(In order to answer this, you must have seen the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie, read the Buffy origin story as per the comic, and seen the flashback to Buffy's initial meeting with her first Watcher in the series)

Which version of Merrick do you prefer? I prefer the much more dynamic one as he appears in the comic, a more kick ass type of demon fighter. He makes Giles of the first few seasons look almost like Wesley originally did by comparison.

I dunno, you seem to have listed quite decent point, but I'm fallen under charisma of Donald Sutherland. So, I'd choose Merrick from Buffy the Movie.
The Merrick of the series is deeply associated with that naughty lawyer from Aly McBeal. (I know, that's sort of prejudice, but can't fight the impression).

I've never really liked Donald Sutherland. People are all, "Ooh, charisma," and I'm like, "Where?" And I didn't really like the Merrick in the series, either, cause he seemed a little too desperate and dirty-old-man-y. So I guess I have to go with the comic book one, though I've only read it once and that was months ago.

Yeah I felt the same way, didn't help that he was hanging outside a school to further his dirty perve image :)

I would have to say I prefer the Merrick from the comic. He started off a tight-ass (much like Giles did but in an entirely different way) but Buffy warmed him and he became just that little bit cooler. And what he did to protect Buffy- taking his life so Lothos could not use him against her? It was very impressive, moving and definitely added a depth to the character that I just didn't get in the movie at all and well, in the series- like you guys said. We got a short clip of a Watcher acting like a pervy old man. Not good.
