View Full Version : Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

Over the last few days, every time I tried to get on this site I got the message, ' Bandwidth Limit Exceeded '.
It took a while to find out what that meant, thing is I didn't know if the owners / administrators of the site had been notified.
*
Hence the question, is there a way of contacting the people who run this site in the event of such a dire emergency.
*
The other cause of my concern was, when I asked about the problem, the message was that Buffy-Boards - An Angel and Buffy Forum (http://www.Buffy-boards.com) didn't exist.
Ever noticed, bad things happen at the worst time?.

Actually i believe that the server contacts the owner of the forum theirselves to let them know that the bandwith has been exceeded... also there are pleanty of Moderators and Second in commands that have ways of getting in touch with Buffy Summers theirselves....
This problem really doesn't happen that often and is usually solved in a matter of a few days, sometimes less than that, it just really depends on if the owner has time to take away from her busy schedule to be able to fix the problem, I believe it costs money to have the board have as much bandwidth as it does have
The Best thing to do usually in these situations is just to sit back and wait a while as most of the mods and admins to run hectic lives outside of the forums and they usually try to tend to things as fast as possible.... it probley wouldn't help getting tons of emails from members about the problem it would probley only slow them down more.

Stupid question, but what exactly does 'Bandwidth Limit Exceeded ' mean?

It means that too many people have tried to access the website. When you rent server-space you usually also agree to a maximum amount of data that can be accessed per month by visitors. This is done so that you don't take too much toll on the server, which you're sharing with some other websites. The amount of data you're allowed to have accessed is called the bandwidth. Like Angels baby101 said, when it's exceeded the host that owns the server usually goes for either one of two options. Either they notify the one who rents the server space and tell them they have exceeded the bandwidth and they'll automatically bill them with a higher fee for that month. Or the owner of the server blocks the site, as its limit has been reached; they usually then notify the owner of the website with the option of upgrading their rented package to one with a higher bandwidth either that or they ask the owner if they're willing to pay for some extra bandwidth that month only.
Social Suicide agrees: ah, okay, thx. Should we maybe offer to donate or something to help the site?
There is a 'Make a Donation' button, to be able to donate towards the running costs of the boards, at the bottom of every page. :)
I know running costs for a board like this can be expensive, so I am sure any amount, no matter how big or small would be greatly appreciated. :)

I will be donating in the middle of the month. For people with paypal, even donating a few dollars would really help keep our wonderful Buffy home going. :)

I already donated :) But not much, I really don't have any money, being a student and not having a job. But still, I hope it helps, and this forum really earns it.

As far as im aware Buffy Summers would get a message immediately and I believe she also gets a message every time someone tries to access the site (Which as you can imagine, fills up her inbox!)
If the site does go down, one of the mods(Prob more) will contact Buffy Summers, so there's no need to have all the members emailing her as well! (And Mods are from all different time zones so thats covered :))

That is always something I've been meaning to do, as soon as my credit card is no longer maxed out, I will!
Anyone knw roughly how much it cost to run a site? I know any amount would help, but would be nice to know a figure to help with?
Edit:
Oh and remember Buffy Summers posted on note saying she is busy at the moment, so if the site does go down, just keep that in mind that it could take a bit longer then normal to get back to us!

Instead of just donating, wouldn't it make more sense to have the shoutbox taken away again?

I wouldn't consider it an emergency, or dire.

Honestly its not really the shoutbox that is really doing it... Its about how many people visit the site in general... Not to mention all the threads and posts Hense the reason why they dont want a bunch of Picture threads or Chat threads, the shout box is ideal because it gets cleaned out and doesn't take up a huge amount of space....
But in reality it really is just the amount of members and guests that visit the site, it racks up totals....

As was mentioned above, Buffy Summers is extremely busy at the moment and, as the site owner and admin, is the only staffer with the ability to take down the shoutbox. Thus, even if it was the best way of saving bandwidth, there wasn't anyone around who could do it.

you know I bet if every active member even agreed to donate a $1 a month it would help. A $1 as a thank you for the many many hours of enjoyment we get from these boards I think is MORE than fare. I know I personally will be donating more this month..I was going to ask the question of where I could but it was already asked and answered and personally I am more than willling to help keep the site up. But I do think it would be cool if the really active memberes just donated a $1...ooooooooooo we could maybe do A BB drive where everyone who donates threw paypal (and there is a way to keep track of each donation) in a month goes into a hat and we can draw a name for a prize maybe???? I'd be willing to purchase the prize? If the mods like that idea contact me and let me know I would be more than willing to buy a buffyverse related prize :)

Honestly i'd love to donate i'd be more than happy to....
If i had my job still but due to not working i barely have any money at all in my banking account anymore, maybe after my taxes come in but until then i'm sorry but i'm strapped. I'm trying to save every little quarter i find for the baby.... but it does sound like a great idea about donating a dollar each or something i mean its not like most of us dont waste our money on other stupid things....

And I don't know about others, but here in Germany I think you need to be 18 to legally use paypal (that's when I go my account there). So not everyone could donate due to being underaged (and I'm sure, if I was still a minor and asked my parents if I could donate some money to an internet site, they would've said no).

To be honest I had no idea that the donations were done through paypal, so a major thanks to EDB for drawing my attention to the feature :)
I won't be able to make a huge donation, but whenever I get a little but of extra pocket change I'll try and give a little donation here and there. These really are awesome boards, if there's a way I can help keep it going I'm all for it!

yeah but thats where the prize incentive would come in for those that are able...I think it would be a fun way to earn some money for this board each month...I mean if the incentive was something desirable...technically it would be like a raffle...I guess. I dunno I am looking around for a desirable prize that I could affrod to donate to the drive plus count me in for a $10 donation this month to the site I know its not much but its something right?

I don't know why but all this talk of donations doesn't seem quite appropriate nor does the idea of doing it for a prize.

I agree with BotD; isn't having the boards running smoothly a prize enough?

I knew there was something I was forgetting to do. We talked about donating in Merrick but it slipped my mind. I just donated there, it's only fair to pay our way when BS is providing us with this little haven.

I really appreciate everyone that donates to the site - it's really great of you all. :)
BUT I want to say to everyone that donating is not necessary and please I don't want anyone to donate that can't afford it or who hasn't asked their parents first if they are underage. :) I'm sorry about that stupid leap year day and the bandwith getting exceeded - I though I had February covered but it didn't end up that way and I apologize :(
