Here's a variation on an old theme: Before the soul, before the chip, did Buffy ever hate Spike? For that matter, did she ever actually hate ANY vampire, even the Master, besides Angelus? He was the only one that made the business of Slayer vs Vampire personal by stalking and torturing her friends. As for all of the others, it seemed to me that she just looked upon the whole thing as a job that had to be done and she was the one who had to do it. Completely impersonal.

I think you have a really good point here. I mean even in the season one episode 'Angel', Buffy says something like 'I've killed a lot of vampires. I've never hated one before' which implies even at that point Angel was the only one she could hate because she was personally involved, just as she was when he became Angelus.

I was going to say that after her death in Prophecy Girl she may have hated the Master, but her actions in When She Was Bad seem to show her as more terrified than hateful. Especially when she bursts into tears after destroying his bones.

So no, I don't think she ever did hate Spike. He annoyed her yes, but never hate. Even in Season 4 when his constant hanging around the Scoobies forced them to become personally involved (if not romantic at the time) he more aggravated her than caused her to hate him.

So in answer to your question....no. I don't think she ever did hate Spike :)

No I don't think she did. They were just the inconvience to her Bronzing or whatever else she couldn't do. If she hated every vamp it would have driven her insane. She hated the idea od her job, of her destiny and later herself but I don't think she ever hated the vamps. Any of them

Whatever Buffy's feelings were for Angel, and I agree that she really loved him, she hated Angelus because he was the first vampire who ever attacked her family and friends simply because they WERE her family and friends. He was no random nameless fledgling. Angelus stalked her, spied on her, and even killed the woman her surrogate father loved, simply out of cruelty and malice.

Most importantly, she hated Angelus because he was the exact opposite of her beloved Angel, who she saw as a completely separate person, and she blamed Angelus for taking him away from her.

No she blamed herself for taking Angel away from her, Angelus didn't come back himself. He was the consequence of her actions, intentional or not. I honestly don't think she hated him, she hated what he did but I think Faith had it right, Buffy still dug Angel when he was Angelus. No matter what he was he gave her hope, if Angelus existed it meant she could still get Angel back. How could she hate him, he was the only thing that kept her going?

You're right. How could I have possibly been so wrong? Angelus most certainly kept Buffy going. She had to go to all of her friends and tell them that the man she loved was gone and there was a monster in his place. She had to go to the warehouse to rescue Giles when that monster murdered the girl he was in love with. She had to go to her mother and tell her that she was the Slayer, forcing them into a confrontation that ultimately ended with Buffy going to the library and finding Kendra with her throat slit, going to the mansion to fight the monster who had replaced the man she loved, and ultimately going to Los Angeles to live alone and grieve for the whole summer living alone in a fleabag hotel. He kept her going, alright.

But I could forgive that, every bit of the pain and suffering, the hate and abuse, the pain and torture of the season, but there's one thing that I just can not forgive: Angelus killed Willow's fish. Now, that was just going too far.

If for nothing else, Buffy hated him for that.

In answer to the question in the topic, I don't think Buffy ever really hated Spike or any other vampire. Basically, I agree with what's already been said. It was more like a job for her, the vampires had to be killed. And, yes, Joyce, When She Was Bad definately seemed to show that it was terror and not hate.

I also agree with most of what's been said about Angel/Angelus... Hehe, this was almost a pointless post...

In Becoming Part 2 Buffy and Spike have this exchange:

BUFFY: I hate you.
SPIKE: And I'm all you've got.

but by Lovers's Walk her feelings had mellowed just a little:

Spike: This should be a kick.
Buffy: I violently dislike you.

So maybe she did hate him once upon a time...

I always thought that she was trying to convince herself more than Spike, the same as all of those rants about "You're an evil soulless THING, I could never love you!" and "Ask me again why I could never love you." Then coming to him during the same episode and wanting him to protect Dawn. Buffy's relationship with Spike was a lot of things, from apprehensive and distrusting to grateful for protecting Dawn, all the way to honest love and trust. But she never really hated him, even when they were enemies.

Even though this is true, she could have just been using it as a way to express her dislike. For instance, if she had said, "I hate broccoli," it doesn't mean she has this blinding passion to destroy all of the broccoli in the world. It was more of a figure of speech than anything.

I honestly think that Buffy just disliked him as first. After he helped her in Becoming, she saw him as nothing more than an annoyance until the later seasons. In fact, I think the only villains she truly hated were Glory and The First, just because she had serious doubts that she would kill either of them and they both put the lives of people she loved in jeopardy. I'd say the same for Angelus, but, as other people have said, it seemed like she still loved him even without a soul.

Yeah, you have to pretty much know someone to really hate them.

I think the only time Buffy really took it personally is when he hurt Angel, this might explain her earlier dislike but yeah, I doubt it was truly personal. Any loathing Buffy had later on (season 6) was self loathing.

That's mentioned above, a quote from the season one ep "Angel" I believe. No, I think at the time when they were still enemies and coming to actual blows, Spike didn't really mean enough to Buffy for her to bother actually HATING him. Intense dislike, sure, and even when she said she hated him, I don't think she actually did. Think about it, how many times have you said to someone ", oh, I hate you," and not really meant it? Plus, how could anyone ever HATE Spike, he's hilarious :P

I think the only big bads Buffy ever hated where Caleb, The Master, and Glory, and possibly Angelus. I dont think that buffy could see past the fact that Angel lived somewhere inside Angelus though. She loved Angel too deeply to want to destroy the thing that harbored his being somewhere within. But she did it and only after he changed back to Angel so...yeah. Wow just thinking about that brings tears to my eyes.

Buffy didnt even hate the trio. She was able to see that they were human and tried to save them from Willow even after they had tried to harm her and had killed Tara. The real question is who do we think Buffy harbored the most animosity for? I think it was Glroy.

I think before Buffy's death and resurrection she didn't really think about Spike enough to hate him. She might be intensely annoyed with him, or, as she said, "violently dislike" him, but for the most part, it was out of sight, out of mind. Only when she desperately needed someone--anyone--did she start to have an actual opinion of him, and it manifested as hate, but I think she hated herself more than him. In archetypal terms, though, he's her shadow, which means he IS her--the dark, unacknowledged side of her. So hating him is really hating herself, which she very much did.

i dont think she hated the master. she was just mighty scared of him :P spike however, i think she did hate. for one, she said it to him and two, he tried to kill her and her friends. AND he kidnapped angel to make drusilla strong again. hes done enough to her personally for her to hate him. i think she did

I dont think Buffy hated Vamps. Its like a Rat exterminator, they do a job. How cant you hate a vamp for being a vamp.
It was definetly just a job to her, i think she had the attitude if i dont kill them, they will kill us. So it had to be done.
if a crocodile killed someone, people would go and kill the croc, not cause they hate it, but incase they do it again.

I don't think Buffy hated Spike. In Becoming Part 2 when she says she does I think she's more angry at her situation than she is with Spike but she's takes it oout on him because she can. I think that's how their relationship generally is. Spike always seems to get the brunt of Buffy's angry emotions and even back in season 2 he took it.
