"The top ten things we'd like to see in Buffy and Angel comics."

IFMagazine has a list of Buffyverse characters that they'd like to see appear in Buffy Season 8 and Angel: After The Fall.



Even in the face of the recent revelation that Joss Whedon would broom the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER comic book continuity to make a movie, we here at iF MAGAZINE still have needs and wants when it comes to what we would like to see happen both in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: SEASON EIGHT and ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL. What follows is a top ten list of the characters we want to see again and the situations we think would make for nifty reading.

1.) THE RETURN OF TARA & JOYCE

If bad guys can come back why not good guys? Killing Tara off was the biggest mistake ever made on BUFFY and she needs to come back somehow. There is of course the rumor that Tara was supposed to return in season seven, but because of conflicts it never happened; so there’s no time like the present to bring back Willow’s number one girl.

Joyce could come back ala Lucy Hanover from the Christopher Golden novels. She could check in on her girls and act as a periodic spiritual guide when the slayerettes need it.

2.) ANYANKA COMES BACK - A RETURN TO A DOPPELGANGLAND TYPE WORLD FOR A FEW ISSUES
Would D’Hoffryn really leave one of his favorite demons dead at the bottom of a crater? I think not. Whether he would bring Anya back to make her pay for disobeying him, or because he adores her, she should come back. Her return could pave the way for a Doppelgangland type story across several issues like ‘What if Buffy never came back from the dead?’

3.) BUFFY CROSSES PATHS WITH RILEY FINN AND SAM AGAIN
Since the Slayer army is pretty much doing the same type of job that Riley, his wife Sam and the government agents are doing, it stands to reason that they will collide. I’m not saying Buffy should get back with Riley, because I never liked him as a match for her, but they should butt heads a bit here and there.

4.) OZ COMES BACK INTO THE FOLD
Stealing an idea from novelist Christopher Golden, Oz should come back as a man in control of his wolf and join the fight by the side of Buffy and her armies. Oz was a great character and he too deserves some more coverage.

5.) BUFFY FINDS OUT SPIKE IS ALIVE & HAS TO DEAL WITH HIM AND ANGEL
Are we talking a hot three way like in the third new issue of BUFFY? Probably not, but I would like to see the three of them be forced to have an adult chat about their relationships and where they go in the future. (This would have to happen in BUFFY, since IDW can’t use any of the BUFFY characters in ANGEL.)

6.) DRU COMES BACK TO AVENGE SPIKE’S DEATH
I can’t imagine that once she finds out that Spike immolated himself for Buffy, that Dru wouldn’t be hunting down the Slayer for a little bit of payback. Dru was always one of the best and most demented BUFFY bads and she would be fun to see again.

7.) BUFFY MEETS ANGEL’S SON CONNOR
I’m not sure how this would work, but I want to see Buffy and Connor come face to face with each other. Buffy has never met Angel’s son who is pretty close to her age and I think it would be a meeting worth seeing. And knowing Buffy, chances are she'd sleep with the kid in the spirit of experimentation.

8.) SLAYERETTES IN HELL
Sounds like a bad musical huh? So where are the armies of slayers in the ANGEL comic? I would think that at least one part of the force would try to rescue Los Angeles from Hell and it would make for some really interesting battles!

9.) THE RETURN OF WOLFRAM & HART ROME BRANCH
I just want to see the return of the Rome office and its CEO. She was absolutely fabulous and one of the ANGEL characters I want to see again most. I have no breath!

10.) LINDSEY & LILAH GET TO COME TO HELL
There was a reference in the last issue about Wolfram & Hart resurrecting Lindsey or Lilah to serve in Wesley’s place. So why not bring them back; the more the merrier. I liked both of these characters and they could only make Angel’s time in Hell all that more fun.

Although all these suggestions could potentially become interesting stories. I think many of them shouldn't be brought to the comics. We've seen enough, if not too many, resurrections over the past years. It makes death too unimportant if they keep bringing characters back. Moreover, I think they should focus the stories on the characters they have right now instead of adding more. Oz might be a good fit on Buffy, and one or two run-ins with Riley wouldn't hurt, but A:AtF has enough characters right now. Also, the whole Spike/Angel/Buffy (and Connor) thing, although it needs to be explained at one point, just doesn't really fit into either Bs8 or A:AtF. Perhaps it's something for Angel: The Rise Up or Buffy Season 9.

Personally I think Joyce or Tara is the last thing the comic needs. Really they having nothing left to resolve. I'm with Allycat, death on the show needs to be given more respect. Some characters should stay dead.

I'd like to see Oz back, I think he would be a great character to see again. They have already done the Riley and Sam thing, unless it is something integeral to the arc I don't see why they should be back. As far as Buffy/Angel/Spike and Connor fit in, well it is definietly something that has to be tackled but not right now. Later in season 8 not now. To be honest Fray is the most exciting thing that could happen for me right now and it is, so I'm happy:D

I would still like to see a degree of trust and friendship established between Buffy and Faith. They don't have to be lovers or even as close as sisters, but they should reach the point where they actually TRUST each other. I always thought that they made a pretty good team and were really getting good together before the Assistant Mayor's accidental death and all that followed.

Me too on Faith. It would be like just when Buffy thinks all have betrayed her, and she's all alone, here comes Giles and Faith to help her out.

Rather than characters coming back from the dead, I'd be a bigger fan of the return. Oz yeah, and maybe Dana.

The Angel series is getting over choked with drop-ins. I think they should leave that alone for awhile, and tell the story.

As much as I would love to see Joyce return, even I can see that it would be just wrong for the comics. Bringing her or Tara back would cheapen their deaths and the profound effect they had on the characters.
Death being cheapened is something a lot of shows make a mistake with and wouldn't want Buffy to be one of them.
However as with the Anya case that's been rumored, flashbacks are always acceptable (especially when it's done in such a Joss way that the flashback/alternate reality causes our Scoobies even more pain. Because we know he likes doing that.)

The Riley suggestion intrigues me though. Especially with how much the military are involved in this season anyway, it could really fit. Or a crossing with Sam would also be cool. I'd loved them two to have a 'save the scoobies' butts' moment, hehe.

Yeah... I pretty much agree that back-from-the-dead stories and cameo appearances that don't fit into the story would be bad. If Joss wants to examine/test the influence of a dead or past character on the current main characters, then I think flashbacks, dream sequences, or a possible Wishverse-like story are fine (if used in moderation, of course).

As for the Angel/Buffy/Spike stuff... I have come to accept that they are in different comics and that they were on different shows when the Buffyverse left TV. Spike being alive (ish) and Buffy not knowing about it is a huge loose end. Angel having a son and Buffy not knowing about it is another huge loose end. The Angel gang being in Hell along with the rest of LA is a huge loose end about which you'd think the Scoobies need to be aware. I agree that there are things there that need to be addressed. I'm just not in any hurry to see that happen. I think we have plenty of time to address the Angel/Buffy/Spike situation. As things stand right now, I'm a lot more interested in figuring out how Angel and Spike are going to get out of Hell than I am in seeing how they're going to deal with their Buffy issues (unless, of course, they engage in hilarious, Buffy-related banter and light fisticuffs while working together to escape from Hell).

Like WA and N4H, I want an in-comic reconciliation of the Faith and Giles variety. The rift between Buffy and Giles bothers me to no end. I wanna know why they claim not to be on speaking terms (and yet are often on the phone together or with one another's teams). I wanna see Giles and Buffy make up. And, yes, I want to see Faith be accepted as a member of Team Scooby. I think that story has the potential to be a lot more interesting than a rehashing of the same old Buffy love triangle.

I agree with N4H I think Giles and Faith will eventually appear in the shape of the cavalary and end up being the only people Buffy can trust. Her, Willow and Xander are due a huge falling out and it is just so Joss to make the one person in the world she can't trust the only person she should trust. I'd love to see some synchronised slaying again.

I just want Buffy to find out about Spike. That's about it really, certainly don't want more returns from the dead, though slayers in hell and Sam and Reilly Finn would also be pretty interesting.

I definitely agree with a lot of the characters they'd like to see return...Oz, Drusilla (we never did find out where she went off to after Crush), and Riley, and I'd love to see her reuinite with Spike or meet Connor. And, even though I'd be SO happy to see Tara or Joyce come back, I do agree that it would cheapen their deaths. Since I love Tara so much, I think it'd be cool to see Willow find some kind of spell that would let her communicate with her, and perhaps she could let Buffy talk to Joyce and explain all the crazy things that happened since her death. But of course, that's just a crazy alternative to bringing them back from the dead.

I thought about Joyce coming back as a guide for Buffy. A ghostly guide. Maybe sometimes as we all do, Buffy will be a little lost on her way. Her mom could appear to her and be somewhat of a guide.
I am not saying it would work, but I am trying to figure out how she could 'fit' in.

It would be good if those things happened; I doubt they will. Some of them might, but having them all might be a bit to much.

First of all I'd like either a friendship(trustship) between Buffy and Faith or to have an Angel-Faith crossover since Faithy always did her best while Angel was by her side...although I agree that resurrections would cheapen some character's deaths(like Tara,Joyce and Anya) in the case of Cordy who died in a mystical way and is also the link between Angel and the PTBs it would be good(also it would bring Angel back in the saving one soul at a time concept that i really loved)also about the fact that some mentioned above about ATF having too many characters it doesnt bother me to have a strong team as long as there is not too much space wasted for theme(they can be cool sidekicks:P)
finally to end another huge post:P any comebacks(Dru,Oz etc) are more than welcome but for a few issues since I belive they have led their separate ways..
