At the first of this episode, when Buffy has the Slayer dream about the Gentlemen: Buffy was sleeping IN CLASS and nobody, as in Riley or even Walsh, bothered to wake her? Also, in "Beer Bad," she grabs a sandwich from another girl who's EATING IN CLASS. Have things changed so much in college that stuff like that is allowed now? If it is, I'm going back to school!

As long as you're discrete when eating then yes its allowed. Sleeping? nope.

At university I had 4 lectures back to back Friday afternoon from 2-6pm so the lecturers allowed us to eat as long as we didn't disturb anyone around us and half way through we were allowed to get up and walk around before starting up again. Bottled water is always allowed unless you slurp loudly or something.

Other times it was a bit more frowned upon but not against the rules.

I fell asleep in class in college once or twice..... The general thing was if you didn't snore or move loudly so attention was drawn to the fact you were sleeping, no one ever told you off and woke you up. Usually it was only your friends that saw you and they weren't exactly gonna hand you over to the Maggie Walsh of your class.

As for sandwich stealing...have you seen the way college professors teach? They get so into their lecture or whatever it is their saying at the time, they would hardly notice sandwich stealing or sandwich eating unless it was on the front row. This was an unfortunate yet decidedly handy fact. Teehee. What I used to do if I was eating and the teacher happened to look my way, the item of food would be quickly hid under a desk and I'd immediately stop chewing. Just in cases. Hehe.

Also, some were quite understanding. If it was an early or an especially long class etc, some really understood that yes, you are going to get hungry and you do need to eat. And as long as you're listening and paying attention they didn't bother too much. But that was only some, haha.

Most of my teachers don't mind if you're eating. I have one that stipulates that if there's "noticeable masticating or crinkling of wrappers," she'll ask us to quit it, but other than that no one really cares. They know our schedules are crazy and we grab food when we can.

I got thrown out of a history class in college back in '74 for sleeping in class. Of course, the real reason the professor got upset was because he'd frequently call my name to try and embarrass me - and I'd repeat verbatim everything he'd just said because I was never really sleeping, just sort of dozing but still listening to his (damned boring) lecture. :coolman:

I used to get in trouble just because I often listen (seriously) with my eyes closed. I told one professor once that if I were really asleep, he wouldn't be able to make himself heard over my snoring. The man just had NO sense of humor.

Haha! Well, we eat in our university lessons alot.. I mean I have back to back lectures and seminars alot of the time, so it tends to be the only time you're not running around and have enough time to eat.
Occasionally our lecturers even eat, so its not so bad- as long as you don't make too much noise!

As for sleeping in lectures- definitely frowned upon at my uni. Apart from in one class where we had our first lecture of a new year with a brand new lecturer on new material- within 5mins of the lecture, someone in the front row was asleep, and it became the focal point of the lecture- the lecturer sat next to him the whole 2hours! He was embarassed when he woke up!

Here in Germany things might be different, but from what I know from my brother nobody really cares what you do in class. There are mostly non-compulsory, but also some compulsory lectures they have, and well, the in the non-compulsory ones people apparently just come and go as they please. And they don't seem to be very disciplined either, my brother told me that once during class, one guy knocked another guy's tooth out because this guy was insulting his girlfriend. Well and the complsory ones, people just get so bored they really sleep and do what they want. According to my brothers the lecturers don't really care, they know they are not the ones who have to write exams so as long as they're spreading the knowledge everything is alright.

we are allowed to eat in 90% of our classes, unless its a computer lab or the professor has a specific issue with it. Otherwise, when else are we going to get some food in? I'm in class for hours at a time with no breaks, and i can't just starve all day.

Oh, and i've seen people sleep in classes... MOST professors will say something, but few just let them, i guess they figure it'll catch up to them when a test comes up and they realize they haven't paid attention to anything that was taught.

Social Suicide is right. The majority of our lectures and seminars, the lecturers/seminar leaders don't seem to care what we do, because we're paying for the priviledge of going to university, so it's up to us what we do when we're there- as long as we're not disturbing other people, you can pretty much do anything the majority of the time... including eat, sleep, play games on your phone, even not turn up- who cares?- it's your own money you're wasting.

I've fallen asleep in lectures many times, and as people have mentioned - as long as you're not obvious about it you generally get ignored/left alone :) and eating was totally allowed as long as it wasn't noisy. Although I'm pretty sure if I;d stolen someone's sandwich, they would've made a bigger deal out of it :D

I try not to sleep in class, but usually do at least 2-3 times a week. I've only been woken up once for it, and that was in a class of about 10 people (my major is pretty small)...never had a teacher tell me I can't eat in class, but I don't think it would be looked upon kindly in some of the small, discussion oriented classes I take. Big lectures are a whole other deal. I've seen someone bring an entire pizza to one of those before!

Well, I'm sorta not old enough for college yet...But in school, we're not allowed to eat, though if you fall asleep you don't get woken up (Is that proper English...?) but usually people don't fall asleep.

i do remember the shock going from high school to college, because i went to a catholic high school. Uniform, no food, no drinks, no gum chewing, raise your hand to speak etc.

Now its like, sure bring lunch, chew gum all you want, have open discussions... it blew my mind lol.

Not quite in college yet (believe me, not for lack of wanting... total senioritis case), but in my experience it depends on the teacher. One teacher I had actually got us all to get up, turn the lights off, and turn the clock ahead six hours when a girl fell asleep for the upteenth time, so that she'd be really disoriented when she woke up. We were on our way to conduct class from an empty room nearby when she woke up and ruined our fun... it was almost tragic. Personally, I try not to fall asleep in class very much, though the last time it happened I did wake up about ten minutes before the end of class. Then I remembered how much of a joke the class was, put on a lullaby and went back to sleep.

As for eating, most teachers know how disgusting the school food is, and that it takes us our whole lunch break to go out and get good food sometimes. Mostly they're flexible about such things. Mostly these days, they're more concerned with cell phones and mp3 players than sleeping and eating.

I'm too worried about drooling to fall asleep!

Nah when I was at uni I think I fell asleep once, but I was still suffering the affects of the night before... I probably shouldnt have even gone to my lecture! Most of the lectures had so many people in them that I doubt the teachers noticed. Obviously tutes and labs were different and we were all too busy working to do anything else. My high school was great, they pretended to be strict but they really wernt! Food was hid under tables but it was still in full view of the teacher anyway.

Mostly they dont care as long as you arnt disturbing anyone. It is only your own education that suffers.
