View Full Version : Buffy Graduates, how?

How did Buffy graduate? she hardly ever went to a class, probably never to a history class as she had to be told where the classroom was for the exam.
Was that why she didn't date Xander? didn't want a boyfriend who was to intelligent for her? When she did go back to school, even the teachers couldn't remember seeing her.
Maybe Snyder wanted to get rid of her cos she was lowering the standard of the school.
As a role model, should fans of Buffy start missing their classes?

I don't know what the lowest necessary GPA to graduate is, but she had a 2.something, so obviously that's high enough.

Maybe Buffy is just really smart. We have some people around here like that. You know, those ones who never get their ass up for work, never attend class but still somehow manage to get through.

If you recall, in the episode that mentions Buffy's S.A.T.'s both she and Willow were amazed at how her score "kicked ass." Then later in Maggie Walsh's Psycc class, she was asked to lead a discussion because the "Evil B*tch Monster From Hell" was impressed by her good work. Apparently, the "sweet girl, bot that bright," was brighter than she appeared to be, which isn't all that amazing. Stupid Slayers wouldn't last that long.
i also always assumed she had just a smidge of help from Willow (like for instance in Killed by Death, Willow completes all her homework assignments for her) or something like that?

I think Buffy's one of those people that puts the least amount of effort and still manages to pass, cos she's quite a smart cookie! ;)

It's not that hard to pass these days. My school didn't have a minimum GPA to my knowledge, just a credit minimum of 26 when everyone has the chance to get 32 regular credits, and there are independent studies and work studies and other things that can give you more credits. And to get those credits you only needed to pass with a 70%, and I know at most schools it's a 50%. Now I don't know what Buffy's school's requirements were, but they probably were about the same. And still, there were a fair number of people in my class who didn't graduate on time because of missing credits. So it's possible to barely squeeze by without trying and then it's possible to fail without trying.
Also, we have to remember Buffy isn't 24, so there are chunks of time in her daily life that we miss because it doesn't relate to the episode's problem. It's likely that she was in classes a lot of that time, because I believe I recall her saying she got into Northwestern. Now, I don't even know where that is, but it sounds like Northeastern, and if it's as good of a school, then she would have had to go to class and do well, because colleges look at EVERYTHING you've ever done, which is why the application process sucks so much (yes I'm bitter).
Plus, as Lily stated, Willow probably helped her on more than one occasion.

I think Buffy made it to class reguarly but just didnt care to pay attention in it or where it was. Plus who knows how much Giles helped her out (probably saying she was helping him with stuff so she would be excused). And we know Synder was on her basically 24/7 in highschool. If she missed more than the norm, Synder probably wouldve tried to kick her out again. Didnt he set up some standards when he accepted her back into Sunnydale High?

Like me! :p
But this thread is reading a lil too much into it I think hehe. Even though she was absent a lot, she always met her deadlines and did the work required! :)

Giles was the librarian, no?
Librarians are major to the school. Buffy had some major connections... Giles probably had a hand in some cheat sheets or... something!

I can't really see Giles doing that.
And apart from his morality, librarians might be big in general (I don't know) but Snyder pretty much disliked him, so I'm not sure just how much influence Giles could get.

Well, I could see him do that. After all, he's not only the librarian, but also the Ripper - he's done worse things than that in his time, might give Buffy a break on the academical grounds to make up for her "double burden". I also remind you of "Bad Eggs", where he commented on Xander's cheating by hardboiling his egg as "Machiavellian ingenuity". And while our favorite impotent Nazi aka Mr. Ferengi Snakefood [hey, how's that for a user nick?] might neither like or respect Giles, he clearly fears the Ripper - Buffy wouldn't be back at Sunnydale High if it hadn't been for a little strategical threatening, remember?

But, the episode where she couldn't find the history class for the exam was a nightmare, right?
It seemed like all the times she was in the library, it was either for a short time or after school because the rest of the group was there too.
Other than the first few episodes, they don't act like she's missing class all that much....except when she takes off with Faith for that little bit.

Well, since even her favorite teacher from year 2 didn't remember her at the start of year 3, I reckon she must have been absent quite a lot. And I'm not sure my memory serves me correctly here, but I vaguely seem to remember Snyder mentioned her frequent absence from classes as one of her "troublemaking" attributes (probably in "School Hard"?).

Well, the school did kind of explode and burn to the ground after being ravaged by a giant snake. Perhaps Giles just "made" her diploma beforehand knowing there'd be no proof left.

i was wondering how he got it, since i think he said he salvaged it from the wreckage... come on! he should have said he stole it beforehand.... but i dont think she even looked at it so probably an art attack by Giles

Northwestern is an excellent school (located in Chicago, Il). So yeah, I think we can pretty much take it for granted that Buffy *was* in fact in class a whole lot of the time, and did in fact get good grades (again, probably with plenty of help from Willow).

I Don't get that either cause look at Xander he went to classes more often than B.

Yeah but Xander has always seemed a bit thick, and to be honest, never really seemed to bothered about going to college. Despite Buffy being a bimbo at times, she definitely was not stupid. As someone earlier said, you can't be stupid and be a slayer, you wouldn't last to long. And not only did she have Willows help with studying, but in... Band Candy? Giles is helping her study as well. With two of the smartest people in Sunnydale helping her study why wouldn't she pass?
On that note though, why would Oz not graduate the year before if it was just a case of sitting some tests, he tests well. Maybe Buffy pulled her act together after going back to school. After all, in season 3 are we really given the impression that she's skipping a lot of classes?
Also, when I was in year 10 I didn't do any homework all year and skipped every single maths class for the last semester, most of my other classes, showed up for the tests and passed. Oh and I also STILL have nightmares about being forced to go back to high school and not being able to find my classes!!!

Buffy may not have attended a lot of classes, but she isn't stupid. She's more clever than book smart but she's smart and as a lot of people said she probably got some tutoring from Giles and Willow. You see them studying in the graveyard on more than one occasion. Though I think we all can agree that Buffy can be very stupid at times.
