american beauty is fantastic and pulp fiction is good but couldnt say 'king of all films', nothing that is a reference piece of 'look at what films Quentin Tarantino has seen' can be king of films..., fight club never gets old tho 28 days does after a few watches but i do love it.... ive gotta think now

These are ten on my favorites, not necessarily in any order. They're not what I'd consider the ten best movies though--some are fantastic films, some are fun.

The Godfather
Memento
The Prestige
The Princess Bride
The Big Lebowski
Cinema Paradiso
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
The Lord of the Rings (I'm counting them as one)
V for Vendetta
Minority Report

Superstar

Blade Runner - Ridley set the standard with this film
Die Hard - Action/adventure at its finest
Army of Darkness - comedy cult classic
Raiders of the Lost Ark - pulpy goodness that doesn't get old
The Princess Bride - romantic/comedy that isn't mushy
Jurassic Park - wonders of CGI in a new world
The Exorcist - boundary-pushing for its day, and still holds up
Night of the Living Dead (Original) - spawned a genre
Star Wars (Original) - revived a genre
The Lord of the Rings - Fantasy can be good after all

And I didn´t got to mention: The commitments, Cool runnings, Star wars, Indiana Jones, Notting Hill, T2, Shakespeare in love, Bad boys, The green mile, Sliding doors and so on... This is difficult!

Yam Sham agrees: Great idea for a thread, but I think it would go in the "Social Studies" section. ;)
You're right, so I've moved it accordingly :)

Well other than Alien being number 1 as has been since I was 9 this list isn't really in order.

1, Alien; I saw it when I was 9 and it terrified me.

2, Transformer; Pure nostalgia trip in modern CGI form.

3, Crash; An awesome film that shows racism to be as foolish as it truly is.

4, Batman Begins, I'm a fanboy (well an objective fanboy, which I think is an oxymoron).

5, Dark Star, The guys who did Alien plus John carpenter's student sci-fi film, the alien beach ball is the highlight.

6, The lord of the rings (all 3); I love the book and the battles are awesome.

7, The Prestige, I'm a big 'magic' fan and the characters in this film inspire me the dedication that '___' character (left name out as not to spoil for people who haven't seen it) shows to his craft always reminds me that if I want to do something, I can, I will and I better be bloody well willing to work for it.

8, Stat Wars (ep's 5,6&7), I love the whole empire, stormtroopers (my fav people in star wars, love the uniform, and I want one). Ep's 1-3 are ok but they lack the charm and the atmosphere of the org tri.

9, Ghostbusters; need I say more.

10, Slapshot; An awesome hockey film, Clean hits please!, Scott Stevens is a legend and should be coaching NJD defence as we lacked a hitter last season, well Vishnesky did a good job but he's no number 4.

Again, in no real order.

The Princess Bride
Labyrinth
Dark Crystal
Edward Scissorhands
Titanic
Wall-E
The Lord of the Rings (does this count as 3? Tough, I'm counting it as 1. Tolkien would have wanted it that way)
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Pirates of the Caribbean
What's Eating Gilbert Grape

My top 10 films (not in order, really)

1. Forest Gump - this film had EVERYTHING - love, humor, drama, war, football, ping-pong, shrimping, Elvis, smiley face, marriage, death, and spanned 40 years - it was GREAT

2. The Princess Bride - funny, romantic, sweet, good story line plus Andre the Giant - what's not to love?

3. The Terminator (Parts I & II; sorry, Part III doesn't make the cut) - an incredible tale of doomsday from the future, with no holes, & Arnold Schwarzenegger as both the BAD guy & the GOOD guy. Fabulous!

4. Dances With Wolves - a beautiful story about the ugliness of prejudices.

5. Braveheart - by far Mel Gibson's best work. From the story to the scenery to the costumes to the realistic deaths - it was just pure wonderment.

6. The World According to Garp - Robin Williams, Glenn Close, and John Lithgow. It hardly gets any better!

7. Secondhand Lions - Robert Duvall & Michael Caine were the BEST brother team ever!

8. Crazy in Alabama - some critics term this as "the worst movie ever" but I can't disagree enough! - a battered woman kills her husband, takes his head with her on a cross country trip to become a movie star, gets arrested & goes on trial, & all this mixed into the middle of the racist-torn south... I love this movie!

9. Jaws - Even tho this movie is over 30 years old, it still strikes fear the heart of every beach-goer. Can you even THINK ABOUT the ocean without hearing the "dum-dum... dummmm-dum... dumdum-dumdum-dumdum" music??

10. Gone With the Wind - because a top ten list without it is just not a top-ten list. And who can NOT love the audacity of Scarlett O'Hara & the utmost loveable badboy Rhett Butler?

Oh, man, I don't think I have a top ten, but I have a few favorites!

Batman Returns. Ohmylord. My favorite superhero movie of all time.
Wayne's World. Only the first one, though. I quote it so much.
The original Star Wars trilogy was great, but not Phantom Menace or later. Damn you, Jar Jar!
40-Year-Old Virgin. Absolutely hilarious.

And I basically love anything Tim Burton directs, but I still haven't seen Sweeney Todd! I also love anything action, comic-based, or ridiculously stupid comedy, like Zoolander and Anchorman. As for recent movies, I really loved Juno and Iron Man, and I just saw Wall-E this past weekend...it was great!

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The Lord of the Rings
The Nightmare Before Christmas
This Is Spinal Tap
Yes, yes, yes, and yes!

Hmm... the ones I remember right now:

LotR: I count them as one (they were one big book after all, but if I had to choose it would be Fellowship. Closeley followed by RotK. I'm not as keen on tTT because the extended cut stays in Helm's Deep for, like, an hour. I still love it though.)

Sweeney Todd: I just love Helena Bonham Carter and Tim Burton. End Of.

Pan's Labyrinth: I only saw this recently, and it was good, but it wouldn't be on here if not for that ending. Just wow. And the Pale Man is the single creepiest monster ever

Kill Bill: Again, these films really are one. They work so much better as a whole, cause part two doesn't hold up so well on its own. I'll only say one more thing: THE MUSIC!!!!

Romeo + Juliet: The Luhrman version of course. I've said it before, and I'll say it again; this is what Shakespeare is supposed to be like. It wasn't all stuffy back when he was alive, and it shouldn't be now. I can even deal with Leonardo DiCaprio, cause Claire Danes is awesome enough for the two of them.

I'm going to say one of the Harry Potter films. They aren't the best films by any standard, but they are some of my favourites. I love HP, and the films just make me happy. Except Gambon. He's just silly. Maggie Smith is God though.

One more. My Neighbour Totoro. If you haven't seen it, you really need to. You'll be grinning like a ...like a.....well, a person that grins a lot for days afterwards.

And of course, anything else by Tim Burton makes the list, but that would make it far too long.

In no particular order....

Imagine Me & You
PS: I Love You
Pirates OTC Trilogy
Stepmom
The Pursuit of Happiness
The Bucket List
"21"
Monsters, Inc.
The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants
Georgia Rule

There's probably more that I'm forgetting, but those definitely all come to mind. "The Secret Garden" and "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" are also childhood favourites of mine, but I haven't watched them in a dog's age. I also watched "Great Expectations" for the first time a while back. It's not the type of movie I'd expect to like: I loved it though!

I had forgotten about a lot of these movies, it's cool to hear the titles again! :)

This is forever changing, but here are mine, in no particular order:

- The Lost Boys (one of the defining vampire movies)
- The Breakfast Club (THE defining movie of the 1980's)
- Fight Club (mindblowing in plot and execution)
- Pirates Of The Carribean (proves that a children's summer movie can still have good acting in it)
- This Is Spinal Tap (one of the funniest films ever made)
- The Matrix (the greatest action film of the 90's)
- Ferris Bueler's Day Off (come on, who DIDN'T want to be Ferris after seeing that movie?!)
- The Football Factory (Danny Dyer is Britain's best new actor IMO)
- Sid & Nancy (Oldman is absolutely mesmorizing as Sid Vicious)
- Scarface (First you get the money. When you have the money you get the power, and when you have the power...then...then you get the women ;))

I find it really hard to narrow films down to a top ten, mostly because I could split them up into my moods and what I like to watch when, Like films to cheer me up when I'm down, Films that make me think, Films That make me lose myself etc etc. If it went by quality of films, I would find it hard to put films like 'Dogma' up with cinematic greats, but they touch me in different ways, so I think they deserve mention together. That may not make sense. So I'm just going to write Ten films I enjoy watching
(In No order)

Oh, Braveheart, forgot that one. It's great also. Mel Gibson is a master in it + the fact he also directed it makes it really wow...

10 huh? This will be hard!

In no paticular order...

1.) Toy Story.....You can tell Joss was involved at one point, the banter is fantastic. It truelly captured my imigantion and had been something every kid dreams about "They're alive!"....plus it had a cool story behind it, jealousy, getting lost, ammends, finding home. I just love this movie.

2) Peter Pan....You've got pirates, rum, a giant croc, a flying ship, a hot blonde (wink ;) it's tink), sword fights, an elf, an indian princess, canons, a base called freaking 'hangmans tree', mermaids "we were only trying to drown her" and in general a total non comformity, the hell with political correctness, cartoon. There is a rum drinking drunk smittie and children smoking a peace pipe. I sort of like this movie

3.) The original Star Wars trilogy.... (with a Greedo murdering Han Solo) My first sci fi love...I need not say more.

4.) Cady Shack...... perhaps the only way (short of happy gilmore) that I'll ever find golf any fun...but funny enough to make up for any joy the sport otherwise deprives me of.

5.) Say Anything.....both me and my wifes favorite romantic flick, alot of good memories revolve around the airing of the movie. Plus John Cusack is freaking awsome.

6.) Gross Point Blank....again with Cusack goodness, plus the mighty Dan Aykroyd! A movie about Assassins and and a high school reunion and the girl that got away, and it's sorta a dark comedy with the way Martin (main character) acts, from therapy to trying to get the girl, to how he beacame who he is and where he's going.

7.) National Lampoons Christmas Vacation....Chevy Chases curse rant is unmatched with the funny. Add in Uncle Eddie and his RV with the calssic "Merry Christmas, Sh!tters full." and you just get good times. Its a tradition in my household every Thanksgiving we watch it, and I still laugh.

8.) Highlander....Queen does the soundtrack, plus the movie isn't that bad with its whole immortals in a conflict spanning the ages, had that little known actor who gave a suprisingly good performance ....Sean whats his name? (Just kidding, he's another one of my favorite actors)

9.) Unforgiven.......... Best Western Ever, in my opinion. Best cast in a western putting on their best performances in a western with probably my favorite story for a western. Moral of that story....Don't let the retired gun fighter start drinking. It's ending had one of the funniest lines ever, when Clint's trying to leave town in the down pour.

10.) Mr. Mom.........every Saturday when my wifes at work, and Sunday if I let her sleep in...this film is like a documentary...

honorable mentions

Army of Darkness.............. great movie that is in the same line of campy goodness as Buffy,

30 days of night................It's like Red Dawn, but with vampires! if not for that scene with the child vampire and the axe it would have rated higher, I really hated that part. It redeemed itself with its ending though.
