Defining The Ship

It seems that although there is at least a cease fire in the whole Bangel vs Spuffy thing, it still seems like 'shipping' is the word.

We've looked at different ships, shipping patterns but I actually wanted to know what defines a ship.

Shipping generally has romantic implications and is to do with the relationship between two fictional characters whether that relationship is established or not.

Now it's no secret that I'm not really much of a shipper but I do like analyzing them and reminiscing over ships past.

Anyway, I wanted to look at the different shipping categories and see if we can define the phenomenon.

Celebrating The Ship

This for me is an established canonical ship that is unlikely to have a future but a relationship that we have enjoyed nonetheless.

It may not have a likely future because of a character death or both characters have clearly moved on to different lovers.

A good popular example would be Tillow

My personal favourite is Wilah.

The Hopeful Ship

This is a relatively conventional ship whereby one believes the couple will end up together. The shipper would have to see a realistic future with the couple and be able to make their case for it.

Normally it consists of a canonical couple who have dated before like Bangel or Spuffy but it can include a realistic possibility for a couple that haven't yet got together like Bander.

My favourite is not a Verse ship but I love Kavid from Six Feet Under.

The Leftfield Ship

Otherwise known as the unconventional ship. This could be an unlikely pairing or an unpopular one.

An example could be Spangel. Despite what happened that one time, both Angel and Spike have been largley depicted as heterosexual and have shown little romantic interest in each other since. I mean it's a possibility but I would argue it was mostly experiementation.

My favourite would be Fuffy. Mainly because it's metaphoric, beautiful and kind of hot. I loved how Faith was depicted as the 'outed' Slayer and Buffy was the Slayer struggling with what's inside. It follows on wonderfully from the end of Season 2 when Joyce finds out Buffy's a Slayer, and has trouble accepting it. "Have you tried not being a Slayer?"

So how do you define the Ships. Do you disagree that Bangel has a realistic future or do you believe Tara and Willow can still end up together? And Spangel, unlikely? Do you think I'm crazy? Questions? Comments?

Nice post. WA posted a similar thread about a 'cease fire', if only temporarily. I think we're all tired of it. The advent of the 'shipping-only forums should help keep the arguments contained and out of the main threads, anyway.

As for your questions, Kana...

So how do you define the Ships. Do you disagree that Bangel has a realistic future or do you believe Tara and Willow can still end up together? And Spangel, unlikely? Do you think I'm crazy? Questions? Comments?

Well, the only 'ships I really pay attention too are Spuffy and Spangel. These are the only ones I remain interested in because there's a lot of history and a lot of possibility there, in my opinion.

I love Spuffy because of about a thousend reasons. I love Spangel because it's HOT. 😉 Spangel is great therotical fun and just begs for fan wanking, fan fiction, and meta. Those two drip sexual tension. It's glorious, really.

How do I define the 'ships? Tillow, Spuffy, Bangel, and Bander seem to be the most popular canon ones. Fuffy and Spangel are the most popular unconventional ones, I think.

Do I believe Bangel has a realistic future together? There's a big question. Yes and no. If Buffy does end up with anyone in the end, I'd be shocked if it wasn't Angel BUT I'm not sure he wants his Slayer defined by the man who stands by her side. I think she'll end up alone in the end. Do I want Spike standing there next to her the way they were? More then anything. That doesn't change, though, that Angel is her true love, not Spike. Just because I prefer Spike with Buffy, that doesn't mean she agrees with me. Doesn't mean Joss agrees with me. And the least thing I want is Joss disrespecting or dismissing Spuffy in favor of Bangel; if that were the case I'd rather Spike didn't show up at all.

Tillow? They're done. Bringing Tara back would be disrespectful to her character, imo. Joss created something truly beautiful with them...I'd hate to see that ruined.

..ugh, I rambled. 😉
