Hey :)

I know I'm new here and I hope no one minds me starting a new thread. But darkhorse have just released three preview pages for 'Wolves At the Gate Part 3' so I thought I'd post them here.

http://www.darkhorse.com/profile/preview.php?theid=14-831&p=1

They're so sad and powerful pages :(

Pretty funny - these previews have, what, 4 or 5 short lines of dialogue in three pages? And already the complaints have started - "But where were the police? Took me right out of the story", "Just another example of how Buffy sees herself as above the law."

Gawd-dam. Next, people will be bitching that Buffy should have learned Japanese before she made the trip. Why, she had a whole hour to spare, plus the flight over. That's so OOC...

LOL @ RH

I, too, am too bored with the negativity.

Those are awesome. I'm enjoying Drac this time around. Can't wait 'til next week!

Cool. More pages. And like BB said, loving Drac for the way he's been even if it does seem not very Draculay. I've always been a sucker for the mysterious, few words, lust-worthy exotic accent, dark eyes Dracula deal (I totally swooned for Chris Sarandon in Fright Night when I was a teen......). And he pulled it off in the season 5 opener (He had all the qualifiers mentioned above after all) but now he's lost his mystere and I'm less entranced. So while he's fun and enjoyable in season 8, that loss there is a bit of a shame.

I think I made sense there, haha

Couldn't you see Johnny Depp doing this Dracula? I just glanced at that one pic, and immediately thought, Johny Depp. Is it cause he looks a bit like Sweeny Todd?

He appears to be modeled on Gary Oldman's Dracula.

Admittedly I do think they screwed Dracula's character up a bit in regards to how he was in 'Buffy VS Dracula.' But he's still very cruel and twisted, and I'm glad they didn't make him a 'good vampire' for the sake of an easy story, they've made an effort to show that he's still a evil bastard.

And yeah, I agree, so over the criticism. Especially on LJ. Many of those members actually stated before season 8 begun that they weren't going to take season 8 seriously, or basically implied they wouldn’t like it. Then an issue comes out and they say things like "I hoped for the best" or "I'm trying really hard but there's so substance here" when it's fairly evident they made up their minds to view it that way from the very beginning. They never gave it a chance, so very over it.

Also sick of the double standards being applied to season 8 in comparison to previous televised seasons. People are complaining it’s not logical because the police would have seen Aiko, ah did the police do anything in Sunnydale? Did that mean past seasons were ‘illogical’ as some have called season 8 because of this.

But I digress “sigh”. Great issue so far though, really looking forward to this and Willow/Buffy was very sweet.

I don't think they really screwed up the actual Dracula character all that much, at least not so far. If anything, the character as portrayed originally in the "Buffy" series, was the real screw up, and that might be excused by a reaction to some aura put out by the hellmouth. The historical Dracula, or Vlad Tepes, is ruthless, cruel, and arrogant, certainly, but he also has his good points. He's loyal to his allies (well, as long as it serves his purpose), is a formidable warrior, and is someone you absolutely DON'T want to get pissed off at you the way that the Japanese vampires quite obviously have. He seems to see the Slayers as allies, if only for the short term, and as long as he continues to do so, he can be a real asset to them.

I don't think he will turn out to be Buffy's third vampire boyfriend, obviously, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if his natural charm and sophistication didn't inspire a few crushes from some of the younger Slayers.

The crushage is BOUND to happen, haha. It is part of the Dracula Charm. Unexplainable yet Irresistable. I would love it if Satsu came over all swooned with him, you know, considering well, everything. Haha. It would be similar I think to Willow's reaction in Buffy vs Dracula, where Tara asked worriedly 'You thought Dracula was sexy?'.

No, I'm really not. It may not be the SSBBRCTAMBROEP*(tm, ©,®), but I'm thinking it will be anything but boring. (Actually, it's those SSBBRCTAMBROEPs*(tm, ©,®) that I usually find boring. YMMV.)

There is no such thing as a boring comic book because you always go back to it and find something you missed.

i just put Buffy S8, Angel: after the fall, Spike: after the fall

on my pull list (had no idea it was canon when it first came out)

It just seems like this arc is just a little boring sidestory for the writers to take a brake from Twilight for a while. And we're not even finding out much about anything atm, we're two issues in and all we know is a bunch of vamps don't want loads of slayers around, and surely that goes without saying anyway

Rowan Hawthorn
05-05-2008, 11:23 AM
Is that all we're finding out? Really? You must have missed the part about the vampires who have powers that supposedly only Dracula had, and who have their own counterpart to super-witch Willow, who in turn has come up with a counterspell to the one Willow used to create the new Slayer army - which was supposed to be some pretty darn big mojo, as I recall. I guess we could have had a two-panel exposition-fest where a couple of talking heads just explained all that in a few lines of dialogue so we could get to the important action stuff, but that would pretty much be the definition of crappy writing.

As far as taking a break from Twilight, there was never a season on TV that focused on the single Big Bad to the exclusion of everything else, either. Every season had multiple subplots running at any given time. Two issues of a comic isn't a lot of time to devote to setting up and telling an actual story; much less, and people would be complaining that the plots came out of nowhere - oh, wait, they do that, too, anyway. Nevermind...

The vampires with Drac's powers aren't exactly that important though are they?

And there was alot more time for this sort of stuff on the tv, hardly any in the comics

Maybe not, but you would know that how, exactly? They've just now appeared. And if they have the ability to remove Slayer powers, they certainly could be that important (whether or not they turn out to be in the end,) even if only as catalysts. Dismissing characters out of hand like that on their first appearance just strikes me as making a lot of assumptions without any basis.

I like how they kept the Dracula storyline consistent with "Antique" from the Tales of the Slayers. There's a strong bond, even a possible friendship between Dracula and Xander that sneaks through the cracks on Dracula and makes him do SOME level of good here.

Vampmogs

I agree that the vamps are indeed important. They've just shown the ability to take away a slayer's power, how is that not important?

i agree that the vamps are important to the stoy and how do we know that they're not somehow related to Twilight?
And not to mention the whole Oliver Twisting the Scythe and possibly ending all lines of Slayers including Buffy and Faith....ya I gues this arc is pretty boring (sarcasm!!!!!!!)

Wow.. shocking issue. Can't believe they did that...

Killing off Renee with the scythe was graphic and shocking and I adored her character so this sucks for me. Poor Xander, but I'm glad no one is safe, in fact I love it, keeps me on the edge of my seat. But poor Xander :(

Hmm, puts even more weight to the theory about Xander being the future traitor. Grief can lead to many things.
