Discuss this funny episode here!

I'd have to say my favorite part of this enitre episode is the opening scene with Spike on the rooftop making Angel's dialogue. It's freaking great!

I think everyone will agree with you there SB.
Pure hilarity.

I love the double cross too.

Not the greatest Angel episode but definitely funny.

Not just this episode but this season. That is definitely one of my favorite scenes in season 1. I really enjoyed this episode overall. We get to see Oz which is a major plus. Anyways for the episode itself I found it really funny and dramatic. First Spike's scene, hilarious. The torture scenes too although they were dark it was still funny to think that Spike would trust another vampire with getting the ring of Amarra. Very stupid on Spike's part and very easy to laugh at! Doyle's and Cordy scenes were nice aswell, but Spike's hair catching on fire, on top of everything else surrounding his characters actions in this episode he was definitely the best part for me. One thing I didn't like was Angel's constant need to ruin his chances of happiness to go on and fight for the helpless. He still could have done that... with the ring in my opinion but it shows how much he wants to 'seek redemption' Although not the smartest thing, I did love the look visually of the scene on the roof at the end. Great episode.

I too must give love to the rooftop scene, its so funny and a real highlight of the episode. This was one of the first episodes of Angel i ever saw and i have a real soft spot for it. JM is really good in this ep and the torture scenes give real insight into Angel's character and emotions. We learn that the need for forgivness is Angels core motivation. I think that remains fairly constant throughout the entire series. He's also so hurt that Buffy didn't bring the ring herself or at least send a message with it - He didn't see the ring as the message itself - that she trusted him with this very powerful artefact. On a side note - the torturing vampire hired by Spike always reminds me of Anthony Edwards (from Top Gun and ER).

Do you think Angel was right in destorying the ring? I always felt that wasn't a good choice, because you never know just when he'd need it!

It drove me nuts that Angel destroyed the ring. Partly because it was a gift, and partly because his reasoning was BULL. It wasn't like he had to use it all the time, and if he was aware of the possibility of "forgetting those in the dark," it would be less likely that it'd happen. I think he just likes to make things harder on himself than they really need to be.

1.03 "In The Dark"

A fantastic episode.

And the classic girl running in the alley, scared. It would be cheesy, but instead, something great happens. We don’t have to sit around watching Angel beat the crap out of this guy. Well, we do. But we don’t have to do the great hero thing. We get….SPIKE! His speech, impersonating the two is fantastic. One of the funniest scenes of the show. And evil Spike’s here, promising surprises. And oh, will there be some. Can’t wait!

Roll the ZOMGSafkjfshaf credits.

OZ! Man, we have all these guests today! Cordelia is still great. I love you, Cordy. Also, Doyle talking about their “vacation” together is hysterical! Their relationship is still beautiful. Oz! And Oz is still funny, that’s good. And Cordelia’s over excitedness is so great! Oz and Angel are quite the pair: expressionless. At first, of course. We all know we love ‘em.

And here we are. The Ring of Amara. I love the whole premise, and how Angel could have everything he’s wanted. And Angel hides the ring. Of course. And more Cordy/Doyle. Great stuff. Agel practicing…not sure is a little, um, weird. And Spike is back! I love evil Spike oh so much. And I always love the Spike/Angel fights. And Spike so loses. Love it. Their exchange is very fun.

Cordelia gets to stay at Doyle’s! Yippee! Squeal! I love ‘em! I love them together. End of story. And more Buffy references! Lol. I find this amusing, cause I love Cordy.

I don’t like this Rachel and Lenny story, so can one of them die already? LOL. Sorry, I really don’t like it, not one bit. Back to Spike! Now!

And back to Spike. He’s killing an innocent, being his old evil self. And I love his sarcasm here. His running and going quietly line is very funny. And, of course, he has a plan. That Spike. Finally catching on. But, wait a minute. I thought vamps couldn’t breathe. Say it with me: PLOT HOLE! So, Angel’s captured even though he doesn’t have to breath, and now we have Marcus. A frickin’ creepy dude. And I mean really, really creepy. His thing about liking children? Terrifying! And Spike’s sarcastic voice rules over them all, again. I love him asking “What do you want?” And Spike calling Buffy slutty was nice. And I love Spike just messing with Angel. It’s absolutely fun to watch!

And the Spike and Cordy confrontation! Great scene! Cordy with that crossbow looks hot lol.

Okay, now the torturing is getting really old and boring, just Marcus is creepy. Real, real creepy. I hate how all the places Marcus sticks things in, they grow back and show no sign of ever being hurt. Say it with me: PLOT HOLE!

Doyle and Cordy find the ring and go to Spike, without the ring. They say, show us Angel, we give you ring. So, they do. They see Angel. Spike says I want the ring. So, so interesting lol. No, really, it is! And ZOMGF, it’s Oz! I knew we liked you! You save beloved Cordy and Doyle. Oh, yeah, and Angel. Spike doesn’t get the ring. Again. I like that hehe.

But, apparently, Marcus did want the ring, and he has it. Watch out, children. Spike being pissed and talking to himself is hilarious, and I love it. Back to Marcus, and he’s weird. Choosing his target, is he? Also, how do they know Marcus has the ring? PLOT HOLE. Okay, Angel flinging into Marcus and burning up looks amazing. Great! Great fight, too! And Marcus is dead. I love my show. Angel enjoying the sun is very great and iconic. It’s what he wants. Has he gotten forgiveness? Has he been rewarded?

And Angel’s decision to not use the ring is amazingly well written. I love it.

Overall: A uber-fantastic episode featuring evil Spike and awesome Oz. It has great moments, and plenty of character development for Angel, as well as the Cordy/Doyle relationship. A chillingly scary villain, Marcus, who “likes” children is showcased in this episode, and Spike loses, again. A few plot holes, but nothing to serious. And the Rachel/Lenny storyline is a bummer and a bore, but it’s okay, everything else makes up for it. No wonder this episode was written by Doug Petrie, one of the best on both shows. Right behind Joss.

9.5/10

Quotes:

Spike: (impersonating Angel) How can I thank you, you mysterious black clad knight hunk of a thing? No need, little lady. Your tears of gratitude are enough for me. See, I was once a bad ass vampire, but love, and a pesky curse, defanged me. Now, I’m just a big fluffy puppy with scary teeth. No, not the hair. Never the hair. But there most be someway I could show my appreciation. No, helping those in need’s my job. And, working up a load of sexual tension and bouncing off like a magnificent poof is truly thanks enough. I understand. I have a nephew’s who gay. Say no more! Evil’s a foot. And I’m almost out of that nancy boy hair gel I like, so much. Quickly, too the Angel mobile! Away!

Cordelia: Oz? Oh my god! Oz! I am so happy to see you! Good old Oz. Oz! Oz.

Oz: (about Angel) Does he have a hat and gun?

Cordelia: Just fangs.

Doyle: They usually like this?

Oz: No, we’re usually laconic.

Cordelia: I don’t think Oz appreciated being called “my little bam-bam” all night.

Angel: The Gem of Amara stays with me!

Spike: Why? Because you’re vampire detective? What’s next? Vampire cowboy? Vampire fireman? Oh, vampire ballerina.

Angel: I do like to work with my legs.

Spike: I had a good plan. A laid out one. But, I got bored.

Cordelia: And there was this whole thing about an arm in a box.

Doyle: An arm in a box?

Marcus: What do you want, Angel?

Angel: Are you gonna torture me or just bore me to death?

Marcus: A little of both.

Angel: I want forgiveness.

Spike: Look out! Here comes Spike!

Oz: You’re….incredibly pale.
