SPIKE: I must be a noble vampire. (Buffy looks dubious) A good guy. On a mission of redemption. I help the hopeless. (chuckles) I'm a vampire with a soul.
BUFFY: (frowning) A vampire with a soul? (beat) Oh my god, how lame is that?

Made me chuckle this did, anyone else notice this i thought it was pretty obvious but still hilarious, even a tie in with Cordy's answer phone message from Season One of Angel.

I think it was a pretty obvious send-up to Angel. AND hilarious. Because, yeah, when you put it that way, "How lame is that?!"

Yeah, that moment is always worth a good chuckle!

Very Funny. But also interesting because at his core, sub-conciously, Spike wants to be like Angel and probably always has.

I don't think that Spike wants to be like Angel as much as he just wants some of the things that belong to Angel, and only that because he knows that it will irritate Ol' Broody.

I would argue that Spike wants to be like Angel. Angel was his teacher, Angel was his yoda, Angel was his mentor. The reason that Spike was a successful vampire was because he was taught by the best and before there was loathing there was respect and admiration. You can see that in many of the flashback sequences (FFL and TGIQ, for example). Fast-forward a few years and Angel is doing his thang in LA, being a good-guy vampire, helping the helpless and Spike, because he fancies a pretty little slayer, because of a confusing chip in his brain, because of Dawn, is starting to question who he is, his place in the world, his vampiric nature blah, blah blah.....and once again, Spike looks to his old mentor for guidance - even if at the time of Tabular Rasa that desire is still sub-concious.

Spike does not want to be like Angel. He wants all the attention Angel gets, and wants his title as Top Vampire. He's always been 2nd in command to Angelus. But im sure he dosnt want to be like Angel, lifestyle/personalitywise, but i do think Spike wants what Angels got.

That's one of the quotes why this episode is so funny (though I feel that 'Randy Giles??? ...etc' can't be beaten...that was just too hilarious)
Buffy's reaction is just the best. Does anyone else have this mental image ever since, where Buffy tells Angel how lame his whole redeeming thing is?

Yeah, there's a definite parallel between the way he envies what Angel has with how Faith envies what Buffy has. Spike and Faith both have to contend with being called "the other one," no matter how hard they try to get beyond it. That's one reason why, sadly, neither Buffy and Faith, nor Angel and Spike will ever actually be friends, as much as we might want them to be.

I don't nessesarily agree with that. Maybe in regards to Buffy he does - as in, he wishes Buffy loved him like she loves/ed Angel. As far I understand, and Spike makes this very clear - he can't stand Angel! He thinsk he's dull and whiny.
