It's my understanding that they killed the character because of the actor's drug problem. I know that he died later in a drug overdose. As far as Doyle goes, I didn't start watching "Angel" until several seasons later, so I never really got attached to him.

That is entirely possible.
However Joss explains concerning Jesse in Welcome to the Hellmouth that he wanted to kill a character early who was listed in the opening credits.
He states he took advantage of that with Angel.
This may just be a nice story to gloss over the drug problem that you mentioned as a kindness though.

Doyle was great, but I think he played his part and it was for the best that he went. For one thing, if he hadn't, we wouldn't have Wesley. I just can't see Doyle going through his transformation; for all his flaws, Doyle was a complete, finished character. Also, Cordelia would never have gotten the Visions, so she would have stayed secretary for ever! Not so good. So he was a great character, but Doyle's death was a part of that, whatever the reasons off-screen.

I am now re-watching ANGEL, currently in S-1 . I too, kinda hate it that they killed off Doyle. I was even more bummed when I'd discovered that Glenn Quinn was dead, so there was no hope of Doyle ever returning. His crush on Cordy was so sweet! - still, I am on eppy #6 (tonight), and I do get a funky little *twinge* anytime Doyle appears on screen. :(

I sometimes wonder about something. You know that bit in You're Welcome where Cordelia is watching Doyle in the AI advertisement they made. When she says "Another soldier down", I sometimes wonder if that isn't also a real world nod to Quin's personal story. There were supposed to be real word comparison's between W&H, and the WB, for example. It makes me wonder.

I didn't really care about him dying. There were certain other characters I mourned a lot more over.
Doyle wasn't that great of a character imo, seriously he was somehow missing spice. So glad we got Wesley as a replacement.

I was gutted when we lost Doyle. Prefer Doyle to Wesley.

I think Doyle was an amazing character and I was really sad when they killed him off. Also he was Irish so that made me like him even more. If there was a choice between Doyle and Wesley I would definetly pick Doyle.

Sometimes, it takes me a while to get into a character. It was this way with Doyle. When I started watching Angel, my friend (who had turned me on to Buffy in the first place) asked how I felt about Doyle. I replied "I'm not sure yet," and then a few episodes later, he died. Then I got why she asked! But after watching Hero, I liked him for how selfless he was.
So I can't say I was too sad when he died, because I only decided that I liked him after he'd died.

I loved Doyle. He was a fantastic character right from the off. You instantly knew who this guy was and what he was about because he was so well written and played brilliantly by Glenn Quinn. I know a lot of people love Doyle and were upset when he died and for fans to love a character so much, who has only been on the show for nine episodes, it says a lot.
