What did you thought of this episode?
I thought it was one of the bests in season 4. They couldn't speak, couldn't say a word.
I liked the song the little girl sang on the beggining. I think it was like this:

I can't even shout
I can't even cry
The Gentleman
Are coming by

Looking thought windows
Knoking on doors
They need to take seven
And they might take yours

You can't call your mum
You can't say a word
You're goind die screaming
And you won't be heared!

I thought this was a fantastic episode, but I hated it. lol :) Great writing, great acting-especially for not being able to speak. As of all the epps I have ever seen...the freggin most scariest s***. I had actually seen part of it before I became a fan and I remember telling my friend, Rayne that I never realized Buffy was such a morbid and scary show. She explained that was just an intense epp. Scary scary scary, just the though makes me...<shuddering>

What was for you the best part of the episode?
I liked when Xander thought that Spike was drinking Anya, so he just knock him to the ground and started beating him... and then, Anya got up and shown him that she was ok.
Giles and his girlfriend (Don't remember the name) were happy (at least it seamed) for Xander to stand up for naya, but then Anya ruined it all, by asking XZander; ina gestual way, to go f*** (I think you got what I meant)

I think Hush is pretty much hands-down the best episode of Buffy. You're right Chas - scary as hell (that dude Olivia sees in the window!!!) and so well done. The silence/communication thing, great f/x (I love the gentlemen floating!), super amazingly creepy bad guys, the "we need to talk" ending, superb directing from Joss and to top it all off it has my favorite all-time buffy conversation!

Riley: So what have you got going on tonight?
Buffy: Patrolling.
Riley: Patrolling?
Buffy: Err....petroleum!
Riley: Petroleum?
Buffy: Uh huh.
Riley: Tonight, you have crude oil.

I thought that scene was amazing! I guess I hate Riley much less than most people. I recognize that he and Buffy have almost zero chemisty in most scenes (although I thought he and Willow had good chemistry - I actually thought they were going to end up together before Tara appeared), but they were great together in that opening scene. I love the line... "When I kiss you, it will make the sun go down" There's something very hot about that.

"Hush" is one of the only BUFFY eps that had me scared. It was greatly written by Joss, but there's not a lot of interesting events or relationships ('cept for Willow and Tara) that I really care about. Same goes for the rest of S4.

I love this epie, my fav of season 4!!
I was so scared of the stratjacket guys, (I have a real phobia of crazy people seriously!)

But the acting in this was great the fact of how well they comunicated without speach was amazing, I would have to say "Congrats Joss one of your best ever!"

The Gentlemen, werent exactly gentle, but it was a great episode.
I love the way the scoobs communicate, without words.
One of my favourite ever scenes is in Hush, where Giles is doing his 'lecture' to them. Xander misreads gestures, Anya eats popcorn, and Giles draws Buffy's hips too wide! lol!
Great episode!

thus ep was my 1st fave ep before i got into buffy so much that i couldn't pick a fave ep anymore.

it's just so ingenious and i love the bit where spike takes the piss out of anya- also the bit where he does the fingers to xander- i love it when spike and xander live together- like in s7- my 2 fave men in 1 place, squabbling at each other!

Hush is freaking scary!

I hate the gentlemen with their suits and silver teeth and bald heads....very creepy.

And the guys in the straight jackets with their rattling chains?

When Olivia is looking out the window in Giles's apartment and the one guy walks by with that start of music... oh my gosh, i yelped the first time (in fact, sometimes I still do yelp at that part)

I love it though when Riley and buffy are in the house at the same time and they whip around to point their weapons at each other
I was like, oh crap. here we go.

and then their heads exploding... happiness. the scary men were gone.

oh-- and how about Giles and his overhead presentation? Hilarious.

oh hey.... though of another thing that I like about this episode.

I love it when Xander wakes up and realized he doesn't have a voice... and then of course blames it on Spike.

But the best part is when he calls buffy on the phone! hilarious. Just love the look on the faces of all parties involved.

The whole episode was quality, but that has to be one of the best parts.

The first time Hush aired in the UK, I tuned in half way through and it was on The Gentlemen, it was so scary. Scariest demons ever to appear on Buffy.

One of my favourite scenes (apart from those already mentioned) is when Buffy and Willow come to Giles house, and Willow writes "Hi Giles" on her board thingy, and Giles hugs her. I just found it so sweet.

One of my favorite episodes. It's just sooo good. And you get to see Tara and those scary gentlemen. And I think it was pretty smart of Tara to look up a spell to make people speak again, but then the evil (and creepy) Gentlemen with their little dudes came and destroyed it.

I really liked this episode. It was funny and scary as hell. The Gentlemen are definately the scariest monsters in the Buffyverse, IMO. I really jumped out of my skin when one went past the window at Giles' house...lol...And the ending was good as well, the way it followed straight on into the next episode.

I loved that episode.. The gentlemen scared the crp outta me though!! lol. just their freaky smiles and the way they glide above the floor. but i thought it was pretty funny when the gang couldn't talk and buffy was trying to explain that she could try and kill the gentlemen with a stake, and she did that hand movement.. (you know the one im talking about!!) lol. and they thought she meant something else... :)

Can anyone give me a hell yeah if the gentleman gave them nightmares! I have to say out of all of the creatures in the Whedonverse, the gentleman were the only ones to make my skin crawl. Whats worse than a palefaced stranger who smiles at you constantly, but refuses to say anything! :winking11

This was an excellent eppy and should have won the emmy.

What are you people voting for.

I loved the bit when Giles is explaining what the demons are and his drawings are funny, which we later get to see again when he is teaching Cho-Ahn about vampires. Incidentally the music in the background is from a british show called Jonathan Creek whch Anthong Stuart Head starred in for a couple of episodes.

I also like the part where Buffy and Riley draw weapons on each other, very cool. I read somewhere that Joss's fav weapon for Buffy is the crossbow and I have to admit she does look better with a crossbow than a sword.

Buffy's scream was a bit long (if that was me I would have passed out) but it was cool though.

A for the Gentlemen, damn there were soooo creepy. I hate the bit when Olivia is looking out the window and hey pass by woah, my stomach rolls over even when I think about it.

I think that this episode, Helpless and Converssations With Dead People were scary.

What other Buffy episodes have scared you?

The one part in season 6 episode Afterlife when the demon they created was coming up the stairs after buffy and its face was right in the camera, geeze that wasn't the best looking face of a demon there could be. I thought it was creepy at first.

Slayer,The
07-23-2004, 11:58 AM
Never been really creeped out like in a horror way, but there have been some of the scarier episodes:

Helpless : Buffy running from the vampire up the stairs is really good, a lot of tenseness

Bargaining : Kept me wondering if Buffy was gonna be the same, kinda creepy her being brought back and all

And the episode where Warren kills Katrina, forget the name, Season 6, but that was a really great eppy!

:) You guys have good choices

Hush was the best episode ever of Season 4. It was awsome how they couldn't talk or nething. It was really different from all the noice that usually goes on. And the Gentlemen were really creepy. Epescially when Giles' girlfriend is looking at the window and one of them passes by suddenly. Really cool! And I liked it how Riley and Buffy caught each other fighting.

I don't think Buffy is that scary.. But the Gentlemen are some of the scariest evils on the show..

This is a great episode, really funny and at the same time full of emotions and all that.
The best thing is that Tara is in it, the first episode with her, and she is so shy..! And it's cute how obvious it is that she likes Willow immediatly, oh..

(This was also before I started hating Riley, so he didn't ruin it at all..)

Oh man, do I love Hush or what. I didn't find it scary or anything like that, but it was kind of unnerving. The idea of not being able to speak just freaks me out, seeing as how we all depend so much on talking.

Best part, in my opinion, is the introduction of Tara. ::Looks at avatar:: Yep. That's the best part.

Close second is Anya's lovely gesture, after Xander "saves" her from Spike.

'Hush' is, IMHO, a masterpiece; a modern day fairy tale with some of the scariest villians ever seen and proof that even TV shows can achieve movie-level grandeur. This is one of the two scariest episodes of the show ever (the second being 'Conversations With Dead People') and moves many of the seasonal plot lines along; Buffy and Riley have their first kiss, Anya realizes that Xander does love her and introduces the lovely Amber Benson as Tara (who doesn't see, in retrospect, that the hand-holding scene has a major sexual undertone). This might be the best Buffy episode ever.

Hehe, I thought they'd kiss that second. Well almost, I really thought they would realize the crush at once since it was so obvious to me (maybe they did).

One fan fic I read that went behind the scenes of Willow and Tara's relationship had a definate spark between them in that moment, but Willow was still operating on hetero mode at that point. But you can see by Tara's face at the end of the episode that she already has a huge crush on Willow.

Just found the board here, and joined up - maybe this isn't quite the place to say Hi, but I was intrigued to read what all you guys thought of HUSH, seeing as you know what you're talking about and I don't, although I remember being totally creeped out when I first saw the episode.

My dear friend Doug Jones played the Lead Gentleman, a role of which he is inordinately fond, so I thought I'd do some homework - and here I am! S'cuse the newbie ...

i think that "hush" was one of joss' greatest masterpieces and an emmy is onnly one of the awards he should have won. as far as i go - i don't afraid, it's really hard for anything movie-ish to scare me, i can yawn through movies that are supposed to be shitless scary. but hush and the gentlemen didn't only freak me out, but i hd an actual nightmare after the first time i saw the episode - my brother told me that i was talking in my sleep lol, i think i dreamt i was the princess who lost her voice.
this episode was amazing beyond words, the gentlemen - the myth, the haunting presence... perfect. and the worst thing about hush is just how real it is. when there's a scary out there, you know it, you know when it comes, youknow what it is. but how do you react if one morning you wake up and someone has taken your voice away?
that's just it - you can never know when they could strike, you just wake up one morning and that's that. even thoughthey're fictional supposedly, you can't help but believe they could get to you as well. in the back of our minds i think every single one of us thought for a split second - it feels so real, it could happento me too.

Damn, Hush was a good episode!

It was probably the single most creepy episode of the entire series and the Gentlemen were easily the most frightening demons. My nephew is something of a Buffy and Angel fan due to spending way too much time with his uncle ;) and likes to think of himself as pretty brave despite only being 7 but he wouldn't sit through all of this episode. Totally freaked him out!

Hush was a wicked episode!! I don't understand why it scared people though. I mean I know that it was meant to be scary and everything, but I wasn't scared at all. ::dk::

I loved the bit just before they lose their voices when Xander ties Spike to the chair and Spike makes fun of his relationship with Anya:

Spike adopts a high pitched almost falsetto voice - like Anya.

Spike: "Xander don't you care about me."
Xander: "Shut up!"
Spike: "We never talk."
Xander holds up a warning finger.
Xander: "Shut up!"
Spike: " Xaaannnder."
Xander: "Shut up!"

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

And Also the bit where Xander thinks that Spike is drinking Anya and he tackles him.

Xander sees Anya and jumps up and kisses her and hugs her.
Anya is puzzled then pleased.
Spike gets up.
Xander is still hugging Anya.
He stops, looks at Spike with a distressed expression,
shrugs, and kisses Anya again.
Spike looks annoyed.
Spike --{{unreadable}}--
Olivia looks at Giles and back at the couple and she is smiling.
Giles looks annoyed.
Anya -- you wanna go {{someplace}} and --
Anya does a gesture with her hands putting her finger into
the fist in the other hand. She also nods slightly.
Xander and Anya start to leave.
Spike looks even more annoyed.

I found this episode more funny than scary, lol.

I loved that bit, that was my favourite but i have to agree that was the best episode of Buffy, i mean it must've been hard for the actors to not speak they must've been so tempted to speak. And the part where Olivia was looking out of the window, and one of the gentlemen went past it made me jump so bad, but i liked that ep it was the best i thought.

Have to agree, the patrolling/petroleum scene is one of the best Buffy/Riley scenes ever! But I definitely thought Hush was scary. The Gentlemen freaked em out beyond compare. I actually had nightmares about them, and I was 13 the first time I saw it.

I LOVED the little hand motion Anya made indicating she wanted to go 'do it'. *L* Just classic Anya.

This is my all time favorite Buffy episode!

I agree the lack of speech makes for extreme funnies :D

Yay, I finally got to watch Hush today, (as I'm currently going season by season on dvd). This episode is definitely my favourite because I get so involved, especially when the action begins, with the Buffy/Riley patrolling and the Tara-chasing.

I remember totally getting fooled when Willow goes to open her door and the door that opens up is actually occupied by one of the Gents. So does this mean that Tara was one of the hearts that the Gentlemen wanted? Or were they having some fun with her?

I loved how the Gentlemen's hands looked so bony. Maybe I'll be a Gent for Halloween! Yeah right. I wouldn't be able to hold that smile for too long. Oh, and the music is excellent too. It's especially eerie with the woman's voice singing.

Joss did such an amazing job on this episode *Another point for Joss* It was an awesome idea never seen a show do anything quite like it.

I love this episode so much! It scares the *@£" out of me everytime I see it. I think it's the fact that there is no speech in it and that the music is very freaky. Love it though. We get to see tara and willow first realise they have a connection and it's when buffy first finds out about riley. Good stuff!

Like many of you, I found this episode to be less scary than it was hyped up to be.

I had not even finished season 2 yet when I got season 4 for christmas and I jumped right to "Hush" without hesitation.

Comments:
The auditorium scene with the overhead projector is classic TV...especially with the Xander responses.

Anya's finger gesture to Xander was a bit confusing at first. I thought it was some sort of wedding ring comment until I saw the reaction of Spike and Giles.

Spike's Anya-like voice...good stuff

The catchy tune from the beginning sticks in your head forever.

Gentlemen? Scary enough to make you need to change your pants when they float by the window.

"The Invaders" it ain't, unfortunately. The Gentlemen were creepy.

Just out of curiosity, in carrying out the first phase of their mission, did the Gentlemen also take away everyone's hand-eye coordination (cf. a car crashed into a fire hydrant)?! :D

I really liked this episode. It was creepy, and fynny, and had a lot of action in it. From the start, I knew that there was a connection between Willow and Tara and then I found out in a later episode that they became a couple. That was cool.

Okay, I just gave "Hush" another trial run, and shall comment on it a little more.

Very strong, but again, nothing groundbreaking about it (I personally think "Restless" should have been nominated for and won the Emmy). Performances and direction were uniformly fine. The actual deaths of the Gentlemen, though, were anti-climactic. Was I supposed to laugh? Was Whedon drunk when he thought of it?

One thing I like about this episode is that Giles actually gets to make himself useful. One of the problems with Season Four is that the writers more-or-less relegated him to deadweightedness. This episode is not guilty of that.

The musical score is very eerie and fits like a glove with Whedon's overt style of horror.

That the Gentlemen's final purpose is never explained neither adds to nor detracts from the episode. On one hand, revealing it could have spiced the episode up; on the other, it could have instead made it clichéd and mundane.

This episode was and is so scary it's not even funny. the music terrifies me... it's so haunting. I love it though.

I personally rarely get scared when watching TV/movies, I don't think I found a single episode scary, but I do have a few friends who almost weren't able to finish this episode. Many many people seem to think the gentlemen are creepy.. and I guess they are, but only in a "good" way, imo.. I think they are very awesome and well, love Hush, brilliant episode :)

This was an episode that indeed had the quality of a fairy tale. After seeing it for the first time I recognized it was brilliantly conceived, still it was a long time before I wanted to watch it again. I can't say I was scared, but there was something very disquieting about it.

The cast was tested as they had to act out their roles in pantomime, without dialogue, and they proved more than equal to the task.

Tis was very scary eppy. I finally watched it a few nights ago and it was so creepy. I love their make-up and the music score played a big part in the episode which I liked. Overall, it was a great episode and it was very creative, and a great one to watch around Halloween!

yeah this eppy was pretty freaky and those gentlemen guys are really wierd and scary.i think this eppy was really clever and cool because they couldnt speak and they had to show how they felt in a different way.plus it was really funny when they were in the lecture hall and Giles was doing his slideshow, some of the actions that Buffy and Xander did when they meant something else was really funny,i think that was the writers chance to do some funny stuff relating to sex and not get into too much trouble for it.

the gentlemen were probably the creepiest villains in either show. I mean, Angelus, Dru, and Caleb were all creepy, but that was due to their actions and how they affected the characters. The gentlemen were just creepy in their actions, appearances, etc.

I've heard that the reason Joss Whedon wrote this episode was because critics were saying that the actors in Buffy can't act, and that the success of the show was purely based on the shows cheesy dialogue. So, he wrote this episode, and it was nominated for a bunch of awards, if I'm not mistaken... looks like he showed them!

This is by far my favourite episode of Buffy. My favourite scene is the beginning, when Buffy is having her prophetic dream, and she turns around to see one of the Gentlemen standing behind her. That quick flash scared the crap out of me.

Also, the last scene with Buffy and Riley, when they "need to talk".. they were forced to be silent by the Gentlemen for the last however long (couple of days?), they finally have their voices back, and can't think of a word to say. GENIUS!

Hush is one of the best buffy episodes ever! Its a toss up between Hush and Restless being my favorite episode. Hush was extremely creative. I have never seen anything like that before. I loved the no talking and the music they would play (it made it creepy). I loved the part when they are all sitting in the auditorium and Giles is trying to explain to them what the Gentlemen are and there responses to it! haha. That episode is just overall amazing in my opinion.

One of the best episodes hands down for sure! The floating creeps me out, and even their henchmen - can you say crazy freaks! reminded me a litle of the joker from batman.

but it was wild. favourite part is when Buffy asks how to kill them and she's pretending to stab...hahaah - and Anya is kinda excited

What did you thought of this episode?
I thought it was one of the bests in season 4. They couldn't speak, couldn't say a word.
I liked the song the little girl sang on the beggining. I think it was like this:

I can't even shout
I can't even cry
The Gentleman
Are coming by

Looking thought windows
Knoking on doors
They need to take seven
And they might take yours

You can't call your mum
You can't say a word
You're goind die screaming
And you won't be heared!

Ok is there somewhere that I can get this song? One more question in what scene is Andy Hallett in and how hard do you need to look to find him?

I work at night so had to record the show and watch when I got home. I put the tape in and watched on my 13 inch TV that I had set up in front of my treadmill. Keep in mind that at the time I was just under 300 pounds, so I usually didn't do very much at a time on the treadmill.... this episode was so engrossing that I watched the entire 42 minutes while walking on the treadmill and never noticed til the episode was over.

I agree. With a show that is so dialogue based having almost an entire episode with no talking at all was a big risk. The actors did an amazing job.

My favorite scenes from Hush would be:

When Giles is briefing the Scoobs, Buffy makes the "staking" motion but instead gets weird looks because it looks like "masturbating" motion. The look on Xander and Willow's face was priceless. I love how Buffy rolls her eyes at their immaturity and frustratingly pulls out her stake to justify the motion. Classic.

Also Xander beating up Spike because he thought Anya had been bitten. Poor Giles is always around when Anya and Xander get in the mood for sex. Giles' expressions at them are always comedic to watch.

The scene where Buffy and Riley turn around with weapons drawn to face each other for the first time in their respective roles is cool too.

Hush was such a creepy episode and an awesome one at that. It should have won an Emmy. The look of the Gentlemen and just their regal way of acting when they would kill someone to get their hearts. Just creepy. Almost reminded me of the classic "Doctor Giggles".

I've just rewatched it an hour or so ago, and not to be badmouthing a masterpiece but I noticed one thing:

Anyone else think the makeup on the "supporting" Gentlemen (not the two we see for most of the episode) is CRAP? I mean, watch the scene when they're applauding the leader when he comes back with the heart and look at the guy to the right. I can't bring myself to believe for half a second that thing in his face is supposed to be a mouth instead of a sloppily patched together, non-moving full-face latex mask. (You can't help but compare it to the excellent and downright creepy makeup of the two leaders, and it fails miserably in comparison!)

Aside from that, as I said, a masterpiece. It far surpassed "great" (the looks Spike shoots Xander alone would have sufficed for making this ep great!), and I almost had forgotten just how scary/creepy it really is!

The Ferg

I don't think the makeup is crap, but I do think that they don't look very scary at all compared to the 2 lead Gentleman.

I loved this episode, I think it's the one I've watched most since getting into Buffy.

I love the idea that people don't start communicating until they stop talking, though how true this is in real life I don't know - I don't think it's too likely that anywhere will experience the same sort of thing!

I think that the Gentlemen are the creepiest villains to appear on Buffy; something about the way they move and their smiles... *shudder*

Overall a very good episode.

The explanation scene might be the best ever in Buffy.
Giles bloody pictures.
Buffy getting upset over the picture of her.
Everyone looking at Buffy when she trying to say that she will slay them.
Willow doing the death act.
And of course Xander missunderstanding of the heart thing.

It is beyond funny, I absolutely love that whole scene!
