I can't find a thread on this subject but if there is- I'm sorry.
I watched "Not Fade Away" for the very first time last night and I was SHOCKED by the ending! I knew that some things would be left unresolved but I didn't think it would end like that! I honestly thought that either spike or angel would get the shanshu by the end and I barely got any sleep last night because i didn't know who lived and who died! I'm gonna have to get the angel comics now!!!!
What are your thoughts?

I watched 'Not Fade Away' again the other night and I think it's fantastic, better than Buffy's ending. For season 5 being such a fun season, it really is a bloodbath! Cordelia, Fred, Wesley. And yeah, you really HAVE to read the comics! lol

Angel as a series is a bloodbath, especially compared to Buffy. Spike I consider a Buffy character, so he's not included, but of all the main characters in the series the only ones still alive are Angel, Lorne, and Connor. Doyle, Cordelia, Fred, Wesley, Lilah, Lindsey, Charles (he was on his way out at the end of Not Fade Away- as good as dead), Darla- it's a much grimmer show than people give it credit for.

I loved the ending - it was kinda perfect for the show that Angel was. Certainly get the comics, they follow on in a nice natural flow from the show and capture the characters really well (to tell the truth, i probably enjoy After the Fall a tiny little bit more than Buffy season 8, but that just my personal opinion, maybe influenced by how much i loved season five of Angel.

i like the ending alot because it summed up the show in one act. That act is to never give up no matter and allways fight the good fight.

So are we all.
I am reading Reading Angel, a collection of essays by intellectuals who love the Buffyverse. It's very interesting, and insightful... there's a neat article in there dissecting the ending as is, along with how it would be if there was another season. I recommend!

I loved the ending of S5, and before the comics, thought it was a great ending to the story of Angel and Co.
It was perfect--everything it should have been (even with the implied ending that everyone dies).

The ending was great, i figured Gunn would die and Angel, Spike and Illyria would get through. i was so looking forward to the comic's release to find out what happened next, sadly i'm disappointed with the comic though

I sort of felt Buffy's ending was rushed to me....I don't know. I didn't really feel satisfied. Actually both of the endings for the shows were not really good per se. Though I much preferred Angel's one. I guess not knowing who was going to survive that big battle was a key moment in that scene. And I love seeing how scary and realistic the monsters looked.
Buffy's ending reminded me of Lord of the Rings. lol! But I still loved it too, but felt "was that it?"

About the only positive thing that I could ever say about "Not Fade Away" was that it I am POSITIVE that I felt very cheated by it. At that time, we had no idea if there would ever be any kind of conclusion, any kind of answer to whether Angel, Spike, Illyria, or Gunn would survive the night or not. Frankly, given the events of "Angel: After The Fall," I'm still not absolutely certain just how it happened, but to go there gets into spoilers, so I'll just leave it at that point.

When I saw the ending of Angel I have to say I was upset. I didn't expect them to leave it in that way BUT...after watching it a few more times, I was quite happy with it. I love how they left it open since they were writing the comics.

The only thing about the ending is that until it was announced the show was canceled during Time Bomb I'm fairly certain the season was to have a different ending. The one written seemed a bit rushed in order to wrap up the show as cleanly as possible.

Watched the ending of Angel season 5 last night again, personally I quite liked the ending, I had no idea it was coming so obviously when Angel said what he did and then... end.. It was abit like ' What!! No you HAVE to be kidding me'..
Regardless it was a great ending as it had your mind in over-drive thinking about what happened etc..

I LOVE the ending and I will not be reading any follow on comics because of this.
I liked it being a cliff hanger. I don't really want to know what happened, It just feels more epic this way.
Most people probably totally disagree with this but I just felt it was a perfect ending for the show to finish on.
Admittedly I felt the same way, but I suppose because the comic books are canon, I've become somewhat invested. This said I was satisfied with the ending of Season 5.

Oh, I know...it killed me. I wanted them to confront Buffy and the Immortal SO badly!! There are many unanswered questions hopefully the comics will answer...I'm going to start reading them soon...
And man, Cordelia, Fred, and Wesley...so much death! So sad. I was like, man, I'm going to kill someone if Spike dies again :) I loved season 5. My favorite of the whole series. I thought it was really well done - in my opinion, no crappy episodes at all.
I felt like Angel and Spike finally came to a good place. What do you all think? I mean, they're never going to like eachother, really - but they seemed to accept that they are fighting on the same side...and they really seemed to bond over the fact that they still loved Buffy, but that they had to move on and forget her and get on with thier lives.
I loved "The Girl In Question". What a great episode...
I loved when Andrew said, "Buffy loves both of you, but she's gotta live her life."
and...what happened to...Gunn? Was it implied that he....died? I guess I have to read the comics to see...
I love Gunn...

I like the ending, but not as much as chosen. The ending of Angel seemed way to rushed, obviously coz they got cancelled half way through the season. It was like, oh yer there's this thing called the black thorn now.....what? did I miss something?. It would have been so much better if they had of continued on, especially since you here all those planned plot lines for season 6 and of course some of the rumors, like Wes would never have been killed, Gunn would have become a vampire, Oz was suppose to be brought in as a kinda guide to Nina.....that would have really been awsome!, but gotta be satisfied with the comic books I guess.

You really dont wanna read the comics ever, they will spoil the fantasy.
I thought NFA was pretty average right up until the last 10 minutes of it anyway, but the final scene was immense

It's true. Angel is very dark. That's why I like it for different reasons then Buffy - Angel is more grim lie you said, but also more ironic and cynical...

I just put that book on hold at the library! I also reccomend "Why Buffy Matters" if you're interested in Buffyverse discussions. It's sort of poorly edited and she jumps around a lot - but a very insightful book by someone whom obviously looks WAY into it like we do :)
Also..Read "Undead TV", another good essay collection. :)

Yeah... I got all :aah: when I watched Not Fade Away!
I like the ending, its very "hopefully". They, all fighting together, knowing they are all going to die.
Lorne giving up was very consistant, the way he kills Lindsay is perfect, and the way Lindsay is really mad cause it wasn´t Angel xD
The episode is great! But the dragons flying and all... nah.

I think the ending was great but not for someone who wants to know exactly what happens to them all i.e. me. I know deep down it was a good ending but dammit I want to know who lives and dies. I have to be honest though, I have not decided whether I am going to read the angel comics. Ug, I just know.

Just saw it on Monday night, and I'm pretty disappointed. This whole Black Thorn thing screams "last-minute-idea", and the end is way too open for my taste, enough to make me feel cheated. I can now definitely admit my (rather unpopular, I guess) opinion of liking S4 way better than S5 - even though the Angel-Spike banter all through the season is, of course, priceless, and some eps are just marvellous (Smile Time!!!).
S5 was desperately missing an ARC. (Yes I know, it was deliberately designed to be arcless... but I loved the all-arc S4 - it kept me gaping thunderstruck at the screen at just about every episode's ending!)
