okay dont bite my head off but i think the writers from buffy could have made him more yes he was brave, courageous and all that other stuff but he never became a warrior xander spent as more time with buffy besides willow than any one else but he never learned how to fight he was always so dependent upon buffy for salvation on the battlefield i would have love to see xander and spike go to kick some demon butt together. i mean look at wesley he started off as a goof-ball watcher but over time transformed into a kick-butt demon slayer i know that wesley has experienced some real hardship that changed him in some ways but so has xander he's been by buffy's side through everything. i love xander but it couldnt have hurt to see him kicking but alongside willow and buffy i mean he could have been a great fighter and still be the guy we have all come to love i dont know what do you guys think.

Erm Didn't he do the sword fighting deal along side Dawn in the season finale?
And I think it was kinda important that Xander was always the average joe of the group. That was the whole point. The normal one. No powers, no strengths, no fighting skills but as Buffy said in Checkpoint 'the boy has clocked more field time than all of you combined. He's part of the unit'. Despite being normal and not being able to hold himself in a fight, he still contributes and does his part and helps.

That is so true. He gives Dawn a little speech like that too when she finds out she isn't a potential. They are just the "normal" people in the group. But that doesn't stop him (them) from fighting.
And I think Xander improved a lot from the first seasons where he was constantly being knocked out or almost killed or getting in the way. He could hold his own towards the end and sure wasn't afraid to get in the fray anymore. He had more confidence and knew what he could and couldn't do.

Maybe before the finale he could have said something about trying not to be the the useless guy, instead trying to be the helpful guy, and tried to learn some fighting stuff during the beginning of the season. But I think his character was still meant to be the ordinary guy. That doesn't me he can't learn a tiny bit of self defense! But he seemed to fair all right at the end so I can't complain.

palabravampiress agrees: I agree! He improved a lot, but just not so much as to get all super powery.
Slayer Comma The agrees: Exactly, he was no longer fray-adjacent. And for to him have developed superpowers would have cheapened the character"
Xander was stronger and braver then Buffy and most of the rest of his friends because he went into battle with no special power--he was just Xander and had to rely on just normal human intelligence, strength and cunning to survive. No wonder he's my favorite character from the show.

Xander was really good at shooting an arrow. Just look how he exactly shot the bringer's hand stopping him from killing Rona. He improved that skill since S6, where we see him more often using that as a weapon.
