Does anyone understand why Werewolf-Oz looks different in this season than the last season? I don't know about you guys, but I can't stand the look of S3 werewolf. Ok, I take that back. I like how they changed the normal look of a werewolf for BTVS so it's different than other shows, but that still doesn't explain why he looks different from S2-S3...

To quote Robert Hall (of Almost Human, the special effects company for Angel), they all thought werewolf Oz looked like "a gay possum," and I have to say, I agree. They were probably just trying to improve on the wolf's appearance, even if it didn't work out that well.

I think that possibly the "gray possum" werewolf was an easier costume for the stunt man to wear and move around in. Did you notice, however, that Nina as a werewolf in Angel Season 5 looked like the original Oz werewolf? I guess they didn't like the possum any longer.

So true, they definitely did change his costume...

Noticed this with Anya too, if you look at her "demon" face in "The Wish" vs. "Selfless" in season 7 it's TOTALLY different. They definitely glamourized it a lot more (even with Spike and Angel, I found their vamp visages got softer as time went on somehow).

Not sure if this was a fluke or just the changing faces of the actors, or maybe they were just going for a different look? ???

With the getting-softer point, I think it was because the characters in question were more well known and liked. As they were characters the audience were meant to feel connected to, they needed to make those particular ones a little prettier in the demon department because it's a lot harder to like someone who scares or grosses you out everytime they look at the camera.

The vampire make-up on Angel was always different to on Buffy though and in the first season of Angel it took me a good long while to get used to it.

Yeah, I noticed that too! Spike looked totally badass in Season 2, but Season 6... not so much...

I've always been in the minority, but I actually liked the original werewolf design better. It did need work, as the face didn't allow much movement, but I thought the "hairy guy scampering around on all fours" deal was no improvement.

as far as charcters like angel and spike not looking so scary in their vamp faces as time went on, I think it was, like Joyce Summers said, to do with our connection to the characters. If they stayed really scary and ugly the whole time we wouldn't have warmed to their vamp sides as much.. I also noticed Anya looking way better as a vengeance demon in S6 and S7 than S3 too.. but who knows, this could be due to better make up and effects?

I must be one of those really unobservant viewers that didn't even register the change in costume. I admit I didn't like Veruca, she just looked incredibly ugly, but I think that's what they were going for. She wasn't meant to be liked.

Veruca = yuck.
Early wolf = kewl.
Later wolf = goofy hellhound-lookin' thing.
Nina = YUM! I wish they had developed her character much, much more.

I think the werewolf costume is one of the worst in the show - I hate how it looks like a man in a suit. I was watching the episode "New Moon Rising" the other day, and my sister's friend came in halfway through, just after Oz has turned. He said something along the lines of "why is a gorilla chasing that girl?" I think it's true - the costume does look a little gorilla-ish!

Oz looked cool when he was in the midst of transforming. Too bad they couldn't have just left him how he looked in 'Fear Itself'. I think it would have been far more frightening to have him in hardcore werewolf make up chasing Willow than the silly hellhoundish/gorillaish thing.

I thought the costume for the original Oz wolfy was awful! Glad it changed!

I personally like the first costume better.. more wolf-y like... But, the newest one wasn't bad either...

I guess they didn't want to stick with the first wolfman costume ("Phases") as that showed nothing of the actor's face (deliberately - to keep us guessing longer in the ep. I'm near 100% sure that one wasn't even played by Seth). As to what would have been my preferred version, I'd have wished for a somewhat intensified (read, bright yellow contact lenses and significantly more hair) version of his half-transformed form in "Fear, Itself" - as that one was way more clearly Seth, and thus much more intensely spooky than the WereGorilla!
