Exclusive Pilot Details: Welcome to the Dollhouse!

My job is always ice cream and chocolate syrup, but some days I get sprinkles too! Today is one of those days, because I just got a major treat in the form of a sneak peek at Joss Whedon's Dollhouse pilot. Click in to pour some sugar for yourself...

What's the pilot episode called?
"Echo."

What's it about?
The logline don't lie: "Echo (Eliza Dushku) is a young woman who is literally everybody's fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo's burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse."

What's it like?
Dollhouse is like The Bourne Identity meets Stepford Wives meets boarding school meets Los Angeles neo-noir meets the Whedonverse. In short, it's rad, man.

If I was writing an eighth-grade book report about Dollhouse, what would I list as the "themes"?
Identity, self-determination, free will is both a blessing and a pain in the ass, The Next Generation's Data is a great TV character, Eliza Dushku is hot. What? Those first three at least are almost certainly themes.

Is Echo just a new name for Faith?
That's a negatory. Echo has a genius for contemplation and self-awareness that Faith couldn't begin to approach. Echo also has about 48 different faces to show the world, which gives her a good head start on Faith, who seemed to vary primarily between rage and desolation. In the first episode, we are shown that Echo is essentially like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz—"If I only had a brain…"—but she's otherwise fully equipped with a soul, a rockin' bod, and a good, fearless heart.

Who's the new boss of us all?
Olivia Williams is going to rock as Adelle Dewitt, a Frigidaire administratrix whose rare brushes with human empathy and compassion are enough to make you suspect she might just be a good guy after all.

Where's the twist?
The Dolls are programmed to mix up identity and personality with a splash of subterfuge and a dash of dementia—but they're not the only ones. Tahmoh Penikett's FBI agent Paul Ballard is obsessed with opening up the Dollhouse, but he may have more in common with—and already be closer to—the Dolls than he even knows.

Where is the love?
Echo and Paul are going to be hot like fire, no doubt, but I predict that cerebral Doll mechanic Topher (think Kevin Rankin's character in Bionic Woman, but more evil) and blank-slate Kewpie-doll Sierra (Dichen Lachman) might end up being the other pair of opposites that attract.

Who's the Xander?
If I had to guess, I'd pick Victor (Enver Gjokaj).

What does the actress who plays Dr. Claire Saunders need to bring to the table?
Visible facial scars from a razor-blade attack somewhere in her past or a cooperative, calm personality and a willingness to sit quietly in a prosthetic makeup chair for extended periods each day. Scars notwithstanding, I'm kind of seeing Cynthia Watros or Kathleen Robertson in the part…

Could I be anymore excited? nope, don't think so. Thanks so much for posting that, I like that they are being very decisive on the fact that Echo isn't a Faith replica. Gives me hope for interesting plots with no re-hash :)

This is all I need to know.

In short, it's rad, man.

But really, was there ever any doubt?

Not complaining about the details though. It is to rub ones' hands together in anticipation.

OK. Having seen that preview(which,as Arte Johnson so famously put it,is VERRRRRRY interesting)...who would you cast in the 3 remaining roles?

(Doesn't matter if they're from the Whedonverse.)

OK, this is the most exciting description I've read yet. Is it legit? Not sure. Possible spoilers...

Yes, there is much more to Dollhouse than meets the eye and Whedon succeeds here by filling his script with a multitude of morally grey characters engaged in one of the most sickening and intriguing displays of human trafficking ever devised. I don't want to spoil anything but I will say that there there's an unexplained back story (referred to as Alpha) that will likely come into play down the line and the power structure within the Dollhouse is a fluctuating, living thing unto itself. As for the Dollhouse itself, it certainly didn't "look" anything like I expected it to based on the information that was trickling out during casting: it's not a draconian prison nor an icy SD-6-type operations hub; instead it's more like a serene, Japanese-influenced, high-tech spa for the Actives.

But there's a real undercurrent of danger lurking here and the staffers--from jokey and amoral tech Topher and gruff handler Boyd to the physically scarred Dr. Claire Saunders and manipulative overseer Adelle DeWitt--engage in a high-stakes game of human chess, with the Actives little more than expendable pawns. Or, well, dolls.

As for Dollhouse's lead character Echo, this is quite a role that Whedon has written for Eliza Dushku, allowing her to play a variety of personalities and moods in a single episode. In fact, we get to see Echo in no less than five (off the top of my head anyway) identities in the pilot episode alone. As we all know, Echo is struggling with self-awareness, as she begins remembering things from her previous "engagements" that she shouldn't, things that should have been wiped clean from her memory by Topher. Things that her "captors" don't want her to remember.

So is it an action-adventure yarn? A story of science gone mad? A tale about a cop determined to get at the truth no matter what the cost? Or a metaphysical drama about the nature of memory and identity? Why can't it be all of the above?

In the gifted hands of Joss Whedon, Dollhouse is a beautiful enigma wrapped in a riddle, a gripping conspiracy story for the ages filled with urban legends, memory tampering, and long-buried secrets coming to the fore. It's a Shakespearean story of hubris and likely vengeance, filled with sound and fury and signifying, well, lots.

I'm hungry for more.

I tend to believe it, or at least want to. It sounds like what Whedon would do. Plus we know some sort of screener is out, so it makes sense some would see it.

There will be some spirited message board conversations on this one when it comes out, I'll wager.

I was just thinking...I still see some fanboy naysayers saying that Eliza can't sustain her own show. But Joss' shows are always true ensembles...every character has something to offer. And this one is sounding so rich and weird and dark and fun. This is more than just an Eliza vehicle.

I'd like to see a Whedon show become a truly popular hit. But I'll settle for culty sleeper hit that just survives with middling ratings on FOX. I'll be curious to see how they end up marketing this thing.

A little tidbit from Kristin at E!

Peter in Cardiff, Wales: What's this scoop about a Dollhouse location shoot that you buried in the Lost Redux?
Oh, what? That? You guys don't care about Dollhouse, do you? Hee. Late last week, there was a two-day-long shoot at a Spanish Mission Revival-style duplex in L.A.'s Miracle Mile area—mostly night shots, I believe—and if I had to bet money, I'd say it was serving as Paul's (Tahmoh Penikett) apartment, where Echo and Paul have their meet-cute/meet-complicated and their very first fight scene. Awww...

This will only make sense if you've seen Invader Zim, but I'm excited in a full on 'Gir' kind of way. "I neeeeeeeed Dollhouse! I need it or I will explode, that happens to me sometimes." *runs around room like cracked-out ferret* :)

Another update from Kristin:

I spent a good while chatting with the one and only Joss Whedon (pinch me!), who told me they he just wrapped on the pilot shoot for Dollhouse Friday, and that he has a very good feeling about the series because "Eliza Dushku can play anything, and in this series, she does." Can. Not. Wait. He also very kindly shared this info about the show:

• Joss directs the second episode as well as the finished-on-Friday pilot, just to get things rolling.

• Liz Craft and Sarah Fain are the show runners.

• Steve DeKnight and Tim Minear are both consulting producers on the series.

• Tim is writing and directing the midseason two-parter, namely episodes seven and eight.

• Joss would love to get Jane Espenson to join the gang too, if he could, but she's on Battlestar at the moment and the show's budget might not permit it. (Is it just me or do you want to send Fox a check right about now?)

• As reported earlier this week, Dollhouse will go at midseason, and, according to Joss, it's likely premiering in January.

• There is no Dollhouse presentation planned at the Fox event, but Eliza Dushku might appear on behalf of the show.

• Joss: "I'm still having so much fun. I keep waiting for it to not be fun anymore."

• Joss needs your/our help promoting Dr. Horrible when it comes out, because the marketing group for that little online musical is...him. I'll make the wheat paste for the posters, you print up the flyers, 'kay?

"Dollhouse" is either an actor's dream, or an actor's nightmare. Playing essentially a different character every episode requires versatility very few people can achieve, because they have to create an entirely new identity each week as opposed to slowly building a personality over a number episodes. I think Eliza will be able to rise to the challenge. It won't be easy, but I have "Faith" in the lady. (I just couldn't resist)
