View Full Version : Thought About The "Top Heavy" Women and Urru's Art

I was talking to my Aunt today about the Angel comics....(because we're weird) and when I mentioned the over busty women in them, her first response was "typical man artist". Which made me go look at the Spike comics Lynch and Urru put out.

Normally, the women aren't "drawn" like that. There are a couple, but it's not like it is in the Angel comics. So, I was able to say, "Nope, I don't think it's just this guy being a guy. Here he has women we DON'T know not all chesty, but in the Angel ones even women we DO know are almost medical miracle worthy."

Then it hit me. Maybe this has to do with the "alternate Hell dimension" thing. The same thing that's making Nina all nutty. (Gwen has always been a bit more well endowed.) I doubt it, but it also could be part of the STORY. How this dimension messes with people. Maybe something like the "Dawn Storyline" where we all go "OHHHHH" later.

It just seems weird that Urru WOULDN'T be doing that in comics that he didn't have to run past Joss, but now, when it counts he'd be going all crazy with it.
I also wonder about the drawing of Angel. Because those are the ones I've questioned in the books. Everyone else (other than the sudden breast implants) hasn't bugged me much.
Until now, I've chalked it up to...oh well, I couldn't draw the same guy over and over and over 75 times a book and have them ALL look the same. Especially those small squares.
But, then I started thinking, maybe some of those pictures of Angel were left intentionally more vague so that we didn't catch on that he wasn't a vampire before we were supposed to.

I quickly scanned through the art and compared the Spike comics to the Angel ones and the it's CLEAR the man can do quite amazing and consistant detail. Which led me to ponder if maybe there is a REASON he's not. Especially on Angel, himself.

Or, I guess he could be getting poorer eyesight or has bad lighting in his new place. But, it did cause me to wonder if maybe there is a REASON the art is different that we just don't know yet.

It would be hilarious if the boobs were the 'Big' bad this season, but I just don't see it happening.

Urru's women sometimes make me think of someone like Frank Cho (http://www.libertymeadows.com/). Classic American comic book cheesecake.

But yeah, we know this doesn't really appeal to Joss and his aesthetic or what he wanted to put out there. He gave specific instructions to Karl Moline to make Fray look like a "normal" girl, not a busty supermodel.

Urru's Angel stuff...it's just not pleasing to the eye, as narrative, comic art. The facial detail and basic emotions, expressions are just not there consistently. It makes it harder to relate to the characters.

It's the girls in this comic that I have the problem with. Not the big-chested-ness, which I actually didn't notice, apart from Spike's, um, 'friends'. It's the facial features...or lack thereof... that's making me mad. It seems to me that Urru just doesn't care about the main females (Gwen, Illyria and Nina). He seems to concentrate more on the men, and while I admit that Angel and Wes aren't always consistant, they're a damn site better than the girls. Sometimes Nina looks like a five year old drew her, with two black dots for eyes and a line for a mouth. I hate the art for After the Fall, and I was really hoping that Urru would be replaced after this arc. But now I see he's going to be doing the Spike arc this June, and I just want to hurl.

Issue 5 is the last issue by Franco Urru. Issues 6-8 are going to be done by different artists and issues 10-the end (14?) will be by a different team (Nick Runge and Art Lyon), while Franco Urru works on Spike: After the Fall.

I like your fan-theory of Hell making boobs bigger, but I doubt that's it.

I guess I just WISH it were it.
I'm not really impartial in this area. I feel for the guy. And I DO feel like he seems to "get" Lynch, which amazes me.
You wouldn't BELIEVE the amount of time I have to use dealing with people who "say" what they want, but they don't really KNOW what they want. People who don't even understand which colors are which. I had a lady say she wanted "Fushia" flowers on a commission. I ASKED AND ASKED her to send me color swatches because it was too hard to explain colors in an email. She wouldn't. Sure enough, she thought fushia was what I can only assume was really chartreuse and changing pink to green was not fun.

And, comics are still new to me. Even in the shows I use the fight scenes to go potty. I wish they'd get into a fight in the comics and just make a small square that says, "Fight Ensues"...just to not take up my time with panels of fighting. I think it would be easier on the artist too. No need to worry with the 10 panels where people are distorted and tiny.

But, I WILL say, he doesn't seem to always draw women so busty. So, there has to be SOME reason.
