I am SURE there has to be a post on this somewhere, but I can't find it.

In the Angel episode, there a couple of things that have always bugged me.

Clem stated one, but I did notice a couple of months ago that she does say, "Come on" when they're running for the door.

But, one thing that has ALWAYS bugged me is WHY Angel turns into a vampire when they're kissing the first time.
I thought it might be the cross, but I've watched and watched and he comes NO WHERE near it.
I'm trying to convince myself that he did it on purpose to scare her off, but even that seems like AWFUL timing, even for him. Why not stop kissing her and say they need to talk? Or explain things before he kissed her, like when she asks him HOW much older he is. Something other than scaring the wits out of the poor kid.

Besides, it doesn't seem later like this was his "plan". He gets all broody about it...which isn't out of character, he broods about over cooked broccoli that he's not even eating. Still, I wish there was more explanation for WHY he had to get all bumpy right then.
Maybe it only bugs me because most of the time he seems to AVOID going vampire whenever he possibly can. Even as Angelus he seems to like to be "normal" looking.

I think it was about losing control. He knew being with Buffy was a bad idea, but he really wanted to, and he kept telling her they couldn't be together, but then she came on to him, and VOILA! confused vampire freaks out.

Also wasn't he a little hungry at the time. Angel has got better at dealing with the demon within. He never used to get close to people without biting them. He actually states he wanted to kill Buffy. The Demon is always there but he has to control it.

I think on some level, it's attraction. On a deeper level, physical attraction. Hasn't anyone let the 'animal' out during some... uh... hot romance?! :)

i think that it was a combination or both the cross and him losing control. Here's how I see it. Angel has always been good about being able to control "the demon within" there have been times where he has grabbed onto crosses, stuck his hand in holy water, withstood limited amounts of sunlight, etc. but what I think happened is that when he started kissing Buffy he was able to control the demon but as it got more intense in the kissing he began to think of himself has a normal human being and therefore let his guard down. That there in turn gave the cross the power to make him push away and vamp out.

It seems to me this would be the first time he'd been close to a girl, never mind a super hot slayer in a long time, he's bound to hunger for her in the vampiric sense

he lost his soul because being with buffy was his perfect moment of happiness. just kissing buffy for the first time might have made him so happy that, as others have stated, he just lost control. thats my theory anyway

I always assumed he did it on purpose. He was getting close to Buffy, actually falling in love with her and she was starting to have feelings for him but she didn't really know him. And Angel being his broodingly, self destructive self thought that she would never love him once she knew what he was. So he was probably angry, more with himself than anyone else, so to prove that he was right (and that she wouldn't love him once she knew) he showed her what he was in the worse possible way.

That probably doesn't make much sense but I know what I mean lol

Didn't they make a thing of her having the cross? I just thought she was wearing it round her neck, so when he let his guard down and forgot that she was wearing it he got too close. Yeah, he can grab hold of a mighty big crucifix when he's concentrating, but when he doesn't know it's there his reactionary demon instinct is to vamp out. Although my memory of the scene is a little fuzzy, so if she wasn't wearing the cross around her neck then you can just ignore me.

They made a thing of her having the cross at the end of the episode. They kiss on the dance floor and then she asks if he's ok and he says ''It's just..'' and then she finishes by saying ''Painful. I'll see you around.'' as she's walking off the camera pans down and shows the cross shaped burn on his chest were the cross he gave her touched his skin :)

I think that the reason why he went all 'bumpy' is because she's probably the first actual person that he was interacting with and to top it off, that he was attracted to. We hear Buffy say in a season 3 episode that she asks him if them being close bothers him, and he tells her that he's gonna lose control. I think when he did go all 'bumpy' it was because of 'Angelus' and other part of him that he has control everyday that he's around actual people and probably more so with Buffy. I think at that time he didn't know how to do that or that maybe he had to. I think that sometimes some of us on these boards forget that he has to control something inside of him so that he can have whatever type of relationships with humans.

I think that sometimes some of us on these boards forget that he has to control something inside of him so that he can have whatever type of relationships with humans.

But that's just simply not true. He doesn't have to control anything that a normal human doesn't have to control. Angelus is, by definition, a soulless, guiltless, sadist. With a soulful, guilt endowing soul, Angelus simply cannot exist. Angel struggles with the memories, sure. He struggles with the fact that he can only consume blood, fine. But he doesn't struggle with urges to kill or hurt people any more than you or I. He couldn't eat a person after he was turned - he sipped off a dead body all of once. The only thing he has to worry about losing control of is his rationale when around Buffy. One moment of giving in to temptation and he could be, in the words of Cordelia Chase, "Rawr" again. He neither new that, or struggled with it in season 1.

However, that's not to say Angel wasn't struggling with a ton of emotional, control, and bumpy issues at that point. He just didn't have the monster inside him rearing up at physical intimacy. It was close proximity to a cross while having his guard down and being all kinds of confused.

But the point is is that he's being worked up. The entire time they're in close proximity he has to deal with hearing her heart beat and feeling the blood run through her veins and that's probably multiplied by 100 when they start kissing. He still has control himself from taking a bite out of a living human. He went all bumpy because he had never experienced that before, kissing a human and what that must feel like. No matter what he does or who he's around, he has to control himself everyday.

I'd agree that what Angel has to contend with is more than the average human. His bloodlust seems more profound than ordinary human hunger or temptation. So he has all the temptations of an ordinary human plus the bloodlust of a demon.

Seriously.... Angel is always brooding 'bout something..Whether it's broccoli, daisies, whool socks, or spam.... (none of this happened on screen, but we know daisies makes him frown)

My thought on him going bumpy: "Should I go bumpy? She could be afraid. Ooh but then I'd change back, and maybe she'd accept me, sleep with me, I'd loose my soul, she'd kill me, I'd come back, and we'll love forever..good plan.. I'm so smart"

I totally agree.... I always theorized that he vamped out 'cause kissing her felt so good he couldn't control himself.
