saw it on TV, and 6-8 times on DVD since then. I don't know why, I guess because it was so bittersweet. ;) I liked the actress who played Ampata. (Cute!) The only thing that bothers me is the ending: I think it would have been much more poignant for her to NOT go for Willow, and not go for Xander (instead of turning on him). She should have sat there and dried up, refusing to kill her love Xan-man. I really wanted to learn more about the character, more of her background and the time she came from. Ara Celi deserved at least a two or three ep arc instead of a single ep, IMHO.
