@Cordelia, how do you make that 'over-lighted' effect?

edb
01-02-2004, 06:26 AM
Allycat - To make the 'over-lighted' effect I just use the brushes making sure that the colour I have selected is white, then instead of having them normal I alter it to Colour Dodge and voila! It gives that 'light' effect - you can do this on both Adobe Photoshop and Paintshop too. :) You can also vary the degree of brightness but changing the % from 100 to less if you require the light to be not so bright etc

umm also...HELP! ive just got Adobe Photoshop and im a little more lost. ive been looking at tutoirals on making special effects and it amazes me what Photoshop can do. but i cant make banners how do i get Jpg images in my banner? it jst dosent seem to be working for me.

Thanks for the compliment!!

It's a good idea although I don't class myself as expert enough to tell others how to do stuff - I'm still picking up how to do stuff all the time too. ;) I'm sure that there are plenty of other skilled graphics members on here to that would be willing to share their advice/know-how on the graphics front so I will create a thread and stake it in here for us all to use and exchange tips etc. :)

If I do it at 100 % the whole picture turns white. If I do it at 50, it does get brighter, but not the fuzzy thing.

What I tend to do is use one of my brushes - I have downloaded quite a few good ones most of them I have used on my banners just recently - that way then when you paint with one of the brushes on colour dodge the whole pic doesn't turn white but just looks as though it's been lighted up.

This is an example of using a brush, colour chosen white, on colour dodge at 100 %.

and here's the same pic but using 50%

As suggested by BuffyUker, I have posted this thread so that all us graphic loving' members can post and share all our tips and techniques for how to achieve different sorts of effect etc when using either Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.

Perhaps if people know of good resource sites too, such as places to download brushes/textures/backgrounds etc then they could PM me and I can add them into this post so they are all in one place and easy for us all to find and share. :)

Nocturna - great for grunge brushes for Adobe Photoshop (http://nocturna.net/brushes/)
Misprinted Type - More Photoshop Brushes to download (Under Airbag in the Menu) (http://www.misprintedtype.com/mainpage.htm)
VBrush - A really great site with brushes to download plus links/search engine for even more resources for Photoshop! (http://veredgf.fredfarm.com/vbrush/main.html)

Ooooooo.............'lol' Sorry. Oh, that's really easy to do.;)

Just :-

Filter
Gaussian Blur - range between 1-3 depending on how fuzzy/blurry you want - most often I use 3.;)
Edit
Fade Gaussian Blur
Hard Light or Soft light depending on the look you want - sometimes screen works well as well if you want a softer, fuzzy light look.

Let me know if that works for you but it is what I used on the Passion banner with Giles and also the banner with my kids on. :)

Allycat
01-02-2004, 09:12 AM
Right that's the one, I figured the first two steps. What exactly does the fade option do?

BuffyUKer
01-02-2004, 09:13 AM
hmmm this is a dope question but i dont know how to get an image into the canvas :( if you could tell me how id be greatfull :)

edb
01-02-2004, 09:16 AM
It sort of gets rid of the real blur and gives it a sort of glossy look - that's using either the hard or soft light option when fading - without fading it just looks really blurry and you can't really make out any definition in the image. I have tried fading using the other effetcs such as multiply/screen/colour burn etc and they all give different effects, some better than others depedning on the look you are after - guess it's a case of trial and error. :D

Allycat
01-02-2004, 09:20 AM
Thanks Cordy

@BuffyUKer: Select the image, by clicking on it. (Thus selecting it as an object) Then Edit > Free Transform and then change it's size. If you hold down the shift button, while doing this, the picture will keep it's proportions and will merely scale. If you have space left in the picture, you can do Image > Crop to remove it. You can alter the canvas size, by Image > Canvas Size.

My preference is to always create a blank canvas to work on - as in make a new image, then I just open all the images I intend to use on it - then what you have to do is to drag the images into your 'canvas' - to do this make sure that the image you want to drag is the one you are clicked on, for want of a better word, then along the tools at the left hand side, you click on the top left hand tool - the one with the little arrow and cross, then basically just click and drag your image onto your canvas.

It's very easy once you know how - when I first had Photshop I expected it to work like Paintshop Pro and this one was of the things I had to get used to 'lol'

Edited to say See why I don't think I would be good at explaining how to do things 'lol' Allycat simplified way better than I did! :D

lol! thanx you two that helped alot :)

Edit : and now here is my first photoshop tutorial :D Snow effect

ok i figure a step by step is the simple wasy to explain the how2

initial image http://www.angelfire.com/vamp/buffyuker0/B4Snoweffect01.jpg

01. File > New (contents - set to transparent)
02. Set the fourground colour to black (#000000)
03. Filter > Noise > Add noise (set 'Amount' to 70% - 'Distribution' to Gaussian and make sure the 'Monochromatic' box is checked)
04. Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur (make the 'Radius' 1.5 pixels)
05. Image > Ajustments > Levels ('input levels' 90 - 1.00 - 120... 'Output levels' 0 - 255)
06. Edit > Define Pattern (name it snow or something)
07. Open the image that you want to have snow on.
08. Paint bucket tool > (Fill - 'Pattern' {select your 'Snow' pattern} Mode - 'Screen')

end result -

http://www.angelfire.com/vamp/buffyuker0/Snoweffect01.jpg

thats it! easy as pie :D it can be done it 10seconds if you know what your doing.

Cordelia: In your other banners, you have all these weird signs as an overlay or something all over the pic. What is that?

edb
01-11-2004, 11:14 AM
They are just various brushes that I have used on dodge. :)

Allycat
01-11-2004, 12:23 PM
So, that's what you use brushes for?

edb
01-11-2004, 12:27 PM
I use them for alot of things, that is just one of them. It really depends on what sort of look I want to achieve. Sometimes I use them on dodge, hard light, burn, or normal - it varies also with what colour you have them on too, like white is the best when using brushes on dodge, dark colours don't work well at all. :)

Allycat
01-14-2004, 06:47 AM
However dodging on dark colors doesn't work well with white, what else can I use?

edb
01-14-2004, 06:55 AM
Not sure, I've always found that dodging on dark colours doesn't work well full stop whatever colour you use. It works best when used on light colours. You might want to try hard light then fade, or perhaps Pin, vivid or hard mix then fade, maybe that might work although I can't be 100% sure. Sorry!

Jman82188
01-14-2004, 10:15 AM
how do you fade?

Xander
01-26-2004, 03:00 PM
Fading can be done by getting the image you want, then:

1. Use the eclipse selector tool
2. Selecting the area you don't want faded
3. Go to select>feather. Use settings generally between 30-50. Pick one for the moment and you can come back and mess around later.
4. Go to select>inverse
5. Making sure the colour you want to fade to is the foreground colour go to edit>fill and just fill the foreground colour.

It needs experimenting but eventually you can do something like the image of Charisma on the left here: http://members.lycos.co.uk/ashsan/image/Charisma.jpg

Allycat
01-26-2004, 03:45 PM
Picture isn't working. Can you give us another link, 'cause I have no idea what this fade is.

Jman82188
01-26-2004, 08:40 PM
thanks for the tip, though the link isnt working for me either. also, is there a way to fade to another pic instead of a color?

Xander
01-27-2004, 12:21 PM
http://www.good-tutorials.com/search.php?q=montage&submit.x=0&submit.y=0 go on the first, and then the second.

Anyway, put Charisma as the file name, not cordelia. http://members.lycos.co.uk/ashsan/image/Cordelia.jpg is correct.

thanks for the tutorial! i havent figured out how to layer mask in photoshop but i also have psp and it seems to be working in that

edb
03-23-2004, 08:45 AM
That's a good tutorial Niobe. :)

I have never actually used the layer masks - I just erase and manually blend but that way is miles quicker for wallpapers and stuff. Took me couple of mins to realise that you had to 'Apply Layer mask' each time otherwise it will only let you apply the mask once 'lol' I was getting really frustrated and couldn't figure why it wasn't working, then I tried 'Apply layer Mask' after each time and it worked a treat then.

So thanks for that, ::evil2::

Niobe Kaftan
03-23-2004, 09:22 AM
i use psp as well as ps and yeah you can get brushes for it too but its rare. but i think beautiful sin do them all you do is download them into your psp folder there should be on that just says brushes then when you open it up click on the paint brush and there should be a button that says cutom click that and a long list of all your brushes and more pops up and just pick one and there you have a brush

:D im really glad the tutorial helped im gonna redo it and creat my own little tips site sometime soon so i'll be able to put it all in real detail

ok, I'm really new at this graphics making thing. I've actually never done it before. I just got a demo version of Paintshop Pro and while I have it I wanted to see if I could figure out how to make some banners. I've only got it for a little while before I have to pay so any help I could get quickly would be great!

Ok, I really have no idea even were to start to make a banner. How do you compine all the pictures into one spot? How do you make the banners rectangular? How do you make the pictures all fade into one another so that they look like one picture?

I know this is alot to ask, but any help you could give me would be great! Thanks!

Jman82188
04-15-2004, 10:04 PM
you wanna start by checking out the tutorials. one very important thing to learn about is layers which is how you can move each picture independantly and make them fade into each other. you make the banners rectangular by opening a new image (try 500 by 150, its pretty easy) and pasting pictures into it. it can be confusing and frustrating at first, but dont give up, because you'll get better with practice. but mostly read tutorials and learn how to use the tools. if you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM, IM, or email me.

I just got PS7 and I'm pretty new to all this kinda stuff so if this question is really stupid lol...it's because of the newness :)

When I select an section of an image, I almost always get the message that says:
No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection lines won't be visible.

What am I doing wrong??

Xander
07-04-2004, 12:26 PM
When you are usign the tool check towards the top it might say "feather" then have a box next to it with a certain number of pixels in, eg "20px". If it does what happens is you make a selection but it sorta shrinks it, hard to explain. That might be the problem.

Joan

I'm new to the graphic stuff.
I finally got a graphics program after over a year wanting one.

I have Paint shop pro 9.
Can someone please tell the basics to making a banner and icon/avatar?
And a place of finding some tutorials?

Allycat

Basically open a new file with a banner size. (There's a predefined size in PS.) Open a favourite picture of yours. Drag the picture into the empty banner. Then go to edit, free transform; you'll be able to fiddle with the size and get it to fit in the banner... remember to hold down shift to avoid streching. Now use the text tool to put some text over the picture. And voila, you have your first most basic banner!!

Wesley's Sylyna
09-12-2005, 08:04 PM
It didn't work.
You mus not have Paint Shop pro, or a different version.
First the picture could not be dragged into the banner.
And second there is no free transform under edit.

:mad15:

Lyri

find an image you want to use as a banner, then right click on it and then click 'copy'
go to your banner, whatever size it is, and right click again, then click 'paste as new layer' that should work.

To make 'soft glow effect' for PSP

duplicate base image, apply gaussin blur (no more than 6), go back to base layer and make a new layer in soft light or overlay (i suggest overlay, works better), then merge layers

galathea

I use Photoshop 6.0 but I guess it works all the same. Adding pictures is a simple drag and drop action. You open your pictures, then create a new canvas in the size you wish and then simply drag and drop your pictures to that canvas.

now, this may seem like the most stupid question....but if you have one image up, how to you add another image to it? i cant do it :(

I know it's been answered but:

Open second picture --> Ctrl + A --> Copy ---> Go to first picture ---> Paste (then drag etc.)

Simple method and very quick to do.

There is probably a much easier way to do it but if you put in your writing, then copy that layer to a new document and flip it vertically, then place it back in the original document, and lower the opacity, it will look like a reflection.

does anyone know of any good tutorial sites for Paint Shop Pro?
i'm keen to learn some new techniques, but i can't find any decent tutorials.

Maybe you've already tried this site but there's tutorials with screencaps...it's not bad:

otherwise you can try to find others sites here:
http://www.psplinks.com/

hope it'll help;)

how do you resize an object on Paint shop pro 8 (make it bigger) without it becomming all blurry , or how do you adjust the blurriness

Lyri

you could try sharpening the image to fix the blurriness.
first, duplicate your image, then go to adjust - sharpeness - sharpen or sharpen more.
if you find that if getting too sharp, lowering the opactity of the layer you sharpened, until you get something you can work with.

the sharpen approach can be hit or miss, especially in PSP, but i hope this helps.

This is a stupid question but it's annoying the crap outta me and I can't fix it. How can I get my eraser in Paint Shop Pro to actually erase instead of spewing colored stuff?!

I actually have 2 questions. First how do you get the texture with the cool cracklike marks like in this avy-->http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p263/JelloShotsAndWildSex/new/btvs/btvs2.png

and second question... I've been having a problem with my avies. They look fine and normal when I look at them on my paintshop and they come out all wrong when I transfer them to photobucket. Usually when I add text or do any special adustment like Fill Flash or to the Histogram. It gets all blurry around certain places.

-CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME?? :D

i have a very amateur question. when you are blending images with very different backgrounds (like one is very light and colorful and the other is dark and dull), how do you get it to blend smoothly? sometimes i am able to work with this, but sometimes i cant, and i was wondering if there is anyone here that does that a lot and can give me tips? is there even a way to make is smoother? (and im talking photoshop here)

I'm interested in SiE's question about the cracks! Does anyone know?
With the blending question Spirit, I really try not to blend stuff like that if I can avoid it. Otherwise try to use as much negative space as possible between the two images (like the blur behind the subjects, or background). You could also try adding on more space before blending them (like cut and paste more background to make it look like more), then you can increase the feather size in photoshop, and it will blend a lot smoother.
Hope that made sense.

I had a question about this avatar I made... which I can't use on here. But it's a gif file I made in Flash. Does anyone know why it's grainy as a gif file, or if there is a site where I can upload a swf. or flash file for free?

Sometimes when I go to use "free transform" in PS, the edges of that particular image don't end up smooth (such as in this (http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w254/ImaginaryKryptonite/bangel1_112907.jpg) piece).

Does anyone know how to always make them smooth?

Hmm I hardly ever use the free transform tool Kryptonite.. not sure. Because photoshop is bitmap based, you run the risk of dodgy edges, especially when stuff isn't 300 dpi. Basically what I do is use another program Illustrator for smooth lines, especially if they are diagonal (because Illustrator uses vecta.. not sure how to spell that). Which means all the lines in that program are smooth. Sorry that didn't help much.

Hard question Cordelia ;) You should generally jump in and have a go, see what buttons do. You can always use 'step backward' or undo. A few sites have detailed intructions. But to start of, get the pics you want; open them in photoshop, then to put them in a sig go to 'new' and make a new file the size you want your sig. Then you'll see how you can copy and paste stuff onto the new file. The tool bar on the left hand side has a lot of tools that help with this. Check out this link for people more patient then me who make tutorials :) . . d a y d r e a m i n g . . because UNreality is, like, my WHOLE life (http://fractured-simplicity.net/daydreaming/)

Hmm. I don't think I often use photoshop "correctly" lol. I don't know all the technical ins and outs, but...you've figured out a way to isolate just the hair? By using the magic wand tool or a clipping path or whatever?

Once the hair is selected, isolated, I'd personally just go to the top menu bar, then go to image, then adjustments, then hue/saturation. I'd bring the saturation way down so it's almost black/gray. And you can adjust the hue as well.

You can also fine tune it, adjust it by going to image/adjustments/variations. You can add more blue, cyan, yellow, make it lighter or darker, etc, etc.

Also once you've selected it with the feather tool, if the changing colours/brightness etc isn't working too well. You can fill it with black, then fade it so it's not just flat.
So the 'marching ants' are around the hair, go to file > fill > a window will come up and you can pick to fill with black. Once this is done, go to file again, and click 'fade fill'.

Posting a question about Photoshop 6.0, does anyone know how to make your text wrap around a photo like this... Photoshop Text Wrap - Faking Text Wrap In Photoshop, Page 3 (http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photoshop-text/text-effects/text-wrap/page-3.php)

I heard something about making "work paths" but whenever I try my text ignores the shapes. Arg! Any ideas? Maybe? ???

I have the earlier versioin to you, but here`s how I would do it in Photoshop 6.0 (this should be similar to your program :))

Open a new, blank document

Using the type tool, type in your text as you usually would

Now, click your Palettes tab on the top right corner of the text toolbar (it will either say Palettes or it will look kind of like lines with bullets on them)

A small window should pop up. When it does, click on the small arrow in the top right corner of the window.

Make sure that Faux Bold and Faux Italic options are both UNCHECKED

Once you have unchecked them both, click on the Warp Text tool on the text toolbar (this button is right next to the one that you just clicked to get into Palettes) :)

Under Style, click the Arc option and adjust the bend until it is to the desired curve. Click Okay when you`re finished!

That should do it! Let me know if you have any issues :)
