We thought this might be a good time to get feedback from you guys on some things. So here is yoour chance to make a suggestion for the boards. It doesn't mean we'll use it, but we'll certainly listen.

first and foremost, the new layout rocks. the only suggestion i have is to put the karma counter back in. im kindof OCD about things and i like to watch the numbers.

I agree about the karma counter. I don't have much but I liked seeing it go up, lol.

I would suggest making a new Anya or Doyle skin, but that would only make me happy :D

So umm for a board wide good for everyone I'd say, oh I got it!! A tiny small Scifi show forum. But you already said no to that to keep the board strictly Whedon.

A new idea um, every new month you could come out with a new selection of avatars, but I think you already do that! lol I'll think of something 'better' later :)

It's hard to make alot of good suggestions to such an already amazing board!

I think a low-fi theme would be a great addition. I sometimes visit this website from my girlfriend's computer and although the internet there is fast, her PC is really old and all the graphics take a pretty hefty toll.

I have an idea that might be fun and interactive.

What about doing a monthly newsletter?
We could use information about the show and characters from all the sources(credible) as long as we acknowledge where the information comes from. We could have News about the Buffy boards, things related to upgrades and the like we could do member profiles

We could even get some of our fanficers and artists to create a specially made story/comic strip(like you see in news papers).

Obviously, we, the members, could do it but I think it would be an interesting and it would also have a group thing.

I'm sure there are people on here, that aren't Gategod(i'm teasing fellow Ha'Neshian), that would like to have roles as journos, editors, features and any other part fo a magazine.

On the Sci-fi addition, I don't see the point as we have a sister site that is dedicated to that - After-Darkness.

If you want to discuss Sci-Fi on a very active board get over there and invite lots of people and get it going(not that it isn't already great for me).

Edit:

Thanks

I don't suggest a long drawn out fanfic - we have a wonderful fanfic section.

I suggest a very basic comic strip in the vein of news papers

Ohh and maybe we could add a section reviewing a new fanfic

I like the monthly newsletter idea.

One thing I'd really like for it to include is an update on some of the projects that we have going on. I am, for example, part of the Wishverse project. Most of that goes on behind-the-scenes so that most members don't even know it's still active. I think it'd be neat if the newsletter included a little blurb saying "So-and-so just signed on to write a Wishverse story" or "So-and-so just signed on to create some artwork." I'd want to do that for art competitions and stuff, too. I'd also want it to keep a running tally of the house cup points and announce the members and new members of the month.

A couple of people have mentioned reviewing new fan-fics. I think that's an awesome idea. I'd love to see a reviews section in which recent fiction, artwork, or posts (say someone makes a jaw-dropping good argument in the Season 1 thread) are reviewed. I think the reviews section could be a good way to draw attention to deserving creative efforts and posts.

I would, of course, be willing to help with the implementation of any of these ideas.

Ohh another idea but this is definitely for the members to do and nothing really for the board to add:)

Crazy idea - as a celebration, why don't some of the fanfic writers write a fanfic WITH members of the Buffy Boards taking center stage.

Wouldn't it be fun to have Buffy and the Scoobies have Blondie Bear move to Sunnydale High and be part of the action or Buffy just defeating the First then has her biggest bad yet 'Palabravampiress'?

Just spitting balls here.

A Doyle forum. For my favorite 'Angel' Character.

a Doyle forum would never really be used, it would be just wasted space, considering there would be no news concerning Glenn Quinn, space that could be put to better use.

plus, i'd find it a little disrespectful to have something like this now, since the actor has sadly passed away.

How can you call a section of this forum for Glenn Quinn a waste of space. All of the projects he was in, other than Angel. I would find it the complete opposite of disrespectful. It would be respecting and honoring his memory. We could talk about his character Doyle, aswell as his many others. The character/Actor forums aren't just to discuss the new projects they are working on but on their previous projects aswell. What about an Oz/Seth Green Forum then, like Spirit_Of_Fred said. But I'd prefer a Doyle forum. I love talking about him.

We had both of those forums at one time but they were removed because of disuse (as I told you before GG). If there is enough discussion of them in the others forum to warrant their own forums, then we will consider it.

Just a suggestion, but I was going through the different forum styles (decided on Tabula Rasa, in the end ;)) and was thinking. Maybe it'd be cool if we had a style for each dorm (much like the one on our respective dorm pages, only maybe jazzed up a bit?). Each dorm could create their own banner from a few set guidelines (ie: size, text) and have that as a choice for the styles?

Again, just a thought. Also realise that bandwidth and such is something to keep in mind, just thought it'd be a fun thing to do :)

With regard to the reporting a post.
Would it be acceptable for the moderators to send a PM or similar, telling the person to improve their replys to other people, rather than wait for a member to report some-one?
Many times I've seen the need to 'go to a members defence' and thereby putting myself up as able to be reported.

Buffy Summers
06-06-2008, 08:12 PM
Yeah, we don't do anything at all... ;)

That's the reason for reporting a post - rather than making an attack back at someone. The purpose of the report feature is because the mods can't be everywhere at every moment of the day.

I would also like to see the 10th anniversary skin's banner re-aligned. It just doesn't look as good as it once did, and I really like it as a skin otherwise. Is it difficult to do?

Another thing I have noticed is that when using the "New Posts" feature it is often impossible to distinguish between Buffy and Angel forums unless the topic title is completely unambiguous. This can be a problem because you might be avoiding spoilers of a certain season, or you may want to talk about Angel Season 4 and not Buffy Season 4. It just gets a little irritating after a while. Would it be possible to change the forum titles from "Season 1", "Season 2" etc. to "Buffy Season 1", "Angel Season 2", or even "B: Season 1", or "BtVS: Season 1". It would just clear things up nicely, and I can't see it being that difficult to implement. Then again, I don't really have a clue on the technical side of things!

Buffy Summers

I would just be concerned that that would be a little redundant?

Lindsey McDonald
06-09-2008, 04:48 PM
I would just be concerned that that would be a little redundant?

I really dont think it would be. It's not a problem when accessing forums from the main page, but via the New Posts section it can be confusing. There could be, for example, a topic titled "Did you like the end of Season 4?" which would be classed under "Season 4". Now, until recently I had not seen the end of Season 4 of Angel, so I would avoid this topic, but I may be happy to discuss the end of Season 4 of Buffy. It's obviously not an urgently important change, but I certainly think it would make the boards more user friendly; especially for people new to the Boards and the 'verse. If it is difficult to implement then feel free to ignore me, but if all it takes is typing in a few letters for each season I really think it would be helpful and would streamline the boards.

And thanks for the re-alignment! Looks great now!

Buffy Summers

Well I meant redundant on the main page? With each forum saying "Buffy" or "Angel".

Lindsey McDonald

Well I meant redundant on the main page? With each forum saying "Buffy" or "Angel".

It's not on the main page that it's a problem. I rarely use the main page anymore, I would be more likely to check on the new posts. I think that the clarity gained from the assigning of the name of the show in that regard is worth the slight redundancy on the main page.

But then that's possibly just me and my way of using the boards. I'm sure many others would use the main page the most, but it's just something that has been irritating me for a while.

Well, I'm saying that even if you personally use new posts, if it looks bad on the main page, which is the real page of the site. I understand what you're saying, and I'm happy for people to give their opinion on it. Just that is my concern that it will look bad on the main page of the site.

Sorry to butt in a bit, but I was just reading and found myself agreeing with Five by Five. I also use New posts and don't know what threads are about Buffy/Angel when they're in separate seasons. I understand though how messy it would look on the main page, but I was just wondering, as I've noticed a new feature on some posts where it says "Question" before the thread title, whether this could be applied to threads in the Seasons forum? So before the thread title in a buffy season forum it would say "Buffy:". Just an idea, I'm not sure if this is possible though, as I don't know much about forums!

Or you know what would be cooler still? You know those little icons that appear next to each post in the new posts list? If one could assign an icon like that to each parent forum so that when a post from it appears on the new posts list it could immediately be identified as coming from that forum. Too bad there wasn't a way to do that.

Don't know if this is a good place to suggest it, but since I'm spending most of my time here or on Facebook, wouldn't it be great to make a group on Facebook for Buffy Boards? Anyone who wanted to display their identity would then be able to do that, and we might even get more people to come and join the Boards as well.

The only suggestion I have would be to maybe shrink the main page down a little bit. It's pretty long at the moment and takes a while to scan down the various sections.

Maybe you could have the various Buffy season forums inside a single Buffy forum on the front page and the same idea for Angel. Then combine those two forums with the Firefly, Dollhouse and Comics forums to form a complete Whedonverse area of the main page.

So rather than...

Buffy
Season 8
Season 7
Season 6
etc...

Angel
After the Fall
Season 5
Season 4
etc...

and further down the page...

Dollhouse
Firefly
Comics
Whedonverse

You would just have as the top section of the main page...

Buffy
Angel
Firefly
Dollhouse
Comics
General Jossness

And individual forums for each season of the two main shows on their own pages.

Make any sense or have I just explained that REALLY badly? ;)

Blondie Bear
07-03-2008, 06:39 PM
You can manually collapse the sections by clicking on the little arrows in the top right corner of each main heading. Then you can look only at the ones you're interested in and not have to scroll past the ones you're not.

Okay, just seen what you were talking about and that's nearly what I meant but not quite. When you close the section it hides everything within it, so you can't see last post details or anything like that. It's fine for shrinking the main page down but looks pretty drab when used. I was meaning to still be able to see main Buffy and Angel forums on the front page with the various season sub-forums inside them, similar to how the Buffy Boards School has the various sub-forums, such as Social Studies and so on, tucked away inside there at the moment.

I've just realised that there is already a page that lists the individual seasons of Buffy here (http://www.buffy-boards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=13) and the same thing for Angel here (http://www.buffy-boards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12) so I'd actually not be causing as much hassle as I figured. I imagined it would mean not only altering the main page but also creating additional pages for the seasons. So I'm being less of a pain in the arse than I thought by suggesting this in the first place. ;)

I know that this is probably not the kind of suggestion that you are looking for, but the "Sorting Tome" thread now has 559 entries. Is there some reason to save all of those outdated requests. All of the ones more than a couple of months old have been processed by now. If the first 400 or more entries were either stored in a file somewhere or deleted altogether, would there be any real loss?

Buffy will be away from the boards intermittently for a bit. This doesn't mean your suggestions are being ignored. They are being considered and discussed.

There will however be a delay to the answers at this time in most cases.

We keep it as a record of who was sorted where. What's the difference if it's 400 posts?

Blondie Bear agrees: There are a lot of threads that I think could stand a purging to help make sure we don't run over bandwidth again.

Having larger threads that no one is reading doesn't affect bandwith usage.

I've been thinking that it might be a good idea to weed out some of the registered users who haven't been around in a dog's age--like since 2002. Not only should it free up some bandwidth, but it could also open up some much-coveted usernames that are taken but not actually being used. Maybe pick a date and delete anyone who hasn't logged in after that date.

Edit:

Having larger threads that no one is reading doesn't affect bandwith usage.

See, I don't know what eats up bandwidth and what doesn't. It seemed like humongous threads would take up space on the server and make things more clunky, but I could be wrong. You know better than I do, boss lady. :)

To answer the non-active users & bandwidth suggestion, the non-active users don't actually use up any bandwidth. :)

It's the amount of traffic here & just the sheer number of people visiting, posting, searching etc that takes up bandwidth, basically the amount of data transferred. We're just so popular! :D

Bandwidth in Web Hosting

In website hosting, the term "bandwidth" is often used to describe the amount of data transferred to or from the website or server within a prescribed period of time. Another more specific phrase used for this meaning of bandwidth is monthly data transfer.

Web hosting companies often quote a monthly bandwidth limit for a website, for example 500 gigabytes per month. If the total amount of data downloaded from the website in a particular month reaches this limit, the hosting company may shut off further public access to the site.

Would it be possible to implement a method of filtering the New Posts page? I ask, because the Slaying Practice section has become ridiculously popular lately, and the numerous games and such make it difficult to find real new posts. Is there a way of doing this already?

Hmm I think when you logged in you could go in to Slaying Practice (or whichever forum(s)) and under forum tools select 'mark forum as read' - then select the 'new posts' link. I can't say for sure if it would work or not but it's worth a try if it irritates you.

I was just pondering along my own thoughts about this - and wondered what you thought.

Okay, this is gonna sound completely geeky. From looking through the Buffy/Angel Book threads quite a few people seem interested in the books, as I am myself. & I wondered weather anyone would be interested in picking one Buffy/Angel books every so often, say a month as everyone has personal lives etc, and reading it as a group. Well obviously not as group, individually, and having like a group discussion about our thoughts on it? :)

Anyway! I was wondering if it'd be possible to get some more Spike/Buffy avatars on the couples section? It seems awfully skewed to the Bagel shippers!! :) that would be fabuloso!! :)

I can't help you on the "fatal error" message I'm afraid, another mod will have to let you know what's going on there! However, if you'd like to see any new avatars your best bet is to post the pictures you'd like in the Buffy Boards Gallery (http://www.buffy-boards.com/gallery/index.php), and they will be looked at during the next round of avatar updates :)

EDIT:
Comments on this post
Airam agrees: I've actually been a good girl and diligently adding pics to the gallery... any idea when the next avatar update might be?

That's good to hear, then all we can do is wait! It all depends on when the time is there, every couple months they usually happen. You might want to try looking in the "Buffy Cast" section for avatars as well, you may be able to find some there :)

Can I ask what exactly you were typing in for your search?

Wasn't there a BB blog on the BB myspace page somewhere?

Oh... I'm not sure... I shall have to have a look. I just thought maybe a kind of blog on here which people can write in. Hmmm... I don't know, i just sort of thought it may be a good idea.

Thanks though, i'll go check it out!

What do you have in mind? A group blog that we can all post to? I think we're kind of covered by the forum and the newsletter. Or do you have a specific theme in mind?

I was just thinking, maybe a blog which we can have on our profile. Something which people can go and read if they want, and then this could maybe lead to some sort of Blog of the month idea or something. No specific theme, just general things or whatever people want to write about.

Hm. Sounds like an interesting idea. You might want to go post it in the Suggestion Box; I think that's where things like this go. Buffy Summers might have too much to do to implement it right away, even if she likes the idea, but it won't hurt to suggest it.

Oh right... I got the wrong place again. Thats waht i thought this thing was... a suggestion sort of place. Damn! ha ha...

Maybe she will see it here or it could be moved or something. That would probably be better because then there won't be two of the same thing.

Either way thanks, i thought people might think it was a stupid idea, but i am a huge fan of blogging and so i thought maybe it would be cool if there were one on here.

Nope! Angel Investigations is for technical issues. The Suggestion Box is a thread in (I think) the Buffy Boards News section.

There were blogs at one time, but they were discontinued as people didn't use them much.

The idea of connecting them to a profile page however is an interesting one.

It's kind of a cool coincidence you mention this at this at this particular time.

The staff is working on something which may be able to incorporate this idea. I'll contact that project's boss for you.

Consider it under consideration.

Angel Investigations is also the forum for site feedback.

I have a question/suggestion about the karma levels. How far up do they go? I've seen that more and more member have reached the one '5x5', which seems to be the highest. If it's not, just ignore this, but if it is, it would be nice to make some new karma levels, or distribute the old ones a bit better, so that not everyone is at the top level. Because that's kind of boring.

There's some really cute titles for the lowest levels, but nobody ever sees them, because we're all too sweet to give negative karma. ;) We should just move them all up a few levels.

But no wait...wouldn't work. It would be like suddenly demoting everybody.

We had to rack our brains coming up with those ones. You should post some title suggestions in case we ever go for that. :)

I would like to volunteer to be a negative karma receptacle just so we can see the titles.

That's OK Scobro, no need to take one for the team.

I just researched. I thought there were more, but from 0 going down it's...

You'll never do it because its a Buffy forum but I would love a charmed section.

Also have you thought about having icons below the avatar to act as rewards for certain things like good speller, Helpful member etc etc

Okay, generally, I think degraation wouldn't be that bad. People would still have the same amount of points. It just means something else. I've been racking my brain for karma levels, and here are the ones I came up with(not necessarily in that order):

has defeated the First Evil
survived the apocalypses
is King/Queen of the Slayers
is beyond good and evil

okay, I hope these didn't totally suck.

Me and Cangel have just been talking about which dorm is better in IRC when we came up with this.

Is it at all possible to have like a student exchange type thing going on for people who would be willing to participate in broadening there minds about other dorms.

Say for like a period of 2 weeks they become part of a different house to sample there culture.

Me and Cangel thought it would be an immensely fun thing to do.

Plus it will prove VH is the best :P

I know a few years back one of the houses did have an open house where all members could access it. It's an interesting idea, Buffy would decide obviously.

I can I just ask, will this just be an opinion poll? I mean realistically is anyone going to go into a new house and say it's better than their own?

Yes!! I am nomadic by nature. The idea of planting roots scares me.

Oh! I just thought of an idea!! yeah, I got an idea!

I have a small suggestion, though it's probably just about me having too high standards, but anyway...

It always bugs me a little when I read a thread title like "Why did Spike not go to Buffy" and then only 'season 5'. Could you maybe add something like 'Angel season 5'? This would also be clever spoiler related.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but: Could we have a Spike/Buffy skin that's... less red? I'd love to have those two to look at while browsing the forum, but my eyes are not loving all that red. -- And I think other fans of the pairing would like to have more than one skin to choose from, too.

^(In Irish accent as thick as gravey) She's rigth you know...

Also:

I know it's really far out, but it would be awsome with some Buffy related games. I dunno. Black jack, word rumble, action games, where the one player who gets the highest score/wins would win points for his/hers dorm house. :D

Other than that, I am quite pleased with our lovely dorm.

ALSO: We should have a Dr. Horrible skin, since it's Whedon related.

It would be redundant to name each forum Angel Season One, Angel Season Two etc...if you are concerned about spoilers I would suggest marking that particular forum read by double clicking on it's icon before you hit the new posts button, or browsing the season forums the usual way instead of using new posts.

Sorry, this is a board for discussing Buffy and Angel, not an arcade. We've already exhausted the bandwith on the bigger account I just switched us to, so adding an arcade would just eat the bandwith up even faster.

As for skins, we add as we can, and with what our artists feel like creating and have good source material for. Doctor Horrible is in the works.

So today is the 3rd time in a week that I've run out of reputation to give out, and as we all (probably) know when that happens we get the message that we've given too much out in the past 24 hours... I think the rep feature is a really useful tool when you just want to write a short note of agreement or just a short comment saying whatever rather than replying with a one sentence post... anyway, I've just come accustomed to using it and when I run out, I'll forget sometimes and still go to click it and that error message pop up and its just like, "doh!' lol. Just wanted to suggest maybe upping the limit or wondering if that was even a possibility. Chances are maybe its a technical thing or you guys have a completely valid reason to have a limit set, just thought i'd put it out there in case, and cause I'm kinda curious about it :)
